Super Mario 3D Land is the best Mario game since Mario 64.

I'm a bit LTTP, but seriously...

This game is AMAZING! The classic music, stage layouts, secrets, enemies…my god, nostalgia in every turn.

This really feels like the Mario game Nintendo should have been pushing instead of the NSMB series.

I personally feel this game is more of a Mario game than the Galaxy games, that while fun, still relied on gimmicky controls and an atmosphere/music that didn't quite click with me.

If you're on the fence of what free game to get (from the 3DSXL promotion), my vote goes to SM3DL.

Agreed. An absolute masterpiece.

I just got a 3DS XL yesterday and picked up this game for my free bonus game. Quite fun. Only problem is there's no trophies/achievements.

I'm on the final stage and I don't get the love. It's a good game, but hardly amazing to me.

EDIT: This is all relative to the Mario standard, not games in general.

How the heck is it better than the Galaxy series? It's rehashed lower res Galaxy assets and a CRAP soundtrack. The levels might be shorter and faster, but the visuals were too familiar.

It's up there, but it's not better than Galaxy 2. Maybe better than 1.

It's undoubtable proof that Nintendo can still put out one hell of a good 3D Mario game.

I think, technically, the Galaxy games (especially 2) are superior. Bigger worlds; more creative; longer; more creative; etc. But I, personally, prefer 3D more. Just the perfect portable game.

I'm really interested in this from all the praise it's receiving, looks great for a portable version of mario - nice and focused gameplay? More linear but lots of platforming goodness.

I wouldn't say it would replace traditional mario for me, if what I'm thinking is accurate of the game, I like that sense of exploration on the home console versions. Nice to have both though.

Yep, though you won't find many around here who agree. It was like they took everything they learned from every 3D Mario, then went back and restarted the series as if it was just graduating from the 2D titles. A perfect fusion of old Mario and new, polished to a tee. The Mario 64 of a new age.

Yup. I think it's the most brilliantly designed of all of them--even the 3D was amazing and I'm usually 'that guy" who hates anything 3D.

3DLand is amazing, but Galaxy 2 runs rings around it in terms of creativity and level design.

Honestly, Galaxy 2 beats pretty much everything this gen, to me at least.

Great game, but I hope the next game feels a bit "fuller".

This is a very petty criticism because I can't actually find anything wrong with the levels themselves, but it would have been nice if they designed each "World" to actually exist as, well, a geographical location. Each 'World' was just a series of random levels without so much as a theme or motif to stitch them all together.

Next game, it'd be nice if they created a Mario World/NSMBU type world map, which could even help mold more creative level design with multiple paths. I would love to be able to have optional paths and areas to find in a linear, 3D Mario game that changed the course of my play through of the game.

You put it in much better words than I did.

I really like 3D Land. Many of its levels focus on the pure platforming that made the secret levels in Sunshine and many of the stages in Galaxy 1 and 2 great. Unfortunately, there are also a ton of boring levels that don't offer much in the way of platforming challenge or exploration. And even its best levels don't measure up to the craziness in the Galaxy games (or the glory of the Green Stars). But the real reason 3D Land doesn't measure up to recent Mario games is that it's the first Mario in forever where the controls aren't great. I'm not even talking about the circle pad. Mario himself seems somewhat sluggish, and his jump is weighted differently from other games. I don't have as much fun running around in 3D Land as I do in any of the other 3D Marios.

Great game. Not the best since 64.

You're not alone. 3D land felt like a fun distraction, but hardly on the level of the Galaxy games. I think it's the fact that the game is so damned easy until the last third of the game or so.

I honestly enjoyed NSMB2 more.

Both Galaxies trump it in nearly every aspect.

Count me among those confused by the 3D Land adoration. It's good, but I really didn't see anything super special about it. It's a poor man's Super Mario Galaxy.

I don't know how to say this but I'm gonna say it: I think Sunshine is a better game than Mario 64. And Mario 64 is my least favorite 3D Mario game.
