You sign the contract when you buy it? If you don't pay they'll send you to collections and hurt your credit score?

I'll take it!
I bet Sony will do something similar w/ PS4 at E3.
60 a year
60 / 12 = 5
5 dollars a month
edit: my point was, assuming most people are buying live a year at a time. theyre technically paying 10 a month for the subsidy
This.
People who cannot afford it will buy it and make their standing in life that much worse. MS knows Americans...
How do they enforce the 2 year contract? It's not like a phone where they just cut the line and then you cant make calls (becomes useless). Unless there is an online verification you could just refuse to pay after the first month and keep the console offline. Then continue to play games.
After $599 there is no way they can try pulling that off again. They couldn't be the stupid.
Cost of entry is a huge thing imo.
I think it also provides greater flexibility on pricing.
The fact that millions of cell phone consumers still sign up for 2 year contracts just so they can get 200 bucks off their iPhone tells me this will be a great success for Microsoft.
Yes but with phones you get a lot of free texts, minutes, free online usage ect that actually add up to balance the cost out in a way.
Where are people getting $500 for the standalone console?
xbox $720
What's the difference between this and a person who can't afford it but uses his/her credit card to pay in full?
why would you make that assumption when we're talking a model specifically designed for people that want to pay monthly instead of high upfront costs? Similarly, you would describe WoW as $15 a month, not whatever the discounted yearly rate is
Or better if they can actually afford the payments.
But if you can afford the payments, why would you just buy the lead SKU?
It'll be real interesting to see how the first 6 months of this console race goes.
Ugh right,if we follow GAF,that means they decided a 2014 console's price right nowand few hours ago some were arguing about a 2014 launch
just don't bother ;p
Except that's basically the only choice you have for phones. The fact that millions of cell phone consumers still sign up for 2 year contracts just so they can get 200 bucks off their iPhone tells me this will be a great success for Microsoft.
it's too early in the morning for me to understand this post
Also we don't know the outright price, if it REALLY is going to be 499 then yeah.
I find it cute that MS thinks people are willing to sign a contract for something as superfluous as Live.
this and if its like the current 360 one, they also extend the warranty until end of contract. On second thought, paying an extra $40 over the course of 2 years really isn't the worst thing ever to save $200 upfront. Anyone buying an xbox is going to want to play their games online and will have to pay the online tard tax anyway, so it's pointless to pretend it's a $500 console vs a $660 one.
This may be a really good move if true.
what?
my point is, anyone with an xbox probably gets xbox live
most of those people pay 60 for the year (comes out to 5 a month)
so instead, they buy a 299 xbox and are locked into paying 15 a month. that is 10 more a month than they would normally pay
thus, the source of the "mistake" that guy made saying the subsidized xbox is 10 dollars a month
what?

Doesn't this mean the "Always Online" is pretty true then? What would happen if someone lost their job and couldn't pay the for live anymore? I know we talk about used games but what about people who sale their system when they don't need it? People could buy a xbox system on craigslist advertised as a full featured console and get stuck into a two year contract or even worse fucked out of playing a system thats tied to someones delinquent account?
This shit is bringing a lot of grey area questions into gaming and I don't like it.

Because seeing $500 less in your bank account is worse than seeing $300, then $15 next month after your next pay cheque, then the next month, etc, etc.
I'm in the boat saying that the payment option is smart business. Sony should have a similar plan. There really isn't a downside.
People who can afford it will buy your product, and people who can't afford it will have a better opportunity to buy you product.
Except that's basically the only choice you have for phones.

You can't buy phones without contract?
Do you know what is credit card?or are you saying $99+2 years contract 360 is required online?
There are few options. An unlocked phone is substantially more.
I bet that $15 dollars will include more than XBOX live. Think media content (music,TV,movies). People will eat that shit up in the holiday season.
Don't forget to factor in the fact that subs can be bought for $40 or less, thus making the non subsidized console even more cheaper.
Saying that, the one aspect we're not factoring in is that the subsidized console comes with a two year warranty, so maybe it does work out to be better deal...
It would still be cheaper to buy it at $500 and get a $60 annual XBL subscription.
If PS4 is $400 and doesn't require Plus for multiplayer then $660 is anything but competitive, heck even if you factor in 2 years of Plus its still a substantial difference.
