Official Phil Harrison Keynote @ GDC Thread.

"Whatcha talking 'bout Willis?!?!"

The big thing about this keynote? Not Home. Not LBP. Not Singstar. Who knows for sure when we'll see those come to fruition?

The big thing is this: After almost 2 years of nonstop cleaning up after one Sony PR blunder after another, the fans are vindicated. We've got some proof that Sony isn't sitting back in arrogance, counting on the playstation brand to sell their expensive console. People at Sony are getting it, and evidently have been getting it for a long time.

We've got proof that the rest of Sony isn't sucking on the tailpipe while Kutaragi does donuts in his shiny new hotrod console.

I personally hope, that people who continuously came into this topic just to troll HOME feature, without any substantial input, will be banned.

It's the next-gen online interface, way beyond anything we've seen before it.
Reggie doesn't cry, he simply releases poison out of his eyes.

Not to be a Negative Nancy, but is Home actually going to bring in the crowds?

Home is pretty spectacular in terms of scale, but I don't think it'll be a selling point (unless it came with a price drop).

Cause that's the most important thing, right? Seriously.

I am guessing it involves an axe and Phil Harrison's head.

Nah, I bet it is some sort of mantra which includes $599. Nintendo doesn't have anything to worry about as long as they're the only console sitting in the pricing sweet spot.

It's not about it being a selling point by itself, it's about making the Playstation experience as complete and appealing as possible. I realize that sounds an awful lot like PR, but that's the nature of this.

It is part of a larger whole.
In the past week or so alone we saw some great Heavenly Sword footage (on an NBC Universal show no less and not just a blurry background shot), we have heard great things about Warhawk, heard great things coming in firmware updates like dvd upscaling and other things, heard discussion of new creation tools for devs working for the PS3, more Lair stuff, we heard that there will be more on Final Fantasy XIII and VSXIII at the upcoming square event, blu ray is taking off in a huge way, more games and more information is coming.

There will have to reach a point when people will stop focusing on the price and other things from the past and say...wtf I am getting a hell of a lot and it will only get better.
The fud and crap is already wearing thin and starting to come off as personal agenda instead of actual issues.

Yeah, selling systems is pretty important. Online functionality is a selling point--convoluted online functionality is a turnoff. I'll approach Home with caution...

Don't approach it at all if you don't like. It doesn't matter. You don't have to participant in this.

I am at working burning some company time (and bandwidth) ... I just signed on and checked out the whole Home thing .... dam it's hot! I think Sony has thrown down the gauntlet and MS will have to come up with something. Don't get me wrong, I have supported the XBOX/Live/360 since day 1, but what Sony has come up with is very cool. I like a lot, but it won't make be run out and pick up a PS3.

I really like what Sony has shown with Home. I am not a fan of the PS3 (but a huge PSP fan), I have to ask - is this something that can/might be brought over to the PSP? Is/Has there been anything news wise with the PSP?

it's a free service, how much caution do you need to approach it with? if you like it use it, if not don't.

Does anyone know where I can watch the Sony GDC Press Conference?

I tried the Gamespot link posted earlier but that appears to have ended with just a box saying 'Watch out for the rerun!' in it's place.

I tried Gamevideos but they don't appear to have the full thing. JUst some individual videos, which is still good but I really want the whole thing.

I'm not sure where else I could try. Would keeping an eye on BitTorrent perhaps throw up some results?

I just watched Little Big Planet level creator video. Looks really good. I just wonder how they manage to control their "paint brushes" so well, as I assume it's controlled by the analogue sticks and I've always felt that drawing with those is very inaccurate.

You know Sony is really righting some wrongs when the general consensus on KOTAKU is overwhelmingly positive.

If UK Resistance start singing their praises, that's when you've got to worry.

Don't get me wrong, I like the concept (as long as there are ways to circumvent it for quick game; probably already built in). I just don't think that it will have the effect Sony is going after.

where can I watch the entire Phil Harrison Keynote? the Gamespot link doesn't let me play anything.

edit: I see others asking the same thing... nevermind...

*waits for working link to appear*

It's a completely separate icon the XMB, dude. If you don't want to use it, don't even touch it. Go right into the game and load up the server browser, it doesn't matter. Home is just a way to get social and creative, it's not a requirement

Seriously there's no room for complaints here. It doesn't cost money and you won't be forced to use it, end of story

OMG it's huge, the possibilities are infinity!!!:D
The impossible is unknown at PS3 home.

But seriously, Second Life did the virtual space stuff with a lot more customization and user generated content options years ago. The real megaton is LBP.

Looking at the 'big lobby' screenshots (with tons of people in it), I was secretly hoping Sony would ape on Microsoft by pulling off an in-game pretend-shootout scene.

EDIT: Looking at the Little Big Planet "sharing" trailer, how the hell has Sony advanced Microsoft on the "Velocity Girl" marketplace/community aspect? It's unreal.

bolded for truth.

i can't wait for lbp. great visuals... potential for endless fun... awesome toy/sandbox/game thing.

I will be holding the first annual Cosplay Girl Slave Auction at my Home home on November First.
Drinks and refreshments will be served.

I kid I kid

Or do I...

It might not have been mentionned in the keynote but was there any details concerning when we'll see firmware 1.6 and PS2 BC at 720p?

they did? when did that happen? When was Second life an entertainment center where you can talk and meet your gaming buddies, watch movies, play games, etc, etc.

Did I miss something?

Home seems like Second Life in 2020. A lot more stuff going on than just living Second Life.

How much better can it get than clan meeting, discussing strategies and then all playing the game together? Tie it into MMO's coming from Sony itself, and it will be huge.

It is pretty ridicilous to what extent people go to downplay Home. As if user interaction is something weird and not fun anymore... wtf are we all doing in here? Are we playing games? :-).

Short of me reading all 26 pages, can anyone please tell me whether they've talked about putting in in-game PSN friends list messaging (messaging people who aren't playing the same game as you when you're in a game)?

I'm sorry but I was at work all day, this is just too big a thread to go through. Thanks.

Didn't address the topic at all.

I'm thinking that would just be in the March Firmware upgrade not Home related.

<3 this

And sounds like developers can make games(should they want to) that lets you use your Home avatar as the main character?

This is a GAME DEVELOPERS conference. They're not pitching this to the masses, we're just tuning in. This is targeted towards devs to get their feedback and let them know what the future of the platform entails. PEACE.
