Gali was using her laptop in the hotel’s staff bar when her drink was spiked. She awoke to a nightmare beyond belief: she had been savagely raped by three of her colleagues. Alone and frightened, she took herself to hospital. What Alicia didn’t know is that under the UAE’s strict sharia laws, if the perpetrator does not confess, a rape cannot be convicted without four adult Muslim male witnesses. She was charged with having illicit sex outside marriage, and thrown in a filthy jail cell for eight months.

From what I understand this happened over a year ago but this is the first time she's talked about it to the media? It's the first I've heard of it.

Gotta love that sharia law. Remember, Islam isn't misogynistic.

I always found it interesting and unfortunate what a dichotomy the Dubai is. One the one hand you have this amazingly advanced and modern architecture, and on the other hand (assuming it hasn't been chopped off), you have such an outdated and barbaric system of laws.

Such a shame, she made the mistake of being a woman in a Muslim country.

I never got this.

Who are these 4 adult Muslim men just standing around witnessing the rape and doing nothing about it? Other rapists? Easily the most dysfunctional major religion, and that's saying a hell of a lot.

I wonder how long her 'colleagues' were planning to rape her?

The fact that it was three of them is just disturbing. It says they were deported. I wonder when they were originally from?

Sounds like it was a business trip.

I guess, but on the other hand, how many people are going on a trip and go "wellp, better read up on their rape laws!"

I would hope any woman entering a country with a predominantly muslim population. Sadly.

Why did the US invade Afghanistan and not this country? Oh wait...

Nazism was born in the country which had the best musicians, scientists, engineers and philosophers.

This is a case where the military should intervene and break that person out of jail. This should be considered kidnapping.

Fuck anyone that works in this country's judicial system.

Watch the documentary called "The Invisible War" on Netflix to get outraged at the US Military's treatment of rape victims, both women and men. There are women who are charged with adultery after their superiors raped them, the kicker is the women were not married but the rapist was. No charges were filed against the rapist as well.

What? Are you seriously advocating that Australia invade the UAE?

That would literally start World War 3. There's far too much money and resource investment in the area for anyone to allow that to happen. Not to mention the logistics of getting Australia's army over there and not being able to use their allies' bases.

Also, it's not kidnapping if you break a country's laws and get arrested, regardless of how insane and backwards the laws are.

How long does it take to research a country's laws before a trip nowadays?

Maybe she doesn't have internet or an home town library. People have trouble reseaching video games before buying so it wouldn't surprise me that people wouldn't research anything else.

It makes me angry enough knowing I can do nothing to change any of this. Watching that would make me have a heart attack.

They could have sent a small team to bust her out.

Bullshit, by saying that you are saying their laws are valid and to be respected, when they're not.

As horrible as her ordeal was, I'm glad she's talking about it with the public. With a country like UAE, you have to hit them where it hurts - tourism.

I would really like it if someone from Muslim-GAF could explain what kind of horrible interpretation of sharia law leads to a conviction like this. Is it really that cut and dry, or might there be room for modern, secular ethics to work their way in?

I said no such thing.

Are you saying that it's right for another country to invade another if they disagree with their laws? Because if you say yes, then you're okay with, say, a conservative Islamic theocracy taking over the US because they could view our laws as invalid and not respectable.

So according to Saudi Islamic law, you can only prove you have been raped, if you have been gang raped, while others who did not rape you were standing by.

Are you saying that it's right for another country to invade another if they disagree with their laws?

When it's something like Sharia law and they kidnap citizens of other countries for violating those "laws", then yes, yes I am. There is absolutely no reason not to bust those people out of their prison by force if necessary.

Agreed, if they refuse to bring their laws into the 21st century then the best option is to just warn people from going there. There really should be a travel advisory for that region.

former employer reacting:
Starwood Hotels & Resorts said:
What happened in June 2008 to Alicia Gali, a former employee of Le Méridien Al Aqah hotel, was deplorable. While the hotel worked diligently on Ms. Gali’s behalf, the authorities investigated and prosecuted Ms. Gali under the local laws. Additionally, the men involved were also prosecuted and each served prison terms before being deported. As for Ms. Gali’s lawsuit against the hotel, we disagree with the allegations.

The hotel management provided support and assistance to Ms. Gali and her family throughout that time,
including assisting with medical support and the investigation, liaising with her representative Australian embassy and coordinating and arranging affairs with her family in Australia.

Starwood’s repeated approaches to discuss Ms. Gali's claim with her attorneys have been ignored and declined. As this matter is part of an open on-going Starwood investigation and litigation commenced by Ms. Gali against Starwood and the Commonwealth of Australia, we cannot comment further at this time.

The safety and security of our associates and guests continues to be a paramount priority.

This is unbelievable. The world is so weird with laws like this still existing, it's honestly a bit disheartening. Humanity is such a mixed bag.

Well that seems like a fairly reasonable threshold...

Really? How does one even establish something as ridiculous as this? So if 3 makes witness a rape it doesn't count? How about if there are 4 men but the last isn't Muslim? Are Muslim's alone able to determine what constitutes rape? Geez
