"Indie Games [May] Now Voting - Post 573!"

So I've given Pulse Shift a go after it popped up on the Indie Game Stand and I can recommend it if you like the first person puzzler. It is this gravity shifting platformer type thing that reminded me of Kula World spliced with a bit of Mirror's Edge. It isn't without some flaws, controls can be a little floaty (although the rewind feature does help relieve the problems caused by this) and given how often you rotate gravity it can feel a little unstable, sometimes you kinda sink into the ground just after a rotation as if the game has forgotten how tall your camera should be, but I've never fallen through the floor or anything. But despite these I am still finding the game fairly cool and an interesting take on the 'navigable this area' sub genre of puzzle games.

Oh, it looks incredibly cool too (post a screenshot). Thanks, going to buy it.

Done, it sounds great from this description.

Haven't you thought of ditching the fights at all? There're so many ways to create a tension, especially in horror games, and fights usually distract the player from the experience, putting him in a constant survival/shell mode, impenetrable by other thoughts, but I understand there're difficulties involved with a lack of direction, caused by randomly generated world.

But like I said it sounds intriguing and I'll keep an eye on the project.
Thanks.

Originally there was no combat altogether, but I've added in some defensive aspects lately. I don't want the player to be constantly running or panicking. That kind of gameplay also makes enemies feel very homogenous. You're being chased by the same thing in a different skin. Some combat also allows for a more traditional type of bossfight.

Most of all though, I didn't want to just make another Amnesia-like horror game. I'm just as much inspired by that, as by traditional Japanese survival-horror games like Haunting Ground and Clock Tower.

Good luck! I love cel-shaded games, and I'm into randomly generated games lately, so this is a must see for me. Also, to counterweight Hofmann's opinion, don't take out the fights; I for one appreciate gameplay as much, if not more, than storytelling. :D After all, good gameplay makes a game much more replayable, which for a game that is randomly generated I would guess is kind of the point.
Mhmm. There's too much atmospheric walking sims out there. The horror genre is revived on PC, but it's lacking in core gameplay variety.

Maybe I can help you out with the sound effects, if it's not too much work. :)
It'll be basic stuff like footsteps, monster growls, creepy wind noises, etc. Thanks for the offer, and I may contact you in the future.

Is there a playable v0.00001 alpha version somewhere? I'd love to see how you went about that idea.

there is, but it's in spanish. the game was a bit of commentary on the role of the argie media during the falkland war, so we made a short demo in like a two weeks in spanish and then spent like half a year taking out all the hardcoding and changing up some stuff.

we had a lot of problems in taking the base gameplay and making it last like an hour since anything that we added was so much extra complexity.

I heard so many great things about it, but never had a chance to play it before. It really deserves all the praise it gets. Love how rearranging those words changes the world and how the actions put a new meaning to the text, interacting in both ways.
I like it that he just said "let's make a short story". the concept could be ostensibly extended by why?

Thanks.

Indie Statik wrote about your game!

Ah, unfortunate. Considering you cant just translate that kind of game, I wont get to try it. Pity!

Yeah, it's perfect the way it is.

I wonder what do you think of 18 Cadence.
haven't played it, will see about making some time for it

Ah, unfortunate. Considering you cant just translate that kind of game, I wont get to try it. Pity!

yeah translating the game required redoing every "stage". we were planning on maybe doing a shorter english version, with just a few stages. I'll go back to that game, we were all pretty pleased with the concept and some of the execution was really good, we just had to find the right scope and learn how to do it best.

scope's a bitch :P

Alright, lets open the floodgates and hope some others want to join in. We'll stay in this thread for now since the database is only focussed on these games anyway. Eventually, I might change this over to its own dedicated thread though after a bit more testing. I am not a professional programmer, so expect bugs and the occasional weirdness. Also, if you havent been contacted by me personally about it, please read this post carefully:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is it?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Currently, a database for Indie Games in this thread in which you can rate and write impressions. These ratings and impressions are then calculated to an overall average and can be checked by other users of the program. The database is technically not limited to them however, and we will eventually add more games past the ones in this thread, starting with other Indies and possibly also consoles and PC releases. This will depend on how well the program can deal with bigger numbers of contributors. If that doesnt work out, we'll still be able to use it as GAF Indie game and impressions Database.

This means that the data you put in can be accessed by other program users. However, you can use the program and use all the functions without posting your own scores as well if you have any privacy concerns about not wanting to post your own scores (but then they wont be included in the rating either).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How to Install
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Parts of the installer may be in German because I have no clue how to change it. Sorry about that.
 • Download and install Microsoft Visual Basic Power Packs: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=145727&clcid=0x804
 • Download and run the setup exe in this rar file: http://goo.gl/jZ9fk, which installs the latest .net framework. You can skip that if you already have the latest .net framework installed. If you get any German buttons/instructions, click "Ich stimme zu" (I agree)
 • Once the previous download updated your .net framework and it finished, you can close everything and download this file: http://goo.gl/MPKSf, create a folder for it(on C:, your desktop or wherever you want) and put the .exe file in that folder. This folder will then be filled up with the program files.
 • Any future update, will only require you to download the newest .exe file from a dl link I provide and replace the old one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First time starting it up
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 • Click Database - Redownload UserGameDatabase to download the most recent GameDatabase (containing the information about the games you see in the program) and the most recent ForumReadout (which is downloaded from ME and contains the most recent readout for any GAF impressions posted with the program tags in this thread)
 • Click Mode - Player Ratings to start the actual program with the new databases. Every time you start up the program, you'll choose this mode to start the actual database.
 • Click Database - Download Pictures for Player Ratings to download pictures for the database entries. If you have a GameDataBase update, you'll need to run this again to download pictures for new entries. It will only download pictures for games you dont have pictures yet. First time doing this will take a while and seemingly "lock up" the program. Be patient and wait until it finished (see the genre box for an approximate progress).
 • Program is good to go! (If you still miss some data, restart the program)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How to use the program
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1. Main Window: Database window
This shows all the games available in the database currently. The number shows how many games are currently visible with the selected filters. Click on an entry to select it and enter some letters in the box above if you are searching for a specific game. The "Sort by Indie thread" option allows you to filter for games of a specific month, in case you only want an overview for the games of the current month to vote on (and later to allow for month specific game rankings).

2. Main Window: General Filter Options

This, currently, allows you to filter for PC, Mac and Linux games (Consoles currently not supported in that mode) and genres. "Filter inactive" shows all games rated 0-5 and unrated games. "Filter active" shows all games that are rated between X and Y, where X and Y are the numbers you entered in the small boxes. And the last mode "Unrated Games" only shows games that no one has yet rated on, if you feel like checking out some games not many people have yet noticed.

3. Main Window: Specific Rating Filter
This has 3 modes, which you can switch through by clicking the button.

4. Main Window: Lower Information window
The upper textboxes are purely informational and cant be edited. If you find a mistake here, let me know in the thread. The lower textbox contains "Niy." (No impression yet) as long as you havent written any impressions for a game. If you decide to write something, make sure to hit "SAVE" and it will show up for others in the next forumreadout version if you updated your forum post accordingly.

5. Main Window: Top Information window
This shows a picture of the game (if you downloaded them via Database - Download Pictures), your own rating if you rated the game and the average ranking of everyone else rating the game. Your ratings will only be included in the average if you posted them on GAF with the upper right button. The +, - and X buttons allow you to raise,lower or delete the score you gave to a game, which saves automatically. The ratings/impressions button shows how many people rated a game or gave impressions for it. Clicking that button, opens the analysis window.

6. Analysis Window: Ratings
This shows how many people using the database did not rate the game you are currently at and the amount of 0-5 votes. The bar fills to 100% for the highest rating number and then accordingly changes for the other rating categories.

7. Analysis Window: Impressions
This, currently, shows random impressions from users who wrote something about the game. I might add some more options here later, like options to only show positive/negative comments etc.

8. Analysis Window: Analysis lists
The left list is the complete list of people who rated the current game and shows the rating they gave. If you click on a name in that list, you can see the impression he wrote for that game in the box below. If that user didnt write anything yet, it will show "Niy." (No impressions yet."). The right box is the recommendations list for that game, going by what users liked who liked the current active game. If you like the current active game, and you havent tried some of those recommended games, give them a whirl! We need more guys posting their ratings, so that we can balance this recommendation list.

9. Main Window: Post Content on GAF
The left link is a link to my free music blog, feel free to grab and listen to some music while you play and rate games :p The right button gives you a box with your ratings that you need to post on GAF in THIS thread (without changing anything) for it to appear in the next version of the ForumReadout. Additionally, you can use the button to your Gaf post (so you dont need to bookmark it) if you entered that information in the settings (see arrows on the right picture) Please remember to replace the content of your initial post and DO NOT post more than once with your impressions. Simply replace the same post when you updated your impressions. Bookmark that post, so you can easily update it! At startup the program will inform you if there is a new version of that file available.

And again, the dl for the current version (READ THE STUFF UP THERE IF ITS YOUR FIRST TIME DOWNLOADING IT):
http://goo.gl/MPKSf Feel free to report any problems or suggestions here.

Thanks for what you've done. Hope it will work out!

Give it a go guys.

Yeah, lets see if people actually want to try it or whether I tried to find a solution to a problem no one cared about ;p

I do have some more interesting stuff planned for it though before I am satisfied with what I put out here. Still nice that its currently already usable though :)

So Rogue Legacy is doing pre-orders now. $10 gets you a copy of the soundtrack, and the game later (devs are rather vague about when exactly they plan on releasing, apparently they are working on updates + trying to get Greenlit ASAP.)

The gameplay shown so far strikes me as very inspired by Symphony of the Night, which is definitely up my alley. They've been giving "press demo copies" to streamers and some of them have put footage up on Youtube, here's one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYqPdVVbmKE&feature=youtu.be&a

I plonked down my $10. A little annoyed at the very vague release plans, but it looks worth the wait. Kind of wish SteamGAF's Twitch channel had enough pull to get press copies, but I have my doubts. ;p

I just noticed that the video of this game looks criminally good on my Vita.
:(

Will buy tomorrow as well.

Looks fairly promising. Something about the graphics are kinda unappealing to me, but watching the general gameplay video won me over. Although I can't bring myself to preorder with so little information. Once they drop an estimated release date and/or perhaps a demo or beta I think I will likely throw them some cash.

Just got 7 Grand Steps and was blown away. So much fun!

Yeah, crazy addictive little game. Definitely a positive surprise for me as well.

On another note, we had 2 people downloading the program so far, if no one of those post their impressions, we might switch it over to a new thread rather soonish to get some more testers.

When is Gorogoa supposed to come out again? I really loved it when I played it some time ago.

I think the last mention was "sometime this year".

A friend and I are working on an RPG in RPGmaker together. It's called:

Dragon's Den II: The Terranic Empire

It's a sequel to a game he made a while back. He wasn't comfortable writing dialogue, so he ended up turning the first game into a dungeon crawler. It's our love letter to the Dragon Quest series. We came up with the story together, first making an outline. After that, I spent about half a year working on the script, which I have broken into three parts: Main story events, side quests and NPC banter. The main story script is 100% complete, the side quest script is 75% complete. I'm holding off writing the NPCs until we have the maps finished. We have divided the maps between the two of us and are currently 20% complete, which isn't bad because we didn't start mapping until recently. We plan on having about 14 towns, and about 20 or so dungeons.

We currently have all of our monsters "programmed" and ready to go. Items and magic are in the database as well.

Here are some screenshots, if anyone is interested.

Without placing a jinx on ourselves, we're hoping to finish by the end of the year

My brother and I are working on an RPG Maker game as well. We're using VX Ace, but we've been working with various versions of the tool set for years (even going as far back as the original on PSone, lol!). Last year we finally pinned down our concept/world and we're comfortable with it. I can not even tell you how many revisions we went through to arrive at what we have now though. We were actually creating two separate games at the time. My game was going to be a bit larger in scope than my brother's title, but we ended up focusing on my bro's idea because we realized how much of an investment it is to seriously make a game. I'm mainly the map/dungeon/event designer for our game and I cannot even tell you how many times I've re-done and scrapped maps/ideas. My brother is the database guy, he's coming up with all the formulas, growth rates, skills, spells, equipment, and most importantly, the balance.

Our game too is a love letter to our favorite RPGs. If I had to describe our game, it would be a cross between Vagrant Story/King's Field/SMT, with a splash of Alundra, Wild ARMs, and Zelda. Our battle system was greatly influenced by Shadow Hearts as well. Actually, more so than the game's themselves, the composers and their music contributions inspired us the most. Hitoshi Sakimoto & Shoji Meguro's works made a lot of what we're doing come to life.

Good luck with your game. It sounds quite ambitious! I know how much work goes into this so I hope all goes well during your final months of production. =D

Yeah, I remember you could have one. Why did they change it?

This one would be my first game related choice:

Created by Vectorpark (Windosill, Feed The Head) for Malika Favre's Kama Sutra.

If I break some rules, I'll take it down, but I think all those lolis images are more offensive than this.

I'd remove it, if only to keep this thread SFW.

Just started Fez here. While I hate collect-athons, the puzzle mechanics are really compelling.

The whole world, love for detail and overall feel is just amazing and makes me feel all fuzzy when playing it. I actually stopped playing so that I can play it on Vita for the first time eventually.

18 cadence is pretty curious stuff

crazy amount of writing, very interesting

Wrote some impressions in previous thread, so let me just say I love it. I was wondering which game I could give 5/5 for Toma's Database and this was the first thing that came to my mind. Absolutely brilliant stuff.

The Novelist - I've never heard of it before, but it sounds intriguing.

Steam Greenlight

The Novelist asks one central question: can you achieve your dreams without pushing away the people you love? The game focuses on Dan Kaplan, a novelist struggling to write the most important book of his career while trying to be the best husband and father he can be. The Kaplans have come to a remote coastal home for the summer, unaware that they're sharing the house with a mysterious ghostly presence: you.

Read the family's thoughts. Explore their memories. Uncover their desires and intervene in their lives. Remain unseen to avoid causing personal trauma. It's up to you to decide how Dan's career and family life will evolve, but choose carefully; there are no easy answers, and every choice has a cost.

Dan's relationships - to his work, his wife, and his son - react and shift in response to your choices. With a different sequence of events in every playthrough, The Novelist gives life to a unique experience each time you play.

The decisions you make will define the Kaplans' lives, but they may also tell you something about yourself.

Or just watch the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_m7rmb3QrN8

I have a thing against "unsystemized" games, that makes me not get too much into them (games like the path or dear esther), so I wouldn't give it a 5/5 but I'm planning on playing it again, see what I can make.

about the app, toma, I kinda wish you'd coded it for web, seems perfect for my new phone, we could've pool in to pay for the hosting, etc. :P

I'd give you a hand but my html5/js/jquery is pretty poor as well as all my database knowledge

Hey, you 7 people who have downloaded the program. Please post your impressions post if you rate some games. I need some more data to balance the recommendations list.

Yeah, I knew that people would ask for other platforms, but I guess thats what you got to live with if you have a hobby programmer doing the job :p

TowerFall

This one looks neat. It's a death match arena game, where you shoot and dodge arrows. The arrow collision physics are a nice touch.

The arrow physics are really neat. Looks super hectic and reminds me a bit of smash brothers actually :p

Spellshifter (iOS devices (currently) + pc/Android (upcoming))

A new, upcoming puzzle-adventure game that just has been put up on Indiegogo

I know the developers personally, and that is why I am quite interested in seeing whether they succeed with the project - there are some very neat things about this project. One is that it wont be battle-focused from what I understand, but rather puzzle-oriented (and we will be able to choose between different abilities to solve the same puzzles/undo locks and stuff), the other is that I have seen the wind engine in person, and it is absolutely great to see something like that being implemented in a platformer like this :P (But I might be biased towards wind, as that freaked me out with New Super Mario Bros Wii as well, wont ever forget that one specific wind-based sand level...)

Here is their Indiegogo page

And here are a few screens:

I love that game!

I know the guy that made this game, he's awesome :P

like literally an "interactive poem" (I think he calls him something like that) not really.

his other famous game is I wish I were the moon: http://www.kongregate.com/games/danielben/i-wish-i-were-the-moon

and he's working on a game called storyteller which absolutely blows my mind (goofy argie accent aside)

Oh cool, didn't know he made more games. Thanks!

I couldn't really get into it on my first go. I felt like I was just adding random words to the story. I'll have to give it another shot.

EDIT:
I'm starting to put some impressions in the tool. What's the next step after that, posting them to the thread?

Even in my understanding it's not a game, more of an experimental novel, so I see someone could not get into it.

EDIT:
I'm starting to put some impressions in the tool. What's the next step after that, posting them to the thread?

Yes, copy them in it the same way as they are in the program and that's it.

Just post the readout you get with the button in a single post and bookmark that post. If you update your impressions replace the contents of the same post :) The rest will be done by me and your version of the program will automatically find new database updates I uploaded.

Edit: Thanks Hofmann ;)

That preview of Rogue Legacy made me go back and check out Risk of Rain and I rather liked it. Has a fairly nice responsive feel for the controls and the odd 'slightly MMO-y' cool down abilities style of moveset is something I haven't really seen before in a sidescroller.

Yup, definitely on my radar as well. Speaking of games on my radar:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=555442

I dont like MMO's but I am definitely interested in Hex. Only way to get a Pokemon TCG/Shandalar like RPG world with a card battle system these days I guess.

I'd love to help, but I'm just have no patience for javascript :P

I'm not a programmer first or anything, but all the little things about it annoy the fuck out of my coder side.

Oh cool, didn't know he made more games. Thanks!
:)

we love the dude here in argieland, him finally making a commercial (thou still indie and weird) game and selling it on steam will be a huge inspiration for our indie scene.
