Sony Japan has a strange countdown site with a streaming look at a room with a bunch of monitors on it. In the URL, the user name is panopticon, which is a type of circular prison in which a watchman can observe all of the inmates housed. The design makes it so the inmates don’t know whether they are being watched or not. Whether that has anything to do with the countdown is beyond me.Any ideas? At any rate, it looks to be set for a reveal on Thursday, May 16.

I hope Sony realises FF is not strong anymore in the West so if they really want to go after America they need to secure exclusives accordingly. I am sure MS is going to come guns blazing and probably have some sort of exclusive deal with GTAV and COD which will go a long way like these franchises did for the 360.

FF is still popular. People will jump on a new entry that looks appealing and isn't a MMO or Final Fantasy XIII related at this point.

Are there even any rumors about MS securing either of those? crazy buttocks confirmed that EA had an exclusive for the next Xbox (which turned out to be Titan) but said that Activision didn't.

I think the damage is done and FF will not generate the same buzz for American audiences. The franchise makes me groan and is way past its prime. Sony needs to make exclusive deals with the likes of Valve and Rockstar, going after Japanese developers for Western market would be really stupid.

Sony has already shown remarkable forward thinking at their PS4 unveil and they need to show the same at E3. Acting like its 2000 when Japanese developers were relevant was the same reason PS3 lost so much Market share in America.

Heard it through the grapevine. It's just something MS would do, they are great at getting 3rd party exclusivity of any kind and will definitely zero in on the big names that matter to American audiences.

First to the bolded... that's not why they lost market share at all. There are many other reasons the first being $599.

And FF isn't done if done right. There's a reason why the PS1 FFs still sell well and I think if they make one as appealing as those titles then of course FF can do well again. It just doesn't help perceptions that FFXIII was met with mixed reception and then spawned two unnecessary sequels.

With all due respect, I think you might be engaging in wishful thinking here. The Western market has changed a lot in the past 13 years, and particularly over the course of this generation, the definition of what's "appealing" here has narrowed in a way that seems less than favorable to the future of the franchise outside Japan.

Next mainline FF won't bomb or anything, but I'd be surprised if it sells more than 4M (edit: looking more closely at sales of previous titles in the franchise, make that 3.5M) outside Japan.

Given that nearly 2m of the sales of FFXIII were from Japan, that wouldn't be a bad thing.

Sony/SE showing off a mature, dark and action oriented Final Fantasy will not only be a breath of fresh air to the franchise but I really believe with a proper marketing push a Final Fantasy such as that will appeal to western audiences (not just the ones that buy any FF).

SE has always had (arguably) the best graphics, they just need to get the story and gameplay down, in ways that will please both Japan and the West. I think a mature, action-based game could do that. But of course they'd actually have to complete a game in a timely fashion and keep it within budget.

I'm way more worried about how Kingdom Hearts is received once its back on consoles than Final Fantasy at this point. KH actually had an excellent game and an ok game released but it has been absent from home consoles for so long that who knows how much of the western home console heavy fanbase just has moved on. Such a sad fate if KH3 bombs just because the idiots at SE wanted to take the series for a ride.

To be fair I think KH is one of those titles that can become big again through rebooting if need be but the FF aspect would probably be toned down.

You realize how much that would cost? If MS wants to outright buy every major western third party IP let them.

Getting Versus XIII and KH3 exclusives probably isn't hard for Sony and would strengthen their brand, as those two franchises used to be symbolic of playstation.

Yeah, if Versus is marketed with a big push, due to it being action based, having darker themes, possible game within the PS4's launch year and if the game turns out to be really good I can see it doing 6-8 million LTD.

Easily, Final Fantasy fans have been waiting for the next FF7 for years, Versus seemed like the closest SE has come to achieving that. IF they make this game plays like what the trailers depicts It could be their next big hit.

Getting exclusivity over bigger games like GTA and CoD would likely cost a lot more than it'd be worth. It's not like many people are going to be buying either of those on next-gen consoles if they're available.

The most on those you'll see is timed exclusive DLC.

People will go absolutely bat shit insane if they show new footage of Versus and IF it looks great as it did in the past...People will be like FF13 what? They will forget about it real fast..mark my word. FF is still a big and very important franchise

Agreed, people around here really undersell Final Fantasy. A new and exclusive Final Fantasy game available in the launch window or shortly after is going to move systems, especially if that game looks as good as Agni's Philosophy.

I'm interested in this angle. I feel like the COD gamers are going to be like the Madden gamers who stick with last gen consoles years after their expiration date. I guess we'll find out.

and it will end with "coming soon"

Let's hope they fixed the combat.

It will be shown and and will be a Launch title for PS4.

It has been absent for a very long time, true. In that time period, various other IP have come, and the gaming landscape has changed significantly too. However, if planned properly, Kingdom Hearts could be quite a big title. It just needs the proper attention, and a calculated marketing/release schedule. There are ways to get a title more attention in the midst of various other game releases.

FFXIII shipped over 4.5M outside Japan, AFAIK, so 3.5M would be a drop of over 20 percent in Western sales. Not an apocalyptic scenario, but not good.
FFXIII had a pretty crappy sell-through in the West from data available. I don't think there's any doubt that a year one FF title on the next generation would outperform it. The brand name is still perfectly fine, but it'll also have the added bonus of being a pretty big established IP in the midst of, more than likely, new IP trying to gain a foothold.

I sincerely doubt KHIII will bomb in the West. It's not strictly Japanese stuff like FF is. It's a big Disney crossover franchise, plus tons of cameos from FF's glory days. People have obviously gotten sick of the stupid way the series has been stuck on handhelds. But a big and shiny game with the right movies/IPs would do the trick.

I was going to make a GAF-Design type thread in which fellow GAFers posted their own diesngs/wishful thinking/concept for PS4/Xbox. So far the only other GAF member I've seen post anything was Cory's XBox brnading (which I personally thought was pretty good). I doubt either of us warrant a new thread (I think his stuff does IMO), so I'll just post this here I had posted some of my concept before, I spent a few hours today expanding the idea. I was working on how the actual packaging would work/look because I'm a sucker for good packaging but I didn't have time today.

(My preference)

To make a long explanation short, I got the idea of angles from Sony's current products, particularly the often posted BR player. I felt that a console that's angle would be a pain to rest controllers and other objects on. So instead of an actual angled device, the angles would be part of the overall Playstation 4 branding. Angles are found in many things, think of hubs and networking if you look at a diagram of say a star topography you get angles everywhere. I feel that overall I think Sony's branding of Playstation is weaker than MS' Xbox branding, at least in the sense of actual design, not to say mine is really any better.

As for the game casing, it's actually suppose to be a opaque white along the lines of Wii casing instead of the clear case we have now. You can see where laziness got the best of me.

Understandable, I'm not sure how I feel about it either, though I do product design for a living. I think I've let PS2 affect my design too much, that or I've looked at it way too long and no longer like it. Probably a mix of both D:

Really like the white banner for the box arts, hope SONY choose to do it like that.

What are the chances we will see a new getaway? that game in the UK I feel would do VERY well.
