I'm looking into getting the Legacy of Kain games, is it worth getting Blood Omen 2? It seems to be the black sheep of the franchise.

Also why don't gog have Blood Omen 1? Does that game hold up well today?
 
maybe they have problems getting blood omen 1 to run. it's a 90s windows game. they should just put up the playstation iso or something.

another game I've been thinking about wanting on gog is ALBION. must be ubisoft own this through bluebyte, bu but.. why isn't it on there.

there was big legal mess between SK and some other publisher over the IP/assets, that's why you can't find BO1 anywhere.
 
I remember playing it 15 years ago on PS1 (along with Nightmare Creatures), but I remember it darker and grittier. Those GOG screenshots are almost too colourful.

We had more colorful games on average back then I guess. So long as they weren't Quake, we joke about modern games being brown & brown but I think that literally was all brown & brown with some red blood I guess.

And... yeah, I thought the game looked/sounded fun in magazines, and when i rented it it was garbage. In hindsight I was probably hoping for something akin to Demon's Souls/Dark Souls then.
 
I dunno, Quake had a lot of purple (the sky in non-base stages) and blue (Wizard-themed stages, like E2M5: The Wizard's Manse), too.

Granted, it was never particularly saturated color, unlike Doom, but it was color!

Scratches is a superb atmospheric point and click with a few minor issues that don't ruin the overall experience, highly recommended. Just remember these wise words of advice: When in doubt, call Jerry.

Miasmata on the other hand is a tougher recommendation to make but I feel that more people should take a look at it. It's the most detailed survival simulator we've had in years with a lot of attention to player interaction with the world and dealing with his own necessities. The problem is that since the game was only made by two guys, sometimes it just doesn't all come together as well as you'd hope. There's body weight awareness when scaling terrain for example - but sometimes instead of acting realistically you slip like a bar of soap straight down a hill and take massive amounts of damage. Your character also needs water to survive, but does not have to eat and there's no way to hunt for food. The game is also ugly as hell, but there are some places where the game obviously had a lot of time put into making it look as beautiful as possible and it truly comes across as a living and breathing 3D representation of some of those pre-rendered adventure worlds from years past.

Scratches is the one I'd say you should go for if you can only afford one, but I feel that both are really worth the money.
 
The thing that hurts Miasmata the most is that the creature goes from scary, to comical, to nuisance very quickly. I forgave everything else, even the constant tumbling.
 
Scratches is a whole-hearted recommendation. One of the best adventure horrors ever made. Great story that builds and builds. The designer, Agustin Cordes, is a huge Lovecraft fan and the game is quite Lovecraftian.
 
Scratches is great.

+ Incredible atmosphere
+ Excellent sound design and music
+ Captivating story (main story and sub-stories)
+ In-game journals (letters, newspapers, diaries, etc.) are very well written
+ Intuitive inventory and controls
+ Short and sweet
+ Some fucking terrifying moments

- Puzzles at first were okay and nicely spread out, but soon became overwhelming and too challenging (in a, "How the fuck was I supposed to figure that out?" way)
- Protagonist is annoying and unlikable
- Ending felt rushed
- Dialogue is fairly poor

Anvil of Dawn looks great, will definitely check it out. From reading impressions it seems like it's very unique in its style (love the death animations) and comes recommended from dungeon crawler fans, where Stonekeep would be considered probably more of a nostalgic favoring, this seems more the real deal.

Also Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude was added along with Anvil of Dawn, but perhaps we're better off ignoring that one.
 
Anvil of Dawn has amazing atmosphere thanks to the haunting midi soundtrack, the wonderful sprite animations and the really bizarre world. It's quite opressive and even depressing, actually.

The gameplay itself is pretty basic and has some balance issues, but the weird world kept my interest through to the very end.
 
Anvil of Dawn has the best map I've ever seen in an RPG, so very very useful.

Combat is a bit overly easy once you figure out the timing for stepping in and out between enemy swings, but it's still a fun game. Brilliant death animations too.

...wasn't there a widescreen issue with this game or something? Like, playing in widescreen cuts off the top and bottom instead of expanding the left and right? I wonder if that's been addressed yet?
 
Anvil of Dawn is a blast, one of my favorite dungeon crawlers. Fun combat, great dungeons, creepy music. Definitely will be picking it up again.

I'd argue about both points. Ending was abrupt but perfect that it revealed exactly what it needed to and nothing more. It resolves all the story points except the one that's supposed to remain a mystery. The main protagonist is an ass, but I don't see why every game has to feature 'mr charming'.

DotEmu's release of Raiden Legacy is now for purchase on GOG (it's been available at other stores for a while), I believe it comes fairly well recommended to anyone who likes shmups. Hopefully it's in better shape than their release of Raptor 2010 Edition, which desperately needs a patch to fix the movement issues.
 
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena got pulled from Steam by the publisher. Not to mention the recent problems with the Steam version for people who own it, TAGES not allowing activations unless you figure out how to remove TAGES first, as seen here and here. If anyone has been on the fence about buying it, if it were me, I would get it HERE on GOG now.

Anyone here play stuff from GOG on a Mac? How's it work for you? I'm considering a new computer and I'd like to get a Mac. I'm firmly a console gamer first and foremost but I really, really want to check out a lot of the PC games I missed out on in the 90s and early 2000s, as well as the indie games that don't come to consoles but are on GOG and Steam (such as FTL, Cart Life, Papers Please, etc.) A new iMac plus Bootcamp or Crossover can handle that kind of stuff right? I'm a complete idiot when it comes to PC gaming and most computer issues in general, if you can't tell...

Well they have a decent amount of content which runs natively on OS X, (including FTL even), for things that require windows you most likely will be fine with bootcamp. Towards the bottom of every game page they list the system requirements, just pay attention to the GPU and CPU requirements to be sure. Windows emulators (Parallels / CrossOver / Fusion / whatever) also work fairly decently with the older games they sell from what I read, but obviously not everything, bootcamp is a better solution though it's not as convenient. The really older games that use DOSBox they're making run natively on OS X as well, since DOSBox supports OS X it's not very much work.

Edit: If you're not aware, you can just go to their catalog, and select the first "filter by" box to Mac OS X to narrow down the list.
