Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

-The last masterpiece in the zelda franchise is majoras mask
-Bioshock infinite is the best game Levine and his team had made (yes better than system shock )
-Deus ex human revolution is better than the first Deus ex
-Final fantasy 9 is the only great final fantasy game
-Metal gear solid 3 was the last worthy metal gear then it got very embarassing with 4, rising and peace walker
-The last great silent hill game is 2
-The last great castlevania game is Super castlevania 4
-Super metroid is overrated, metroid prime echoes should get the biggest love in the metroid franchise
-Demons souls is much better than Dark souls
-Nier is the best work published by Square since Vagrant story.

Gonna seem weird to say but, I wish certain genres could be more creative. Like a Madden game with a mode where you have to avoid dinosaurs or something. Hell make Call Of Duty: Ghosts a Call of Duty where you fight ghosts. I dunno...

The death of Blitz was the death of any possible interest I may ever have in football.
The best thing that EA Sports ever produced that wasn't SSX was NBA Street. Fuck NBA Jam. I want more SKREET.

To add to the controversial list - Tiny Toons Acme All-Stars was the best sports game I ever played, I'm not even sure if Mario Sports comes close. Konami stuck their god damn foot in that game and did a damn good job. Please, give us an HD rerelease.

Nothing wrong with that :) I like good mechanics too and some FPS I find more enjoyable than others. The melee subgenre is just really hard to do as well which is why there's so few of them so I appreciate the ones that do get made :)

I love arcade and action games too. Hell I enjoy most genres, except dance games where you have to get up and actually move on a mat. My fat ass can't take more than one song before I collapse into a heap and pray I don't die on the spot.

Ha! I remember one time I was in Montgomery and there was this asian kid that looked probably 12-13 stomping away, resting on the bars getting perfects and I was scared for him lol. The look in his face was as if he was slowly fading away into DDR.

I always wanted to play an actual After Burner II Gyro Cabinet tho. That shit looks insane.

EDIT:

One more opinion I forgot about.

Sonic Shuffle was a great board party game on the Dreamcast. I even liked it more than Mario Party. After revisiting it, I see it's flaws, but I still think it was great party game. Also the AI were total bastards.

-Demon's/Dark Souls are not actually "hard" games, at all.

-I hate "retro/8-bit" games be they new or old, I just can't seem to find them playable or enjoyable.

-MGS4 is the best Metal Gear game

-DmC Dante > Old Dante

Nobody disagrees that the strength of Nintendo consoles is Nintendo games, but their first party stuff is getting steadily worse

Spec Ops: The Line is an absolutely soul drainingly boring game who's story is completely ham-fisted and not clever in the slightest. I honestly think people just hype the story so they don't feel sorry for themselves having played through hours of tedious gameplay.

And Yoshi's Island > Super Mario World.

Some more:

The only saving grace of Sleeping Dogs is the Kung-Fu it ripped straight from Arkham Asylum... which did it better.

Vanquish is hackneyed, derivative, dreary and a chore to get through.

Metal Gear Rising's music is terrible.

GTA IV is excellent.

I hate JRPGs.

-Their anime inspired characters, the feminine males, the always smug heroes and the annoying lolitas.
-The artwork is always obnoxious and tiresome. Too much decoration and randomness. Characters look like they are dressed for an abstract fashion show and look ridiculous. Also, hairstyles.
-Their Soundtracks are overrated. All game genres can have great music but in most Top Songs lists, music from various JRPGS take the top spots. I find most of the music in those lists boring.
-Despite looking silly they take themselves way too seriously with over the top drama.
-The random turn based battles. Most annoying thing in videogames.

I hate Final Fantasy: Tactics. I hate the slowness of this fucking game and the fact, that it's such an ugly and blurry mess.

I bought it 3 times, tried to get into it 6 times and still nothing. I love Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Disgaea 3 and FFT:A2 (which I think is a 100 times better game).

Shenmue while ground breaking at the time was boring as hell. It is more boring now than it was then. Yu Suzuki is a genius and visionary however Shenmue is his most boring work. Shenmue was great in its action fighting scenes they were sparse few & far between. S2 was way better but still suffered from a lack of action too bad that rumored VF arpg never became reality.
Yakaza series is far better because action is plentiful.

Also all God of War QTE haters seem to love Shenmue ironically the game coined the term & has an over abundance of quick time events.

HUm , no .

God of war has generic QTE that are either :
-generic sequences to get from point A to point B
-A random QTE sequence as a finisher to kill ennemies

Shenmue actually use the PAD as a way to represent the body. That's why the QTE don't change during chase sequences. It's much better structured because you can understand the logic behind the button they ask you to press.
It goes to the point where they ask you to into the correct Input of a learnable move to finish a QTE sequence. ( happens a lot in shenmue 2 )
A represent the foot , Y the head, and the other 2 represent the hands or the sides of your body( to evade ). Similar games have used a layout such as this afterwards and that's also why shenmue is praised ( exemple, the early Assasin creed games )

Shenmue also had moments where you have to not press some QTE to progress. it used QTE in a way where you had to understand the context first.

Shenmue did QTE as part of the world and integrated it into the gameplay .God of war used QTEs as a easy "win" button.

DMC 1 3 4 > DmC

Sick of reboots

The tomb Raider BS who gives a damn if the story was going to have a man "try" to rape someone when it wasnt going to show shit and shit was going to kill him hardcore anyway

lower quality of games has caused me to pass on titles or wait till they are cheap or used

Next gen systems have done a horrible job of making me give a fuck

Sleeping Dogs combat is nothing like Arkham Asylums combat. It has a counter button and that's the only similarity. Unless you're going to start claiming that all brawlers are rip offs from AA. It's more reminiscent of The Warriors combat system, a lot of the same team made that, and that came before AA!

It's also one of the best open world games this gen.

Now THAT'S controversial. :P

Are you serious, you can't see any other similarities?

EDIT: I'd go so far as to say that they lifted it almost wholesale. No bad thing, but Arkham gets it spot on whilst Sleeping Dogs seems like a poor man's copy.

I usually roll my eyes at the hyperbole of calling Mass Effect 3 or Diablo 3 or whatever 'the worst game ever', but Killzone 2 is one of the most generic, soulless, creatively bankrupt games I've ever played. I payed £5 for it and I still regret it. There is not a speck of charm or ingenuity to be found throughout its formulaic, bland campaign.

Nice graphics though.

Only when countering someone who approaches you then sure, most definitely.

It really does just remind me of other brawlers but more polished and slick. The countering button lets you nicely flow between enemies. With Arkham Asylums combat you don't choose the actual moves you make. It's basically context sensitive to the enemy what move Batman pulls off, what weapon they're holding etc. Batmans combat is more about jumping very quickly from enemy to enemy quickly and incorporating your Batman gadgets into the combos. With Sleeping Dogs you're inputting specific inputs for a specific move like say a fighting game. The fights are tougher (until you unlock all the moves) and I'd go so far as to say Batman is much more timing based. Batman is a very specific style of brawler for that character, it absolutely makes for AA as you are, you know, the goddamn batman :P

Sleeping Dogs reminds me of a slicker Yakuza/Warriors and I do think it's absolutely one of the best around. Especially in an open world game.

There's nothing wrong of course preferring AAs style, it's pretty damn awesome. I just don't agree that they're the same.

Don't get me wrong, there are definitely differences... (Batman's combat is a lot deeper, for example :P) but the 360 degree countering, enemy set-ups, camera positioning, rhythm-based combat etc are all from Batman... (and to a lesser extent Assassin's Creed *spit*). SD is hugely in debt to AA.

Interestingly, when I played AA for the first time, my first thought was "They need to make a Kung-Fu/Waxia/Shaw Brothers game with this mechanic"... et voila!

There's nothing wrong of course preferring AAs style, it's pretty damn awesome. I just don't agree that they're the same.

Fair enough.

I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree :P Which is fine of course!

Just give me Sleeping Dogs 2 please with an even deeper system and even more brutal ways to off people :P

Metal Gear Rising's music is terrible.
This is true. Hokey metalcore kids club junk. No idea why people like it.

I agree (except I paid full price and really regret it), and I also feel this way about Sony's western first party efforts in general. Games like inFamous, Killzone, God of War and Resistance are downright unpleasant to play. I really hope they are focusing on other things for the PS4.

Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is the best street fighter.

Shadow Complex is one of the most overrated games of this generation, except for maybe The Walking Dead.

Red Dead Redemption is awful: just a series of fetch quests where sometimes the fetching is shooting a dude.

Skryim is a broken game with a terrible narrative.

Bioshock 2 is a better game than the original, even if the story isn't as good.

L.A. Noire was boring as fuck.

WoW's recent whimsical turns make it a better product.

Bioshock Infinite is not compelling because of its lack-luster combat.

Two Crude Dudes was one of the most endearing Genesis games I played as a child.

Max Payne 3 is Rockstar's best game of this generation.

You mean... I'm not alone?

I would go so far as to use the word 'gash'.
Nope, you are definitely not alone! It's pretty awful. I honestly can't tell if people are being serious when they say it's great -- but I tend to chalk it up to them associating their pleasant experience of the game with the music (which I cannot share because I thought the game was pretty bad.)

It's especially odd when I see people propping up the metalcore junk soundtrack of MGR while putting down the dubstep in DmC. Metalcore is a shitzillion times worse than dubstep could ever be. Dubstep is not actually that bad -- there are games that use it to great effect to craft an appropriately intense sound. (in action) It's just the Skrillex-esque WHIFF WHOOSH WUB WUB self-parody stuff that sucks.

Is that controversial? It does an amazing job of making you "feel" like you're Batman and you're in control of the situation even though it's actually really loose and sort of repetitive. I feel like most of the praise I read is about that, but you generally have people responding, "it's not even in the same league as Ninja Gaiden Black/Dark Souls/etc." and nobody really disagrees because it's not trying to be precise on that level.

It leaves a lot of room for mistakes, which can get kind of boring after awhile.

Well I do have lots of experience in character action games and that might be it, but I found the combat very deterministic. That is, there is mostly a right, best way to approach a situation with no meaningful choice inbetween given sufficient skill. There is very little time where you can't actually counter, making skilled players untouchable even against blade/shield/tank/armoured goons and ninjas. When the enemy isn't attacking you start throwing punches to get your combo higher to use a finisher move, or just continue is super freeflow mode which is actually better because you won't be left open. You can toss in a gadget or two but they don't provide an advantage that more punching can't surmount. Gun goons can be taken out with a batclaw, or one would be smart enough to neutralize them before the fighting happens. The stealth portions are actually quite fun since it's very open-ended as to how to deal with a group of crooks.

My first post in this thread but.....

I liked DmC 2. Fuck the haters telling me it's terrible. Mind you, it's the only one I've played outside of the newest iteration, but I quite enjoyed it :(. Played it when I was about 15.

It kind of works in context, although I absolutely had to turn the music off for the showdown with Sam. It totally ruins the atmosphere.

Haven't played DmC, myself, so couldn't possibly comment.

if by cheesy you mean bad, yes. In no universe should IT'S TIME FOR JACK TO LET ERRRRR RIP crack a smile from anybody. Just pain.

I thought that shit was hilarious. Combined with the music that plays when fighting Monsoon who could anyone NOT take it seriously?

It's like you didn't even give it a chance to be stupid.

Yeah, that fight really got hurt by the music. It felt like a tribute to the windy showdowns of samurai films of olden times (I think Harakiri came to mind mostly) -- silence would've been the best soundtrack.

I can assure you... it was! :)

Personally it reminded me Sanjuro... especially since Sam looks very similar to a young Mifune.

Microsoft no longer cares about core gaming or gamers. They found a rotation to spoon feed us the same titles over and over - Gears, Halo, Forza. This is just my opinion based on how much they seem to have changed since 2005.

- This opinion could drastically change come tomorrow / E3 2013. I hope it does.

Aria of Sorrow is the best Castlevania and its quality is far to be matched.

Every Mario Kart is awesome.

The two DS Zeldas sucked. They are way too easy and "central dungeon" is a terrible idea.
Every other Zelda game is excellent and amazing. (Not counting Zelda II as a Zelda game.)

Sonic Adventure 2; Battle is awesome, especially the Knuckles/Rouge part and its multiplayer counterpart.

Incredibly boring games: World of Warcraft, Minecraft, Diablo series, Assassin's Creed series, DOTA series and every DOTA-like.

This is one of the most objective and non-taste based views in the thread, really.

MS abandoned the "core" when the New Xbox Experience premiered. The original focus on core gamers, hardcore, enthusiast, etc was itself a marketing move to push the Xbox 1 as the kick-ass 'bro' console. But it did benefit enthusiasts in a general sense.

Then Microsoft eventually returned to their real goal, which is securing the living room with a set-top box. Thing is, the Xbox brand is still coasting on a huge amount of built up mindshare among young male gamers ages 18-30, who still see it as the hardcore platform of choice.

Gonna seem weird to say but, I wish certain genres could be more creative. Like a Madden game with a mode where you have to avoid dinosaurs or something. Hell make Call Of Duty: Ghosts a Call of Duty where you fight ghosts. I dunno...

Back before this gen PES, This Is Football and ISS had modes/cheats for things like that.

I'm enjoying Metroid: Other M lots. It really doesn't deserve the hate. I would go further, and say that it's one of the best looking games on the Wii. Also, I would be delighted if future Metroid games went for that design and art direction.

The GameCube is easily and by some distance Nintendo's worst console. Much preferred the Dreamcast for that era.

LOZ: Twilight Princess is infinitely better with the Wiimote. Wouldn't want to play it with a GameCube controller. Love the Wiimote!!

I also despise the derision the Dreamcast gets (i.e., the expression 'to Dreamcast itself', etc.). Sure, it was Sega's last console, but it is, in my opinion, more relevant than the XBox and very much ahead of its time.

ISS/Pro Evolution pisses on Fifa's sorry, pathetic corpse.

Squall is a more compelling character than Cloud, and had more depth. Also, Lion Heart >>> Omnislash.

I'll take the Impressionist art of LOZ: Skyward Sword or the colouring-book-esque graphics of Yoshi's Island over those Killzone 4 cinematics and photorealism every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

I find the thought that the NSMB series as 'lazy efforts, look the same, etc.' fucking ignorant and dumb. One could just as well say the same about Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles and CD - After all, they have their Green Hill Zone equivalents, familiar sprites and superficially, they don't seem any more different than NSMB games. However, there are differences in all cases. Same goes for Metroidvania or Mega Man 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10. Except they really aren't the same, and it's rather unfair to beat them with a stick.

Bayonetta is my PS360 Game of the 7th Generation.

Lego City: Undercover and Retro City Rampage are better than the GTA games.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing: Transformed (Wii U Limited Edition) is better than all the home console Mario Karts.
This isn't a slight on the Mario Kart Series; I rate them very highly, but Sonic&ASRT raised the bar, and I really hope that Mario Kart Wii U/8 delivers.

Alright. As You Were.

Gaming would be better off if consoles never evolved past Super Nintendo and Genesis, and developers would still be making games for those systems. All graphical advancements would be PC-only. After those two consoles the technological improvements have not been an advantage but a detriment as far as the quality of games is concerned.

Wait. This is just common sense!

It just seems like every time I say that, even around friends, they go off on my like i'm insane or something. But you're right. I re-watched the 360 premier from MTV a long while back. Man that was horrible, music acts, celebrities, it was just lame all around. They also called it an "entertainment" box on many occasions so that just reiterates that it was their goal all along.
