The digging of CF keeps striking me as alienating those that did not/will not play CF though. There are a lot of newcomers to this AC so a jab at this game would be better imo.

Unfortunately I can't... I don't have a 3DS capture kit (costs about $400, of which I don't have the money for). My capture card will only allow for consoles (wii, wii U, ps3, etc)

Yep, literally just choose the same colours it chose for your pallette and then copy it. Like paint by numbers.
Aye, 32 x 32. I gave it a 128 x 128 source image.
You need a square source, and cartoony comes out a little better. Less colours the better. That said...

Anyone know if the 3DS play coins you get daily can be used in this game for anything? I loved using them in Resident Evil Revelations and think that's the best game use of them. I think it would be cool if they could be used to turn into bells or buy exclusive items.

You use it as an easy to follow guide so you can "draw" those patterns into your own game. QR codes are going to make it even easier.
In Animal Crossing you can make custom patterns for clothes, furniture, your town flag, etc. The thing is, you have to do them in a 32x32 pixel grid with a limited color palette.
