Gimme' a new Silent Hill developed by SCEA Japan/Project Siren.

just seeing a Silent Hill with proper next-gen tech would be enough for me.

Homecoming and Downpour were such a mixed bag.
Some moments looked brilliant and legitimately a gen above the PS2 era, but most of the games looked worse than SH2, 3, and 4.

This is a series that could seriously use a bump. Could be a good one for Sony to snag, but knowing Konami, they'd price the rights out of anyone's range and just let it die.

I think they'll be equal but with Sony having slightly a bit more due to supposed heavy Japanese support.

If you're more into a Western lineup that rose up during this generation (Dead Rising 3, Mirror's Edge 2, Fallout 4), then Microsoft's stuff might be for you.

If you're more into a mix of stuff with Japanese classics (Final Fantasy, potentially The Last Guardian, inFamous), then Sony's stuff might be for you.

Based on the exclusives you listed, I would go for XBO.

I would think they'd have some goodwill with the whole MGS series and PS brand relationship, but you're probably right.

The Evil Within is all the Silent Hill I need.

It's going to be stunning.

Downpour is one of only two games this gen I stopped playing because the technical performance was just abysmal. (PS3 version) The framerate would drop to a point where the game actually froze for a second, completely unplayable.

The other game was Enslaved (also PS3 version) which had similar problems, not near as bad a drop but it was all over the place.

as talented as Mikami is with gameplay and settings, I simply can't imagine him ever having the nuanced touch and creepy subtlety to ever make a game close to the best of Silent Hill.

For all of the awesome atmosphere TEW is bound to have, it will also likely have hammy dialogue, shootbang weapon upgrades, and cliché character stereotypes.
I'd love to be wrong. ;)

Well, dialogue wise I can't say I share any high opinions of Silent Hill, however yes, in terms of just the tone of atmosphere, and having it play into the progression, RE4 is leagues behind SH2, but just from the little we've seen of TEW, I get a sense of that being much closer to SH than RE, for me at least.

EMBARRASSING REVELATION: Well,. not really but I've never actually played any of the SH games. I've come to learn a lot about them due to Twin Perfect's The Real Silent Hill Experience, but that's it. I've always wanted to play them, but never had the chance.

All the stuff I've seen from those videos make the games out to be phenomenal. I really want to give them a spin some time.

Are they on PSN? I don't want to play the HD Collection.

Only the first game.

EDIT: They're not Xbox Originals either, shame.

My suggestion?

-get the original on PSN (I think it's like $9.99)
-get your hands on the PS2 Greatest Hits version of SH2 (it has an extra sub-game on the disc); OR get the PC version if you have a decent comp.*
-rinse/repeat with SH3*
-watch play-throughs of Homecoming and Downpour on YouTube.
-try Shattered Memories if you have a Wii
-take some time out of your day to have a good cry

OPTIONAL: Try SH4. It gets a lot of flack and is an acquired taste (different from the others), but a truly unique game none-the-less.*

*-are based on you having a PS2 and/or early BC PS3.

I want Sony to create a new IP with a female lead that doesn't fall into the ol tropes of being sexual and shit. I'm kinda soured on them ever since I heard they didn't support 'Remember Me' because of female lead, I mean there are so many other reasons not to support that game like the fact it plays like ass.

Sony have delved into main female characters in the past like UmJammerLammy, Primal and Heavenly Sword whereas only the former doesn't fall into a stereotype.

I hope they give it another chance and create a franchise centered on a strong female character and have strong gameplay.

No, afraid not.

Ah shit, this is why having a shitty HD collection sucks. No easy way to play the games in HD without playing severely butchered games, and no incentive to put the old SD PS2 ports on the PSN store.

Well, shit.

Well, I'm already crying every day so I think I'll just work in a few extra minutes for this.

(I might just do something crazy like buy a PS2 again or something. Paying a 100$ for a PS2 is still a little too much for me though with new consoles coming out within a year.)

The technical performance of Downpour really did sour what was otherwise an excellent game. Well, that and the uninspired enemy design. I can't believe it was released in that state.

Nowhere has it ever been said that Sony dropped RM because of a female lead. How would that even make sense considering one of their biggest games this year is Beyond, which has a female lead?

Who else wants Dark Cloud 3?
Me :/

That sucks. It's actually pretty alright.

y-you mean like Beyond?

.

Also, Uncharted has Chloe. Sure she may not be the lead character, but she's badass.

The developers of Remember Me mentioned that they couldn't find a publisher for their game because of the female lead and it is known that they did approach Sony. Also the only reason Sony is giving a pass to Beyond is because of Ellen Page.

Original female character not celebrity. Sony needs an Uncharted of next gen but with a female lead. That would be awesome, kinda sick of playing as generic white male characters.

Sony was the original publisher. They simply dropped the game at some point and that's when they had difficulty finding a publisher because the game featured a female lead.

Epic owns the IP; but I would imagine that MS would do what they can to secure the exclusive publishing rights to that IP this generation as well; but who knows

MS has first refusal rights, I believe. So it'll only come out for PS4 if MS for some reason decides they don't want it.

You're getting one this year.

It was never said they dropped it because of the female lead. That doesn't make any sense, because of Beyond. They dropped it, because it looked pretty mediocre back then and still does today. They probably realized that Quantic Dream is enough for their French portfolio.

And when the sales for Remember Me hit, you'll know every other publisher was right.

It's not on the publisher to force female protagonists, it's on the audience to want them, and they don't.
