Sony CEO Kaz Hirai: PS4 is first and foremost a game console

The only app I have ever used on a console is Netflix. Other than that, I have only used my consoles for games. I did enjoy PlayStation Home but I would count that in the realm of gaming.

Anyway, this is how it should be. The social apps and media features should be implied NOT the games. I hate having to assume great games will be on my video games console.

As it should be.

Is this really Sony being focused differently or just Kaz and Sony playing off of the reaction to Microsoft's unveiling and trying to pull on the right cords to gain people's interest? I think it's the latter.

Sony has a very clear message: PS4 is all about the videogames.

And when you look at the H/W & OS design of the console, you can believe them. They will deliver the highest performing gaming console with more resources (CPU, GPU, memory) devoted to gaming than their competition.

Obviously he's full of crap, but at least he's saying the right things at the right time. The people paying attention now are core gamers. So tell them what they want to hear. I'm not sure who Microsoft thought they were talking to with their reveal, but it sure as heck wasn't core gamers.

This was their answer since February...so no it's not the latter

They've been saying exactly this since the reveal conference so no. But it's good they are talking about it again after MS unveiled their new DVR box and let ppl know

It's like you missed the Playstation Meeting earlier this year.

Pretty much this. Lets rewind back to 2001 shall we....a very different message from Mr. Harai lol

"We see a convergence of entertainment--film, music, broadcasting," said Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America. "We are obviously the brand for the living room."

Didnt matter then, wont matter now.

they have been singin the same tune since the reveal months before Microsofts shitshow. So I would imagine this was their angle from the beginning. Microsoft does not really seem to even know whatthe Xbone is supposed to be at this point in time.

It's nice to hear that games are the #1 focus, but I also don't want the app system to be exactly like the ps3 where you need to launch a seperate, slow loading app for each entertainment option outside of games.

Not at all .Look at late this gen and you can see sony still putting out games. Even when ps2 was dominating they still kept putting out games and didn't rest of their laurels. You can clearly see the difference in vision for both companies.

all this momentum and good buzz can be destroyed in a moment.

The thing about Sony is that something dumb is waiting right around the corner at all times....

The Vita looked gdlk and then the memory card (or something else) came out and the hype teetered out (also no games).

I feel like Sony has something dumb up their sleeves sadly they always seem to.

But man they are doing all the right things so far...so I hope I am wrong.

If it isn't the DRM shit (which I doubt they say anything about if it's negative during the PC), then I expect them to either take too long on PS3 or Vita (lulz) or hit us with another Wonderbook.

As a fan of the Vita, I do feel that it has a decent library. Is it vast? No but there are more games on it than I can play at this time. I don't feel that it's possible to spend too much time on the Vita or PS3 because they are both still valuable platforms. They are still selling well (atleast the PS3 is) and they need to remind the gaming audience who can't afford the PS4 that they can still buy great games on the PS3 and Vita.

I'm with you. Sony has a good PR team, which is more than we can say about Microsoft at this moment.

This is important to remember. It seems like so long ago that the PS3 was essentially a gigantic whale carcass in the video game ocean.

He clearly said they are going for the gamers first and foremost and the rest of it will follow afterwards. How is that a different tune? 2011 is how many years after PS3 launch again? If you really wanted to make a point you could have gone to the PS3 launch year...when SOny was doing a current-MS, and was really falunting all those media capabilities. Still won't make sense though because this is a new product. So you would really just have to rewind back to 'February' this year and you will have your answer. Especially since this is regarding the XBone and not the 360.

Sony hasn't changed their tune so far...they just re-stated it post MS conference

It's like you missed the Playstation Meeting earlier this year.

Not at all. They were speaking to the core gamers at the PS reveal as well. It's in their best interest to speak to the one group of people that actually care about a console before it's been released. That's why I question what Microsoft was thinking.

They have very similar goals, and very different ways of expressing it. You can't tell me the company that locked down NFL Sunday Ticket on a console doesn't care about casuals.

See here's the thing; I know console unveilings don't happen in one event. They happen over a period of several months. From the second Sony revealed the PS4, there were a ton of unanswered questions such as what is PSN going to be like, what's the OS going to be like what services are they going to give you and so forth. I knew those things were going to be coming at a later time and possibly at E3. Microsoft did the reverse, they showed off the OS, the services, and so forth and said games would be held back for E3.

It's not really about the focus but what part of the puzzle they showed you first. There's no doubt Sony's system was going to have media, and there's no doubt the Xbox One will have games and in both cases we don't know the full picture of either platform. You can bet had this not blown up in MS's face, you'd hear bitching about showing off services at E3 for the PS4 because people complain about these things in the past. Look back at every E3 press conference in the last decade.

It's like people have short memories here and can't correlate to how things have played out before. I see this as Sony taking advantage of Microsoft getting sucker punched and being kicked on the ground. Sony's just adding a kick too.

Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of things Sony is saying, but what is more important is what they're actually doing such as how they're approaching developers, the system architecture and so forth. You guys are really eating up what Kaz is saying at face value though, which is another thing Sony is doing good at this time around, PR. That's all it is.

They do, even ps2 did but not at the expense of games. They still keep putting out games and a variety on a consistent bases.

As someone who really enjoys new technology i am just not that excited about Sony's system. So what...its a game system. I have already had game systems. I want a box that can do more than just play a fing game. The all-in-one appeals to me and the game system does not. If i only wanted a game system i would just get a WII U....

It's suppose be be a game system, why would it be any different? People expected that last gen,etc

they tried that and it didn't work for them (blu ray, spiderman font etc etc)

at the end of the day PS3 was only successful when the games came and when the price was cut

This really was the biggest problem of the PS3. $599 murdered their chances in the beginning. Everything else would have been fine if it wasn't for the price.

Except each company laid out their vision in their conference. MS is aiming for tv consumers, games are a small part. Movies and music are just as important to them for their upcoming system.
Which is necessary to a degree to answer the mainstream question of "why do I need a new Xbox?" The assumption that it will play games is a given for those people (and most other sane ones). These people are who MS was focusing on at their reveal. Sony obviously chose to talk to the vocal minority.

On CNBC today, Kaz talked about restoring focus to all product lines. I want to believe. Strip all the dumb stuff out and sell me a killer games machine. $399 or bust Kaz.

Can't wait for E3. Show us the fucking dragons!!!!

New tv, new car etc.... All do the same things better.

And ps3 and 360 already do all-in-one. My ps3 runs my tv and dvr. But games are still central.

Why would you need a new xbox? Did they ask that when 360 was coming? Also you said it yourself at the end that they don't care about the core first and foremost.

You wrote all that but missed the point entirely. How can it be an answer in 'response' to Xbone when it's what they have been saying since FEBRUARY! We knew nothing of the Xbone then. The conference, the interviews etc that followed said the same message. It's the angle they went for from the start.

You are trying too hard. If you can't remember what Sony has been saying months before XBone and the MS bad PR situation, not sure how you can call others as having short memories.

People aren't only going by the PR. Developer feedback. The hardware. Indie dev response. These and more play a part in this.

Microsoft = Reveal additional features then games

Bad.

Sony = Reveal games then additional features

Good.

Both = Games + Additional Features
Indeed the main difference between the PS4 and Xbox One is the current marketing strategy. That said, the first TV advert for Xbox One was for a videogame, not an 'entertainment' feature.

This is a gaming enthusiast forum (for the most part) so of course we are going to be more hyped for the pure gaming console.

as for me, I personally don't need a do it all box, I already have other devices that do all those things. The point isn't that all the box should do is play games but rather the other stuff shouldn't be the main focus.

At the end of the day, it will be known as a videogame console.

Then again this is the society with Smartphones that can do a bunch of shit but is only a passable phone lol.

Words certainly aren't everything, but I'm still very eager to see what Sony offers this time around. Almost as eager as I had been to get this NeoGAF account activated, woo!

They didnt need to ask that with the OG Xbox not being anywhere close to as successful as they wanted it to be whereas the 360 is still topping the charts here monthly. And no I didnt say anything of the sort. What I said was they chose to speak to the non-core at their reveal....

Because, they're playing off what happened to Microsoft to gain favor. The fact that he's explicitly pointing this out now should be obvious to that. They started with games, but anyone who has even a grasp of what's going on knows that Sony would have to talk about services sooner or later. They just chose to talk about them at a later point in time where as Microsoft got it out of the way first. You can't even totally fault Microsoft for wanting to focus on games at E3 when both companies get a lot of shit for talking about anything not related to the core gamer at their press conference. Both were going to talk about that stuff and both were going to talk about games. The only difference was the order of the reveal. This feels more like Sony just taking advantage of the situation for some good PR rather than one system being more about games than the other.
