You can save manually. But it also saves whenever you leave your town to visit another, or whenever someone leaves or enters your town.

How do you fix your grass?

Fix?
- Plant flowers over the dirt and water them daily.
- Most of the grass should grow back over a 2 weekish period.

Prevent?
- Just don't run. Walking speed is surprisingly speedy in this verison.
- Alternatively, place patterns over the areas you run. From what I have seen, they apparently prevent grass wear.

Note that Fertilizer does NOT affect grass growth... there was a lot of rumours regarding this around the Japanese release but it's confirmed to have no effect.
