Official March NPD Thread (The story? PS3 = weak, SW sales = insane)

So it's something like this now?

Pos. System Units sold
-------------------------------------
1 PlayStation2 37.975.000
2 Game Boy Advance 35.584.000
3 Xbox 14.500.480
4 Gamecube 11.746.000
5 Nintendo DS 10.393.000
6 PSP 7.206.000
7 Xbox 360 5.227.000
8 Wii 2.094.000
9 PlayStation3 1.190.000

Wii passed 2 million sold, DS passed 10 million.

Whaa? These last two months of DS are right up there with the best months GBA ever had that weren't November of December. Certainly it never reached a million in March or April.
Really? I could've sworn that GBA had some million-selling months other than Nov/Dec.

lol at all the people saying PS3 is fine and they are worried about 360.

SDF never gives up.

:lol :lol

I think it's fair to say that 360 is not pulling away enough to declare that it's too late for Sony to catch up. Is it not possible that most Xbox owners have already bought 360s while most PS2 owners are still on the fence? I'm just speculating though. I don't really know the answer to the question since I know several PS2-only guys with 360s and several Xbox-only guys who are still waiting.

Does anyone else still think it's odd to see 360 multiplatform games beating out PS3 versions? I know that 360 has a bigger userbase but it's still so strange after years of Sony dominance.

My predictions :

DS : 400k (-108k)
Wii : 290k (+31k)
360 : 200k (+1k)
PS3 : 160k (+30k)
PS2 : 200k (-80k)
PSP : 260k (+80k)

330k off total

I'm expecting Wii to do quite a bit better in May. It's sad how dependent the system is on Nintendo's shipments. If Nintendo had 750,000 out for the month they'd all be sold.

Can we get software sales for Puzzle Quest (both versions), Tiger Woods (Wii), Sonic and the Secret Rings, and PS3's second-highest seller?

Dude, it's the Playstation 3. If you'd gone around predicting sales like this 12 months ago, even at this price, people wouldn't have came close to believing you. Sure, you can make a perfectly sensible argument that it's price is holding it back, but nobody expected this to happen.

I would have expected higher sales, regardless of price. But then I'd have also predicted a stronger game library, at least in regards to first party games. That's something that is starting to really disappoint me. I guess in some ways I appreciate that Sony developers are not rushing the games to the market, but come the **** on. The 360 was in a similar situation last year, but then it didn't have the type of competition the PS3 has, not to mention that Sony is trying to sell this at a higher price than the competition.

... what? Are you seriously trying to argue that GDC demonstrations of software that is nowhere near being released should have system selling power? :lol

Did you not read penny arcade? :lol Haven't you noticed how much people like those things and have been "convinced" of what the PS3 is selling? :lol Weren't you there last month when motorstorm was seriously expected to sell consoles? :lol

Am I the only one who really can't see the DS catching upto the GBA in America?

291k for a $150 game and this is just tracking a few days of sale.....that's crazy.

I'm not sure why anyone is surprised at this. We knew within a couple of days they'd sold at least 200K, because that's how many people were on the leaderboards. And you have to assume that smoe weird, small fraction of people never hook up to the net,

Most multiplatform action games would sell better or at least tie on the original Xbox than on the PS2 even though the install base was lower. This of course was in the last year and a half of the Xbox's life.

If my calculations are correct the PS3 has now fallen behind the 360 in their respective 5 month launch periods in the US. Time for a new write up Luke Smith.

Try a brand new hardware being outsold by an obsolete hardware with a monstrously successful successor on the market at the same time. That's why it's funny.

Also, it looks liki ioi's Weekly sales experiment is over. These numbers are wildly different from his.

This month's biggest losers
1) Sony & the PS3
2) Ioi/Broshnat as his sham is revealed

This month's biggest winners
1) Nintendo - Duh - all the way across the board
2) 360 SW - especially GH 2
3) NPD (as the first month without a leak?)
4) NeoGAF (first with the sales?)

Yeah, DS always ****s everyone over. :lol

MS is just not going to cut the price on the 360's until they feel threatened. PS3 isnt scaring MS at all right now (And I bet MS is surprised by that). MS also doesnt feel that they are competing with the Wii. So I dont expect a price drop until end of summer.

Elite did hold the 360 back some I am sure of it. I wouldnt purchase a premium with the Elite just $80 more for 100GB of extra space. Yes it may not be the most economic drive for $80 more.

MotorStorm, sure. But talking about demonstrations of future games and services as if they are seriously expected to be system sellers now, that makes you look like a bit of dummy. Well, dummy or instigator.

I expected it to be up YOY significantly due to an incredible amount of good software and large availability in the channel. If you remember, last March was the 360's last supply constrained month.

I don't see why this deserves rationalization.

Sonycowboy, obviously the PS3 is up to its spiderman-font logo in shit, but it's to be expected and I'm not surprised.

And that incredible amount of good software and availibility is exactly the reason the 360 has been two steps ahead of the PS3 from the start. I'm willing the bet the original Xbox didn't do that much better in it's second march, if you put these numbers in the context of the price and unforeseen consumer buying habits(PS2...GBA!?) I still call those numbers solid. Not great, not spectacular, but certainly MS is riding a steady track where as Sony is on one ****ed up road.

This thread NEEEEEEEEEEDS Crackdown and Virtua Fighter 5 sales numbers. HW is pretty damn uninteresting, aside from the obvious wtf@DS. Need to see how terribly Crackdown fell and whether or not VF5 broke 70k LTD.

not really

a few did start stronger, yes, but i wouldn't classify that as "most"

and even on those few, the strength of the ps2 userbase would eventually win out.

"Why March NPD Condemns Sony"

Put in a price drop next month for both the 360 & PS3 of actual substanence, then things will look interesting.

Till then, you can basically repeat every month after this with slight variations of the same.

D.

Consumers - "MS, you got the games, just drop the price man, come on! I'm ready to jump in!"

Investors/shareholders/the head guys - "We lost 4 billion dollars on that last system we made. **** yo price drop! lolz, announce the newer, more expensive SKU that we probably profit on, and also a $180 hard drive. Chop chop!"

Consumers - "lolz, I'll just replace my PS2 and get a DS or something"

Peetah - "oh come on! You know you guys want this!"

Top 10 SW

PS2 GOD OF WAR II 833K
360 TOM CLANCY'S GHOST RECON: ADVANCED WARFI 394K
360 GUITAR HERO 2 W/ GUITAR 291K

WII PLAY W/ REMOTE 273K
PS3 MOTORSTORM 199K
NDS DIDDY KONG RACING 189K
NDS SPECTROBES 165K
360 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL 2K7 165K
PS2 MLB '07: THE SHOW 164K
360 DEF JAM ICON 148K

On the other side of things, despite lower hardware sales, the 360 continues to dominate software charts.

I just want to know 2 things. Does anyone know how many days of GHII that is for.....and Who the F*** is buying Def Jam Icon?

If this game isn't proof that someone allowed casual gamers in our freaking 360 user base....I don't know what is.

Okay, forget Sony. I'm not talking about Sony. Yes, the numbers are good by comparison. Gamecube's numbers are good by comparison.

As Ghalleon indicated, it's trending downward. Not by much, but it needs a drop-- which is what I suggested. The numbers are not where they could be, and certainly not to where MS is given the ability to put away Sony. Not that Sony is going to move anywhere anytime soon, but again, we're not talking about them.

I don't personally find the original Xbox's march sales all that germane. It's price was lower and it's a machine with different expectations.

Holy cow! PS2 beating Wii. No one wants the PS3? What's up with that? Why not pay a little more for the PS3? You can play PS2 games on it!!!!!

Pretty good numbers for Spectrobes, a 3rd party DS game. Goes to show that if you pick your market, and advertise the hell out of it in Nintendo Power then you can do quite well.

GBA continues to be awesome. Release Mother 3 in NA immediately. Thanks.

Xbox 360 does great softwarewise (I didn't expect GRAW2 to do so well) but takes a nosedive hardwarewise. Elite effect? I don't know.

DS, PS2 and even Wii sales (crap for this month) make me believe, more than ever, that a +$400 price tag should never be accepted.

thank you current-gen :) **** overpriced HW.
