i figured this is a good thread as any for this question as i didn't want to open another thread. I'm dusting off my 3DS after not having time/money to get games. Which one should i buy?

- Luigis Mansion
- Animal Crossing
- NSMB2
- DKCR (i have on Wii but never played it)
- Fire Emblem (never really played one of those, not sure if i dig them)
- Virtues Last Reward (played and loved the first one but i have a lot of reading to do for finals so this might not be the best option)

leaning towards AC since playing a game while it is new is always fun.

There's a 3DS recommendation thread. Anyway, I suggest to play Donkey Kong on the Wii. If you only have money for one, I wouldn't go for FE. I didn't play this series before either and this new one didn't do much for me, so I wouldn't risk this - unless you really like the demo that's available. VLR is probably one game you could get the most out of (30 hours+) and the one that I've had the most fun with, but if you also don't have too much time because of a learning schedule, I suggest Luigis Mansion or Animal Crossing in short burts every now and then.

Fire Emblem Awakening has a free demo with the first two chapters. You could try downloading the playing it to see if the game appeals to you.

Skyward Sword's features might be devisive to longtime fans, but I would 100% enjoy the same motion gameplay/looting in a different IP.

I love the controls, I hate the structure. So rigged. I can't lose myself and just explore.

So yeah, give me the same type of controls in a bigger more organic world. You know, if SS had had some caves like TP or something, that would have solved a lot of my issues.

Don't suppose anyone's posted this yet?

[Wind Waker] is one of the weakest entries, the only redeeming point of the game are the graphics (hyperbole, but the game was mediocre and dragged a lot).

While I agree with sooooome of what you said, particularly the quoted part, and while I'd posit that Aonuma might not be the most ideal Zelda producer (I'd give that gig to Tezuka if I could), he can definitely be credited with a lot of the franchise's advances, although imo the series' best entries were prior to his tenure.

Honestly, all the series needs is a bit of challenge (which Skyward Sword brought back to some degree), and to stop patronising the everloving shit out of the player. All of its other components, from design, to gameplay, to dungeons, to music etc, are still superb.

Definitely. I was so ready to fly a bird over the Hylian continent, but I guess Wii wasn't up to it. The world layout in Xenoblade/X is definitely what I want to see in Zelda now.

anyone else buy the Nintendo Gamecube controller adapter for WiiU? I just bought it on amazon after seeing it on twitter and was wondering if anyone had impressions. If it'll work I will have my dream come true for the new smash and my cube controller back again

WHO SAID THIS

I'LL HURT 'EM

Calm down there, buddy. It's ok for people not to like things, even incredible things.

Anyway, we're a just a few days away from the direct and I'm sure we've got our measured expectation glasses on, right? Right? Don't want to get too excited over the announcements that will be made or get overly angry when they bring up not-as-popular topics.

So the direct will probably have time set aside for:
-The summer Wii U update features
-Miiverse on 3DS or a dedicated mobile application
-Miiverse activity

After that there will still be plenty of time for them to show off Reto's Ice Climbers revival styled after Army of Two, complete with Nana screaming "Revive me!" to Popo.

I doubt for the new smash bros, it probably wont support gc controllers because its a 3rd party accessory. But the old smash bros will work just fine in Wii mode.

All I want, other than all the games mentioned here and new IPs... is a WiiU Gamepad SIGNAL BOOSTER so I can play from anywhere in my house.
Please make it so.

So divided into a linear set of open areas with little of interest inside?

Skyward Sword gained a lot from its more dense distribution of gameplay, which in turn was more easily implemented by its linear structure. But Zelda definitely needs a return to the more open overworlds of the earlier games.

Twilight Princess had been such a by-the-numbers sequel that I had lost most of my interest in the franchise and nearly wrote Skyward Sword off before seeing it. I just hope that the poor sales of Skyward Sword don't send the series running backwards.

I feel the largest, structural change to the world they could make to Zelda that would significantly impact the experience is the complete removal of zones. I guess you could call that making it "open world" but I don't think they'd need to significantly increase the size of the overworld to make a big difference.

Actually, look at Ocarina of Time's Hyrule Field versus Twilight Princess'. Twilight Princess' is divided into zones and feels a lot smaller. It seemed really stupid at the time - Wind Waker didn't limit the size of their world in that way.

Secondly, I'd go with Luigi's Mansion. The game has so much personality and is a blast to play.

aight thanks guys for the recommendations. still not sure what to buy though, probably just roll a dice or something. DLing that FE demo right now.

If only Nintendo would take care of this.
It's the only video/audio transmission that runs at 60fps with no input lag...
Brilliant but too short.

TP is supposed to be a direct sequel so I expected it to be such. My regret is actually that it wasn't structured more like OoT. Nostalgia aside, my real regret is that I really wanted to see it as the same world but older.

I agree that Zelda's formula simply can't have a sprawling world like other adventure games. The worlds are designed to be much more interactive (climbing, crawling, digging, puzzles, etc.) so there's a much bigger focus on rigid structure.

IIRC it didn't help that different regions in Skyward Sword were designed by different groups; there wasn't a lot of crossover. Lanaryu region was still magnificent though.

Xenoblade's world wasn't perfect, but it was massive, nearly seamless, and full of landmarks. X is going to let me fly around in a badass mech and fight giants.

I had to go back and watch Geoff Keighley's interview with Reggie last year for laughs. I completely forgot Nintendo didn't show the Wonderful 101 off at all in their press conference last year. Sometimes I don't know what they're thinking.

Anyone else dreading the innevitable Wii Fit U segment of the Direct? Even if it's short, it's still precious time they could be using to talk about something we care about.

I kind of hope they talk about it first, just to get that shit out of the way so the Hype Train can come through without crashing.

I don't think TP felt smaller at all. There was a lot of empty space but overall the game felt huge, much larger in general than OoT.

Wind Waker's world would be amazing if they took out about 50% of the empty water between the islands. They structured the map the way they did due to hardware constraints at the time but they could conceivably pull something like that off with WW:HD.

Bah. Now that the thought has occurred to me, I know that I'm going to disappointed when it doesn't happen. It makes too much sense for it not to happen, meaning it makes too much sense for nintendo to actually do it :-(

Wouldn't the easier solution be to simply create an in-game justification for a "boat add-on" that boosts speed, thus reducing travel time? Granted, that also makes too much sense, so Nintendo probably won't do it.

Message to Nintendo: Stories in videogames suck, especially yours. Every single one of them. The story of Mario Galaxy, FF, DQ, all your Zelda games, MGS, etc etc. Stories are a means to an end, keep them short and simple. NSMB, SMG2, DKCR are games released by you that got the story right. Bad guy destroys the world, you destroy the bad guy. Bad guy kidnap the princess, you rescue the princess. Bad guy steal your bananas, you beat the crap out of him. END

This type of thinking really gets me miffed. So are you saying that games in general shouldn't have lore, worldbuilding, etc? Because that all well and good for those series that have other mediums that can flesh it all out. FF and DQ have mangas, MGS has Kojima and the eventual movie (plus the digital comics, etc...) even Zelda has Hyrule Historia.

Mazza on the other hand has none of this. No mangas that aren't just collections of gag strips, no serious attempt at a movie, no lavish art and timeline book, nothing. In fact, the devs have to basically force other, creative teams (IS) to remove things that made the series memorable in the first place. For example: Bowsers dialouge is one of the most memorable parts in SMRPG, TTYD and even in SPM. In the game that had Miyahons meddling, Bowser did not have one single word of dialouge. Not one; in a series that gave him most of the personality we saw today. Don't you think that's kind of a warning sign?

It just seems to leach into the fact that the industrys fans see the series as a scapegoat for the status quo. I often hear " If Mario has DLC/a story/some other modern addition I'm quitting video games." Not even giving the possibility that ut could lead to something inventive or usefull, just simply shooting it down before it can even try. I'm sorry, but thats BS. Mario 3 could have very well been another lost levels scenario. The first game sold tons, why not give them even more of what they want? Because they wanted to push the limits the world set on themselves. It's why SMW2 had a special graphics chip. It's why Galaxy looks like it does. Because they didnt settle for less.

Tl;dr: A truly great game needs all of its aspects to be great. And by simply shooing away ANY one aspect (especially when theres no other place to get said aspect) you're shooing away the possibility of something majestic being greater than it could hope to be.

Sorry for the rant, it wasnt directed at you by any means, I'm just tired of this line of thinking over a series I love.

There was a warp system, though I doubt people liked using the WW to activate it. Twice if you needed to change the wind.

I'm excited to find out more about the User Created Communities for Miiverse that Wii Fit U will introduce.

I'm sure they'll be touched on again then, but I'm expecting a 3DS Direct during E3 in addition to the big Direct, and I'm guessing Miiverse 3DS will be revealed then.

True, Miiverse for 3DS is big news so if there really is a separate 3DS Direct we don't yet know about then that'll get covered there. But Wii U firmware stuff is not really E3 material.

Hmm, maybe. Cutting the world's size in half might take away from the grandeur and scope of the game.

I still remember the sense of wonder I got while sailing under a starry sky, the wind at my back, and how that tranquility was smashed with the appearance of a giant squid. Those were great moments but it wasn't consistently that wonderful.

I believe the size of the ocean is an important part. Honestly, I think this is simply a UI problem like with the Water Dungeon in OoT. The internet deems it Teh Worst Thing Evar when it only really needs a quick and easy UI to make getting through it less painful. Touch-screen Wind Waker inputs (drawing the shapes or something like that) that lets you focus on sailing should make things a lot better.

Nintendo was trying to spread the announcement love beyond its E3 conference. Nintendo apparently forgot to bring the rest of the cool stuff for the conference itself beyond Pikmin 3.

At this point they can have a 3DS direct without announcing much of anything new at all. They have a bunch of titles announced that we've hardly seen anything of. I'd expect them to announce Miiverse and maybe even a localization of Dragon Quest when they do have one though.

neither Galaxy was another genre compared to the previous Mario's...

I mean in the freedom they had when designing the games. The games felt very unrestricted and imaginative. I think the Zelda series is far to beholden to its legacy, and if they could look at it a bit differently it might help it out.

Yep. I think it's pretty telling that the 2 megaton announcements last year - Wonderful 101 (P-100) and Fire Emblem coming to the West weren't made until after the conference was over (and Fire Emblem was revealed by mistake.)

To be fair, Fire Emblem was only just a question mark for North America. It had been announced for Europe in the April Direct last year already.

I think the most ridicilus "legacy moment" in Skyward Sword was the cutscene where link gets his harp. It would have been a pretty good cutscene if it wasnt for the item get tune and interuption notification. Wtf,

You know, at this point I'd rather they stopped announcing games for 3DS until Fall, I'm drowning here.

Sony asks you to take on multiple jobs, for Nintendo you have to quit everything you're doing or else you won't have time to play all those games! lol

Sony is helping kill my free time too, what with Puppeteer, Rain and Tearaway coming Q3/Q4. And Plus. Aaaaaargh.

EDIT: No, seriously, look at my list. This looks like heaven and hell at the same time to me.
