This seems like the really big difference between this and Steam. People have had access to their Steam games for almost 10 years now on a nearly continuous basis. Probably Steam isn't going to shut down in the next 10 years either. Even if it does it's a whole lot easier to keep playing your games.

All of this really doesn't sound like a huge deal to me, but I can't imagine why I'd prefer an XB with MS-managed distribution to a PC with Steam and the option to go with other digital retailers.

So basically Microsoft will lose their dominance in Brazil (they have about 80% of the "official" market share) and emerging markets because of this 24h online requirement. Unreliable Internet connectivity is a common problem and I can only see this as something to make the costumer's lives more complicated. Now let's see what PS4 has to offer.

-You can still trade a game to a friend. Once it's theirs, who cares what happens to it next. And there will still be avenues to sell your games. Amazon, gamestop, CeX... they'll all be there.

-Sharing all your games among 10 people = amazing. I can see 10 of my gaming friends and I working out a system of who buys what. That's 9 less games we each have to buy. Makes up for the lack of trade-in.

Just when I had started to convince myself that maybe, just maybe all the rumors we had heard about both consoles could be false, or half-truths.... THIS gets announced. Goddamn it. And you know Sony is going to do the same goddamn thing. Shit. Shit shit shit.

This is going to be the worst E3 ever.

This is the first E3 that I'm going into with a sense of dread instead of feeling like a kid going to Dinseyworld. Siiiiigh.
 
I kind of get the impression that after the XBox One reveal, MS sat back and came up with this solution. Test the waters at the reveal, then offer something that looks better than what was initially presented, while also keeping the handcuffs on.

E3 is going to be really, really interesting. I do hope MS is grilled for these decisions.

Not talking out of their ass at all. If oh, say, EA builds a phone-home check into their next EA Sports title on PS4 it won't be the PS4 that doesn't work, it'll be EA's game.

It is becoming more and more likely that Sony is going to make it so that publishers can do the same sort of things on PS4 as were announced today for Xbox One, they're just not going to make it platform-wide/mandatory/default. On Xbox One, publishers can allow you to trade-in games if they wish, on PS4 publishers can not allow you to trade-in games if they wish. Sorta opt-in vs. opt-out if that makes any sense. Customer still gets screwed but in one scenario all of the blame can be placed on the publishers who decide to implement/enforce the anti-consumer methods. At least that is the way I see it heading.
 
Wow. Been gaming since the 2600 and Vectrex and this news really just saddens me. Anger will come later but just the initial shock at how brazen MS is being at fucking us over is just...damn.

I doubt it. DRM never got struck down on music before the labels voluntarily ditched it.

DRM hasn't gotten struck down on eBooks on Kindle or Nook--current law suit is just about price fixing.

DRM hasn't gotten struck down on computer software or games.

DRM hasn't gotten struck down on digital movies.

First sale laws just haven't been applied to digital content. The courts have ruled that selling licenses rather than the content/disc is fine as the consumers are agreeing to a Terms of Service by purchasing and registering the content etc.

I don't like it at all. But that's how it stands in the US and it's unlikely console games will be something that change the courts stance on the issue.

I think we're heading to a fully digital world for these types of content where we eventually just pay for the right to access things, rather than to own copies of them. If the price is right, I personally don't mind. But the price has to be right (i.e. lower than physical goods) since I can't sell it to recoup some costs.

This actually sounds awesome! In fact it's too lenient. And I heard that the upcoming game from Respawn Entertainment, the new company founded by the creators of Call of Duty, will be exclusive for the Xbox One. I can't wait to join "Generation One".
 
MS, and by the looks of it, the publishers, really want to transform gaming to a subscription based model. If the industry really is heading in this direction then I want companies to adopt F2P model.
 
When little Jimmy plays Call of Duty and calls someone some bad words and gets banned, and thus no longer can access his account and play any of his games anymore, even single player games, Microsoft is gonna get a lot of angry phone calls from Mom and Dad.

Amazon already institutes such a policy for listing/ selling new release videogames and blu rays. I'm assuming this is because of the publisher/studio said so. Such anti-consumer bullshit.

Quoted for the truth. The mandatory Kinect sours the milk for me alone. Hell, I would not give a shit if it was just packed in, but was still optional. However, the fact that you cannot even use the system period unless it is connected is just absurd. I mean, I cannot even begin to fathom the arrogance that is required for this level of thinking. I don't even want to try. My common sense back here down on Earth simply will not allow it.
 
It really feels that Microsoft is writing all its PR for its corporate partners rather than gamers or even users of their product. It's like being ignored by two people having a conversation about you. Disappointing.
