Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

Holy shit. It's hard to believe this is serious. I can't remember the last time I saw anything so pedantic and petty. It's a strong bet the DRM was even more all-encompassing to start with, only for these abysmal, meaningless 'concessions' to sneak in to try and contain the blacklash (not that it'll matter once Halo comes out). The most tragic part is all those idiots saying 'hey, that's not so bad, at least I can do [so and so]', as though all those things weren't already possible on current gen and without restrictions. I don't normally like passing judgment on people who make different choices to me, but if you buy this, you are a cretin. There is no other way of looking at it. You are endorsing the worst kind of anti-consumer, anti-privacy measures and I hope the damn thing blows up in your face for making gaming that much less friendly.

Sony will probably have some form of DRM in place, but it's hard to believe it will be anywhere near this pathetic. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as, of the three console manufacturers, they've tended to show their customers the most respect, even when occasionally getting things wrong.

Just canceled my Xbox Live account of over 10 years. I guess i was part of the problem for paying for it but i enjoyed the service early on and just kept paying etc. They gone too far though, and i wont be getting the next xbox. And i have like, 100+ 360 games. Thats a lot of sales they are losing that Valve and Sony will now be getting. (If Sony has the same DRM, they just better be thanking the gods they have Naughty Dog)

this was me after the console reveal. I can always get in later if this shit goes away or they have some fucking generation defining games.

otherwise have fun everyone else.

MS is really making me not really care about their console. I haven't had cable TV for 7 years or a gold subscription for like 5 years. And now all this.

At least in a decade I'll be able to run Windows XP as a virtual machine and play my old ass PC games.

What horrible, horrible fucking news. I will not give them a single dollar for that piece of junk. It is my sincere hope that none of you do either. Pass AznKnight's image online so people become aware.

Shared this on our Facebook page and on our Twitter. I hope people get the picture.

I'm actually going to step out for a little bit and see if I can interview people outside of the local GameStop (teehee, being sneaky) to see what they think of this. This should be an interesting conversation.

This is the most complicated way to resolve this issue I've seen.

Honestly, I don't really mind having the games permanently registered to your account (thanks to Steam) but the way they are handling this is one hell of a clusterfuck.

And hey, at least Steam lets you play offline indefinitely. Having a 24 hour check in won't help those in the military, or the ones stuck in countries with a download/upload limit on their ISPs.

Awesome I say. As a person who lives in the real world with internet(were all on gaf right?) I don't mind any of these.

Your post history is very clear on this.

Why does no one bring up the massive positive I see from always online and no used games. Publisher money. Gamestop gives no money to anyone from used games. Microsoft is going to cut gamestop out of the picture which I'm totally fine with. More money for Microsoft, more money for people that make games on 720 over ps4.

I definitely support the endeavor, but I am too tapped out to be able to front end another topic. I'm currently swapping between two major ones (E3 Summary and NeoGAF Rumour Tracker) and periodically adding to my Xbox One debacle list.

Gotcha. I'll lead the charge if you'd like.

Given how incredibly business friendly our governments and courts are right now, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Maybe in the EU.
The problem with the EU is that these lawyers don't work for free. And if they do make a case in Germany for instance Microsoft will just hide behind Ireland or whoever and say they run their Xbox operations from there. It just doesn't seem like there are enough laws written to govern ownership in the digital age, the market is moving faster than the laws. It's just a mess, I don't know much about it but I wouldn't hold your breath on MS being taken to court over this.

now I worry that there will be some awesome announcement at E3 from MS that will make me start rationalizing why all of this is not a big deal and I should still buy an XBONE... if it comes to that what is the best flavor of MS Kool-Aid? Ballmer Berry Blast, Kinect Kiwi or Mattrick Mango?

I really don't think people outside of message boards care. Not minimizing anyone's opinion, but I just don't think most care. I think people love gaming so much, they will just adjust.

I thought this too, but after talking to a few people, including my uninformed brother who thought that the Dreamcast 2 was real last week and is the BIGGEST MS fanboy ever, it seems that the general consensus is that the Xbox One is terrible.

I remember thinking that the PS3 uproar was just message board nerds like us, but look at what happened to them at the start of this gen after the most successful console of all time!

Anecdotal? The proof is in the pudding. Despite all the amazing exclusive games, customer friendly policies, an online service that provides excellent value, and a weak yen that helped its causes, their margins on that business are pathetically low.

They could invest in US Treasury debt and do better. A billion a year in subscriptions would surely help...

It's not anecdotal. It's a hypothesis.

Thats not what I was getting at
This assumption that they will is anecdotal evidence
Im sure they get a "couple" million with plus

So it's not as bad as the worst case scenario, but still bad.

It'd take quite a good game to get me to buy an Xbox One at this point...

It actually already happened during Microsoft's last presentation a few weeks ago. There as a Kotaku article about it. Whenever the guy on stage kept saying it, it shut everyone's systems off with Kinect 1 who were watching it on their Xboxes.

I meant the Kinect 2 can recognize it now. The Kinect 1 isn't that advanced and couldn't do it.

Loving the matter of fact posting of this news on IGN, Poygon, and Joystiq.

Wouldn't want to say anything negative about a sudden rewriting of the rules of game ownership as we've known it for decades now.

Are you guys extending the boycott to the big 3rd party publishers (Activision, EA and Ubisoft). Seems like they are getting what they asking for with Xbox One.

They make a distinction between that and the family stuff.

You're right. Didn't read that part, however they implement it I imagine there are some sort of additional hoops to jump through in order to prove the family connection. Considering how locked down loaning games to friends and used games are, there's little possibility that this is some type of loophole.

Make your case. Actually try to answer counter points and don't just go : "You are all idiots, digital is the future, Microsoft are smart." and you won't get banned.

Also, don't be a viral marketer for a PR company. That also helps.

The argument for me is: I don't trade in games, so the only thing that's changed for me here is I can apparently share a library with friends. We'll wait and see how that's implemented exactly, but on the surface my response to this article was "wow that's a freebie" rather than outrage. I'm treating Xbox One as basically Steam, and I already like Steam so...

I mean, I get the counter argument, but I don't quite get how it's so unanimous one way than the other.

That just sucks. As a current Xbox 360 owner I was looking forward to carrying over my account and everything to the next gen. I guess I will be starting fresh with the PS4 instead.

I'm glad they clarified and gave a good, solid answer.

Now I know for sure I'm not getting an XBox One. Thanks for the memories Microsoft, the 360 was a great machine and I loved XBLA, but the time has come for me and you to part ways. Farewell, and I wish you the worst of luck in your future endeavors.

There is a difference between a 99 cent game on IOS and a $60(or more?) game on Xbone. There is a reason why Gamestop is making billions each year. Hardcore are early adopters of systems and usually bring their friends along after telling them how great the system is. If the hardcore won't buy it the casuals won't either.

I don't really see the price being an issue. People will just accept that it's "how it is" people don't care as much about this shit as a lot of enthusiast do.

Most people with a system that I know buy a couple games a year and it's not because a hardcore dude told them about it.

So they can keep buying their couple games a year and having fun with them, and nothing will really change.

You were saying people who play on iPhones/iPads would be used to it and fine with unable to sell/share games. Physical products have different expectations that digital ones. That's what I was trying to imply.

The way I'm seeing this, these physical products are basically like buying an activation code for a digital product

I have around 160~180, and another poster said he had 300. Both of us said we're never getting a Xbox One. This is real money Microsoft is losing, money they are not just going to make up with new customers.

Of course.

Was just saying that it hasn't been applied in the US yet. We have no right to resell our e-books, software etc.

That EU ruling changes things over there, and hopefully things change here too.

But honestly, that wouldn't affect this since you can resell your digital games--just to authorized retailers.

So for that to go away there would have to be another court ruling even in the EU that said that wasn't good enough and that they had to allow for unlimited license transfers.

Which is really the way digital goods should work. Tie the license to an account, but give people full power to deactivate their license (and lose their access to the content) and transfer it to another user.

I think we'll get there. Just going to be lots of growing pains as we slowly move away from physical media and into a fully digital world.
I don't see how Microsoft can even sell the xbone in the EU with this policy honestly.

**Reads site ... smiles**

Honestly, Microsoft was going to have a tough time selling me an Xbox One before I even knew how it would handle used games. It would have needed to retail for less than $250. It would have needed to be free of any complaints regarding its build quality for the first couple of years. Finally, it would have needed to have some games -- not the interactive movie, watered down, hand-holding variety (those aren't games) -- that I wanted to purchase.

Now, I don't have to worry about any of that. No XBox one for me. I'm now waiting for Sony to screw up in a similar manner.

**Hugs huge backlog and slips it the tongue**

Finally a game console that has to check in on me every day to make sure what I'm playing is okay. I just hope Kinect doesn't tell my mommy that I'm playing games past my bedtime. Maybe Kinect will also check my nutrition and prevent me from playing games unless I've had an acceptable amount of fruits and veggies for the day.

How does Ballmer like his blowjobs?

As someone who's never had internet problems, I totally agree that for my experience it's better. It's too bad that we aren't in a place technologically where everyone can be always online though, and game publishers and console makers are ignoring that fact.

Guys, there's no fucking way MS is going to let 1 game be shared between a group of 10 people. There has to be some sort of catch there. These policies show they want $$$$$$$$ and letting 10 friends share one game would kill sales. Even if only 1 of the 10 is able to play at a time. Can't see this happening.
There's obviously going to be some sort of catch. Either some sort of exorbitant Live Platinum or severe restriction.

Also, is there now enough information that you'll stop saying that people are reacting to incomplete information. All the things people were reacting to, restriction of private sale, renting, lending and even giving away (to a single time) and a 24 hour check-in DRM have all come to pass, as expected, based on this PR.

This almost guarantees Sony will do something similar.

If it's up to the game publishers to set up their transfer fees for used games with retailers, and Sony does not restrict used games, Microsoft may get more exclusives (because the publishers can make money on used game sales on Xbone, but not PS4). Sony will probably not stand for that.

Yes indeed. Okay, so there is no required check in everyday and the Eye does not have to be connected, but the used games policies remain. The PS4 has been all rays of sunshine so far, but this is going to happen at least with certain games, folks. Hey, I want one as much anyone else, but reality remains.

I really don't understand why gaming websites aren't up in arms about this.
Microsoft are bending the industry to their will and they're just laying down and taking it.

Having a hard time getting worked up about any of this, save for the lack of rental support. Unless Microsoft and their "partners" can come up with a solution for that, I may be looking elsewhere to fill my next-gen needs.

so, am I crazy or does Sony going out of their way to court dev studios and indies sound like it could be so they have a backup if a few big publishers don't support their console for not having the same type of licensing rules as the xbone?

edit: IF sony doesn't go the same route as ms
