Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

I'd be much less inclined to buy a $60 game if I had more limited options for dispensing of it when I'm done

You just talked yourself out of a sale, Microsoft

These info dumps are seriously a master class in corporate PR horseshit.

We've enabled publishers to allow trade-ins/used sales/simple lending to friends. No thanks, Microsoft. How about I enable you to lick my taint?

I truly have zero intention of buying one of these machines. I'm concerned, though, that Microsoft has simply poured money into exclusive games for it.

Only if:

1. Sony has pretty much the same polices in place.

2. Sony has fewer exclusives that interest me.

Number 1 is fairly likely I expect, unfortunately. Number 2 problem not because the Sony/MS exclusives are pretty much a wash to me in terms of how many I like on each platform. Maybe Sony getting a small edge as some of their exclusive devs like Naughty Dog do more in terms of introducing new franchises like The Last of Us rather than only sequels.

If both consoles have this DRM crap, I'll probably just deal with it. I don't like it on principle, but really it doesn't affect me and how I game much in practice--I just hate the principle of it. But at the same time, I have no qualms about DRM locked e-books, iphone/ipad apps, computer software etc.--so I guess I've already tossed aside that principle anyway--just not for console games yet.

But I like gaming, hate PC gaming and have no interest in a Wii U. I can keep myself busy with the PS3/360/3DS combo I have now for a couple years--and that's what I'll probably do if both have this DRM. That way I can hope it blows up in their faces and they make changes by the time I buy. If not, I'll probably just somewhat reluctantly pick which ever has the most games I want to play when my backlog of current gen stuff is exhausted.

Keep in mind that, in general, GAF seems to lean heavily towards SONY. That is fine, and all, because I plan on buying both consoles day one. I see this huge anti-Xbox/Microsoft groundswell as just another GAF convulsion whenever there is "new generation" event. The same shit went down when the PS3 / Xbox 360 were released.

They don't record your conversations, but they sure do count the number of times you say a keyword.

They were very careful the explicitly and only say "record".

Now be aware of Microsoft strategy:

1- This info was released today because they don't want to ruin their E3 with it. Also, the dust is having some time to fall back on the ground.

2- They will stay nebulous about this during E3 and really focusing on games, so it can soften your mind and appease people.

3- Without meetings after the show, they will keep this whole thing in check and hope people just stop caring and forget.

Now its all about us not letting this happen!!

Now I just feel bad for Speedy Blue Dude, he was just some kid who just said some dumb things. Apparently he got wiped with the Junior cull even though he wasn't a junior.

I don't really see the price being an issue. People will just accept that it's "how it is" people don't care as much about this shit as a lot of enthusiast do.

Most people with a system that I know buy a couple games a year and it's not because a hardcore dude told them about it.

So they can keep buying their couple games a year and having fun with them, and nothing will really change.

The way I'm seeing this, these physical products are basically like buying an activation code for a digital product

What couple of games do they buy a year? Online fps? Hardcore won't buy it so there won't be as large of an online community to play with. The bigger online community will be on PS4 if they allow lending/no online. How does he decide which games to buy each year? By borrowing a friend's game? Can't do that. By renting a game? Can't do that. By reading reviews? The reviews will all say the PS4 version is better if it is multiplatform. What is going to make your friends get a Xbox One?

There's obviously going to be some sort of catch. Either some sort of exorbitant Live Platinum or severe restriction.

Also, is there now enough information that you'll stop saying that people are reacting to incomplete information. All the things people were reacting to, restriction of private sale, renting, lending and even giving away (to a single time) and a 24 hour check-in DRM have all come to pass, as expected, based on this PR.

Definitely. I was taking a wait and see approach and unfortunately Microsoft let me down. I'm pretty disappointed as I loved the 360. Not good to push your existing customers away. I'm definitely leaning toward the PS4 right now.

I really don't understand why gaming websites aren't up in arms about this.
Microsoft are bending the industry to their will and they're just laying down and taking it.
The gaming press would rather be complicit in fostering a console gaming crash in North America than do anything to inform their readers about it. The entire system is broken due to the fact they are dependent upon game publishers, free games and ad revenue to survive. They have NO WILL OF THEIR OWN! They are just extensions of PR.

You're far better off going to the non-gaming tech press on these issues. Everyone else has been bought.

PS4 it is then. Whoever does buy the One, do not leave your consoles on standby when you're not playing. That is your governments plan. Good luck.

As someone who has a reliable Internet connection and doesn't purchase used games/borrow games, nothing announced here is really troublesome for me. Having said that, I can totally see why someone would refuse to buy this system. If you have shoddy internet, or heavily rely on used games, then it absolutely makes zero sense to buy this system. I personally lack the moral conviction to protest a console for reasons that don't personally effect me. It's definitely a selfish position, but In a choice between ideals and personal gaming, the latter is going to win every time. Having said that, I think some of these decisions by Microsoft are extremely stupid and definitely going to have a tangible effect on the momentum of their brand.

Just hope you don't get a ban for a BS reason like playing a game before street date you legally purchased from a store. Since a ban = you lose your entire game library. I think that is very serious you can lose 100's or 1000's of dollars of games at any time.

Good god this thread is moving fast.

This all feels really bad, man. Just a fucking bummer. You just know Sony is going to have kind of DRM policy announced next week but ... it can't be this bad, right?

What horrible, horrible fucking news. I will not give them a single dollar for that piece of junk. It is my sincere hope that none of you do either. Pass AznKnight's image online so people become aware.

Picture saved. Although, it should mention that you will get less trade in credit because Microsoft takes a cut.

Boycotted so hard. I did the same for the 360 for paid online, boycotting the One will be a total non-issue.

Everyone who plans to boycott, sign it, and then we can see how many of them end up posting Forza 5 impressions come November.

Consoles cost a little more than a single game, and then you need to keep dumping money into them so you actually have something to play. It won't be hard to pass on this turd.

You're not crazy.

Sony will likely have something added onto what they have this gen, but it's not going to be anywhere near what MS just unleashed. And EA is already punishing them for it by going to MS with exclusives.

But if the console sales of the ps4 are higher than the X1... they will all put their tails between their legs and come back full force.

But what sells more:
- no drm consoles
Or
- consoles with 3rd party exclusives (or at least major exclusive content)

we dont know. There is one no drm console on the market. People seem not to care (argument is "lack of power"?)

I have around 160~180, and another poster said he had 300. Both of us said we're never getting a Xbox One. This is real money Microsoft is losing, money they are not just going to make up with new customers.

I have over 250 360 games as well and 3 xbox 360 consoles currently and was one of the early adopters for the family plan. I definitely won't be buying into this BS. If they are going to adopt the Steam approach I would much rather just spend my money to upgrade my kids PCs to be full on gaming PCs.

Shared this on our Facebook page and on our Twitter. I hope people get the picture.

I'm actually going to step out for a little bit and see if I can interview people outside of the local GameStop (teehee, being sneaky) to see what they think of this. This should be an interesting conversation.

If I wasn't actively avoiding TLoU spoilers, I'd do it myself.

Below is a link for an existing post with the picture (not made by me so i am not grasping for karma), anyone with a reddit account please up vote.

The picture gets the point across perfectly and we could really reach out this way.

No private sales and not all games able to be traded in is worse than I thought. I actually got pretty excited about the Xbone after reading about Titanfall today but now I am firmly back in the not buying camp.

You won't be playing a game before street date because the system will NOT let you.

I hope it isn't. If it is, I have no problems sticking to PC/handhelds.

Persona 5 for Vita pls.

edit: Maybe Wii U as well. Maybe...

When I sign in i sign in on Live the the internet connection does not bother me. The used game thing is a little wild, but I guess i will just make my friends my family members and they can play my entire library from thier house. :)

None of that is even an issue for me.

Console still looks good and I am really looking forward to it as long as the games come along. Titan could be cool, Forza looks great, and Halo is always going to be there. Sony just doesn't have the exclusives IMO.

I guess I can see the outrage from y'all if you are really into trading games and selling them, but I just don't do that. I buy them and keep them. I very rarely rent games and even more rare than that is the occasion that I borrow one from a buddy or give them one of my own. I think this entire generation I traded in 4-5 games and loaned one to a friend once.

The stuff a lot of gaf is mad about is simply a non-issue for me.
