Basic online play is still free AFAIK.
Good to read. That's the tipping point afaic.

ruffling any feathers

Please, no need to apologize. On the contrary, thank you for sharing. Much appreciated, as always.

Online play better not be behind a paywall or Netflix for that matter or else I think I may be done with console gaming. Gaming has already been slowing down for me, but this would just be the nail in the coffin. The way it's mentioned that publishers decide DRM Sony's first party games also better not have DRM or else that would be the end for me as well. I don't resell my games but do let my friends borrow when I'm done as they're all broke.

It's sad that instead of just "Day 1" console purchase I have to sit around till after release to see if I want to jump in or not. I don't trust PR speak when telling me what I can and cannot do as PR can be pretty shady.

Lame.

I'm already a plus member so if sony includes online play behind it, for me it's not really an issue. However i expect sony to deliver a Live like experience, because PSN right now sucks.

That Kotaku article (and its pricing) is still stating the camera will be packed-in with every PS4, something that doesn't seem so likely anymore.

Its pretty badly out of date, and given the take-up rate Sony has been enjoying with PS+ I'm really not sure if locking off online play would leverage their pay services any better than what they are doing currently.

BTW Folks, please, this is not coming from me - I heard this AFTER Kotaku and Kotaku has been right on this info all along, so please re read the link:

http://kotaku.com/5985356/source-th...d-youll-be-able-to-control-it-with-your-phone

and I hope I am wrong, and I do apologize if I'm ruffling any feathers, I don't mean to cause trouble.

That really depend what "most" is defined as.

A tiered structure of:
Free - Online play, secondary media services Sony isn't providing (like Netflix, Hulu, etc.), chat

Pay Tier 1 - Cloud game saves, PS+ instant game catalog, maybe Sony video collection services?

Pay Tier 2 - Gaikai services

Would make complete sense to me. Forcing a minimum payment for online play is unacceptable.

I'm even ok with them letting publishers do as they see fit with always online as long as Sony isn't providing the infrastructure or doing it themselves. It's EA's choice if they want to antagonize their customers, we'll just not buy their games. But make them stand on their own with it, don't suck everyone into a universal system like Microsoft. Then publishers will learn quickly the negative ramifications of their DRM choices.

But if you want pay 2 play online, Netflix, etc. I'm done, and I've been a PS+ subscriber for years. Its the principle of the thing.

Kotaku doesn't know about PlayStation World prices and they only said that most features would be locked behind a paywall. Online play was said to be free in the very first rumour about PS World and I really doubt Sony will change that.

Still sucks we need to be on a roller coaster of emotions with this ominous dark cloud over what's supposed to be the best gaming time of the year.

Yup this makes the most since to me. Otherwise Sony would have to charge Vita players for online play as well. And they are definitely not going to to that.

What if it's something like this :

* Basic online play - (Free)

* Basic online play AND cross game chat + (video)streaming - (30 a year)

etc...

Based on what Kagari is saying I think it will probably end up like this:

399$/499$ SKUs (premium model with camera and bigger hard drive).
Basic online functionalities still free.
Plus (now including many new extra features like cross game chat, video recording, etc) at 60$
Plus+ Gaikai streaming for 90$

Crisis averted! Hopefully lol. Would not make sense for them to charge for regular online play anyway. Massive selling point for Sony.
