Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

Presenting: Catnip Mario!

:D

i loved 3d land's cross between 2d and 3d, so this looked fun and so pretty

however i was hoping for something that really blew me away from a conceptual level like the galaxy games did. it's still going to have incredible level design of course, it just doesn't look like a gamechanger.

Seriously, Super Mario 3D Land was definitely the weakest Super Mario game since Super Mario Galaxy for me, so I'm not as hyped for this.
Really disappointing.

Woah, they're using the SMB3 death music this time. :D

Also the scope of this game looks much larger than Mario 3D Land. Not as big as the Galaxy titles, but still.

looks a backwards step to me from Galaxy...not impressed visually or gameplay wise.

I think the bolded is my problem in a nutshell. It looks good, and fun, but definitely seems to be a step down from Galaxy. I would be very surprised if I enjoyed this as much as Galaxy.

There is way too much critical judgment of this game based on only a couple minutes of gameplay. It looks pretty interesting to me, and I don't even like cats. People want Ninteneo to fail because they hate their inner children.

Yeah, that must be it.
Not that I find some things in the game bland and the music atrocious.
Not that its dissapointing after Mario galaxy.

Must be the I want to see Nintendo fail.

For your info, I love Nintendo, love the SMB2 multiplayer, love the cat suit, and even love the 2D art of hud, and find some other details really good, like the promising Bowser Circus stage, and the game will probably be amazingly great and fun to play. But that doesnt take that some things in this game look bland as hell and that is a big dissapointment.

I think this is a good direction for Mario 3D. A nice evolution to Super Mario 3D Land.
It's the best compromise for casual and hardcore gamers.
I still see a lot of creativity in the level design. The Cat power-up looks extremely fun.

I think this was/is a rush job. The models and the artsyle look very simple. Nintendo realised they had to get the game out soon to save the Wii U. So they took the safest route by reusing the themes and art style from the 3DS release.

This looks gorgeous, I'll give Nintendo this - the Mario games (this, Kart) both look stunning. And from watching the gameplay videos they look to play just as good as they look.

I think the game looks interesting, and fun. In fact I think the system should have launched and been packaged with this. What should have been shown was the flagship Mario title meant to showcase what they system can really do.

Multiplayer is really not what I wanted out of the next 3D Mario, and to implement it with no online makes even less sense. I was hoping for something new, not an extension of an existing game.

Isn't the "3D" in 3D land because the 3DS displays in 3D? I guess the chances of this having 3DTV support are laughable.

Not happy! :(

This should be a 3ds game. No question. The reason 3D Land was so good was because it was so well tuned for a portable console. Ugh...

They started thinking about Mario 3D World while they were still developing Mario 3D Land. It was planned this way.

I was disappointed when I saw the trailer but then my girlfriend saw it and is in love. Mostly for Cat Mario, I think.

Welp, guess Nintendo knows what it's doing...

Point 2 is absolutely incorrect. People were hyped just from the Tanooki tail and the fact that EAD Tokyo was making a 3D Mario for the system.

Uh, not on GAF. People thought it looked boring and safe and graphically sub-par. Many thought it would be a mediocre game.

Point 3, what do you mean? I mean, it's HD and Galaxy isn't but artstyle, music and gameplay look like a significant downgrade

Art-style is *different* but I like the slightly flatter shading style and the brighter colors. "HD" is just a resolution. The lighting, textures, and geometry are far superior to Galaxy and overall it's a far more technically pleasing aesthetic. It is significantly better looking than Galaxy in Dolphin.

Music seemed a bit meh, but we'll see. I wasn't a huge fan of 3D Land's music anyway.

We were fortunate to get a question in with the game's directors (via the super official Chad Concelmo!), and of course, I was interested in the game's audio. They were able to confirm the return of series composer Koji Kondo and recent-addition Mahito Yokota (Super Mario Galaxy) for the game's soundtrack. When asked about the possibility of live orchestral recordings (which were featured in Galaxy), we got some whispering, a wink, and a coy, "Wait for more information about that soon."

How?

Do we even know the scale of this game, where it takes place.

The levels.

How much do we know to honestly make that assessment.

Though... Dat timer...

They started thinking about Mario 3D World while they were still developing Mario 3D Land. It was planned this way.

Sadly I dont think 3D land needed a big sequel, even If I loved the game. I dont know what they were thinking, probably not wanting to think to much it seems.

So they are going to change the whole sondtrack of the trailer? Because thats sure as hell doesnt sound as Mahito.

This seemed like a logical (yet boring) step for 3D Mario games. Super Mario 3D Land sold really really well in both territories and was a very nice blend of 2D and 3D mario. Building uopn that and adding multiplayer to the formula will result in a great (but safe) 3D Mario. I personally thought 3D Mario Land was just as good (if not better) then the Galaxy games so I'm excited to play this but at the same time disappointed with SM3DW not feeling "new".

I loved 3D Land and this one is more than it on steroïds. 4p 3D Mario is an enormous plus for me, and cat Mario is the best suit ever. I saw 4 gameplay videos and I want this christmas game already.

I think this will be a great game, I thought people would know to trust Nintendo with creating awesome games. I think people were just very set on getting a Galaxy game for some reason.

The visuals are very nice, very clean and crisp, not sure why that's getting hate also.

Complete underwhelmed like most when I first saw this revealed. Then I assumed that this is the console counterpart to the 3DS game just like how New Super Mario Bros. DS/portable is to New Super Mario Bros Wii/console. Galaxy and the "New" Super Mario games coincided with each other on their last platform so I see no reason why we won't get that next "Galaxy" game for Wii U in the future.

Just a shame that they seem to be playing it safe at the moment when the system is in dire need for a first party title (or really any game for that matter) that WOWs. Maybe Nintendo just doesn't have a vision for what succeeds Galaxy. I wouldn't know what the fuck to do either, despite personally wanting something along the lines of Mario 64 in HD. The director said that this Wii U game is their best effort/culmination of everything they've learned from making 3D Mario titles, but it looks pretty fucking similar to the 3DS game in terms of scope.
I'm still going to pick this up because I loved 3D Land, but I can't say I didn't walk away a little disappointed. Here's hoping we see the true Mario game next e3! =/

The most disappointing thing about this is that it's not free roam and there's still a timer.
why does 3D Mario need to be free roam? the series has always excelled with its focused and tight level design.

the problem with this game is there seems to be a lot of empty space because of 4P multiplayer. i hope that won't be the case for the rest of it, but it seems to be the "thing" for this game...

Absolutely adored everything about 3D Land, but really would've wished this as a 3DS sequel rather than have it go to the console. Come up with something innovative, visually impressive, and grand in scope for my home console experience, Nintendo!

Wasted opportunity. And while I still want to play this game I don't feel it's enough to warrant the purchase of the system just yet. Will not buy until the price cut comes or until the release of Smash Bros. Whichever comes first, I suppose.

Much like Zelda, there is no consensus over what the "correct" direction for 3D Mario is. I can understand being disappointed if your favorite concept isn't what a new game is built around.

But when 3D Land came out, it became clear fast even in a place like GAF that there was a very large number of players not being served by Mario Galaxy - no matter how much Galaxy is worshiped.

Plenty of people want a new Mario 64. Plenty want Galaxy. Plenty wanted what 3D Land was, which is to take 2D Mario and figure out a great balance of 2D and 3D concepts.

If anything I suspect there's great potential in 3D World due to refinement - 3D Land is a bit like NSMB DS. Too timid, too easy, too restrained. Then the Wii version of NSMB went all-in as a 2D platformer and everything clicked. Would not be surprised at all if the jump from 3D Land to 3D World is as dramatic as that. The stages already seen are better than most of what's in 3D Land.

3D Land was fantastic. High hopes. Still want my Galaxy 3 though :P! Next year I await a double whammy of ZeldaU and MarioU

When I say a step back, I mean it looks less engaging, less fun. It doesn't transport and inspire me in the same way.

Not to say that it doesn't look fun. I think it does. And if the game is tuned for single-player, with a huge number of levels, and tons of variety in gameplay, it might win me over even more,

But at first glance... You show me this game, and you show me Galaxy.. I would pick Galaxy every time.

Nintendo cares too much about tight platforming in a Mario game to throw online in there. Not that they now what online is anyway, but still.

Fuck the haters. Mario 3D Land was great and this will be too. Plus, I bet it'll move some systems, especially people not in the GAF circle.

I sort of regret getting a WiiU before this E3 now. I basically thought there was a 0% chance they could disappoint me with 3D Mario and that the "secret" Retro title would make the console worth a purchase. I still like the WiiU, but I could have just got one in 2014 or 2015.
