Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

I wonder what the reactions would be if this were announced first, and then Mario 3D Land was the follow-up, instead of vice-versa?

Also, people pointing out that the mainline Mario titles always ushered in a new form of gameplay, this one does too: there's never been a 4-player 3D Mario title before. It might not be the gameplay revolution you personally wanted from the Mario series, but that doesn't keep it from being one.

Watching the developer vid. It looks so laidback.

I love this.

I used to love games like Halo but they gave me too much anxiety. Contrary to popular belief, violent video games don't allow players to vent their aggression. Instead, people who play violent video games or games that are very frenetic in pace often maintain a high level of anxiety throughout. It doesn't have a calming effect.

But this Mario game - the environments, the music - it's just so soothing and nice.

For me, the special levels in 3D land were way harder than anything in either Galaxy game. Just the lack of the waggle jump makes things harder. I'll take more of that. Of course this game will have Peach for cheat mode.

Actually now that I think of it that's a really good idea and will allow them to ramp up the difficulty. Easily frustrated players can use Peach, people looking for a challenge can use Mario or Toad. With the waggle jump, none of the platforming in Galaxy was ever hard. But knowing that Peach is available to those who need it will hopefully give them the license to make it hard.

Local multiplayer provides better experiences something something. Last time I complained about this in a Mario thread I was told to get some friends :(

It's a valid stance, I wouldn't be offended by it if it was being parroted by a small company with no resources, but when you're a gigantic multi-billion dollar company, you can afford to do both.

I loved local multi when I was younger, but those days are gone, and now if I want to enjoy multi I need the internet. This befuddles children, because, well, unless you're a total social introvert, it's very easy to make friends as a kid. As an adult with a job, responsibilities, etc and into such a narrow, poorly perceived hobby? Shit be hard, yo.

I think a lot of us had high hopes for something very ambitious, which this game doesn't appear to be.

If this looked good I would have bought a Wii U the day Wonderful 101 came out. Now I'm having a real tough time justifying buying the thing. I can understand someone saying their whole purchase decision was hinging on this game. Mario 64 was enough to justify people buying an N64 and this game had the same persuasive potential, just largely fell short.

If I didn't have a Wii U, I would definitely buy it for this game. No, it's not as impactful as 64, but no other game in history has been. For me, the Wii and Wii U are systems to play with friends, and this looks like one of the best multiplayer games to come out in years.

Me three. While the game could look better I have no problem there. But why do they feel the need to stick to 3D Land style songs? They don't necessarily need to orchestrate it, it just doesn't seem to fit the game and seems kind of lethargic compared to 3D Land.

They need to liven it up. There's just something about a good Mario track that just clicks with you instantly. They should try and go for the style of music of the NES trilogy or World but with modern sound, I think any of those types of songs could fit the game great.

Looks great, but not sure I'm digging the catsuit power up. Playable Peach is awesome though.

People are seriously expecting a SMG type game to be released so early on? We probably won't get anything like that until 2015.

Seems that way. A fusion of World's enemies, SMB 2 and 3D land mechanics, along with some new stuff.

It could of been interesting to be able to swap characters like in Lost Vikings or Trine to take into account the specificity of each characters into the level design.

Another reason this game isn't as impressive as 3D Land is because of the 3D effect implemented in the 3DS. It totally complements the gameplay.

Sarcasm? If not, what looks terrible about it?
The art design is so uninspired and bland it's almost painful to look at. After waiting years for an HD 3d Mario, we get this? It looks so cut and paste with upezzed textures from a 3ds game. Where is the ambition we used to see?

If I still had real life people I gamed with, I would probably be more into this. I play games with other people maybe 5 times a year, tops.

Games that are designed around multiplayer are never much fun to play solo and I don't expect this to be any different. That and the fact that the art design looks kinda NSMB-ified instead of actually new (the irony of Nintendo's use of the word "new" in their games!) and ambitious make this reveal pretty damn disappointing for me.

Although with all of my interest and praise said I am still looking more forward to Sonic Lost World I think

If Sega can nail the controls (and I currently have reservations they totally will, need to play a demo or hear a trusted impression) then I feel like Lost World will be "Mario Galaxy starring Cat Mario" which is definitely more enticing.

You read my mind.

This seems insanely conservative to me.

I miss the days when Nintendo was actually creative and took risks. The Nintendo of the past would have come up with a totally new and innovative Mario game for their new console. They would not have just made a couple of direct sequels to some games they made a few years prior and called it a day.

The SNES got Super Mario World. The N64 got Super Mario 64. Hell, even the Wii got Super Mario Galaxy. What does the Wii U get? The 4th New Super Mario Bros game, and another Mario 3D Land game. Ok, Nintendo.

I think that looks very inspired, but I understand that it's a matter of taste. I see that image and I see fun and excitement.

I wonder if this guy is based off of this enemy in Mario 2.

This actually looks considerably worse than 3D Land, so please guys stop saying "do you knowwwww how good 3D Land is????"
Yes, Ive played it and enjoyed it. But this game does not look like 3D Land. IT LOOKS SOULLESS.
Mario looks like he does in New Super Mario Bros. The levels look disgustingly bland.
I think Miyamoto has lost it.

I'm sure the levels will be good. But 3D Mario on a console should be a big event, not something that looks like Mario Party and worse than Mario Kart.
3D Land was perfect for a handheld, the visuals are however pretty underwhelming on their next gen home console. Equally, why put multiplayer into everything, there's enough Mario series for that already. Now it feels like a lazy, rushed 3D version of New Mario Bros., instead of the focused SP adventure that follows the milestones that were Mario 64 and Galaxy.

But hey, M3DLand was the best selling 3D Mario in Japan and Multiplayer already worked wonders for NSMB, so let's do the same shit on WiiU, because clearly Iwata still has no goddamn clue what to do with this thing other than quickly let his teams copy stuff that was successful on the Wii/3DS - which was all fine on each platform. When it was still fresh.

"The grand culmination of the best ideas from past 3D Mario games" - Koichi Hayashida.

I believe.

Yeah, nah. The art design looks superior to Galaxy (in that it's similar but far more detailed). Go have a look.

Let me say that this game plays great and has beautiful attention to detail. The co-op leaves room to roam and is clearly not as hectic as NSMB games (not that hectic was always bad), but they've also done good things to incentivize competition with the score tally at the end of each stage.

I also firmly believe that this is not the last we'll see of 3D mario on the WiiU. Certainly not

I heard there will be blues harmonica DLC down the road. That may give it some soul.

I don't get all of the hate. I grew up with Nintendo in the 1980's and at this point their games are still great fun. Looking forward to playing this with my nieces and having...fun.

I find it a little funny that you're using the game that was sold in japan with "Super Mario Bros 4" in the title to make this point.

To be clear, I would much prefer the Mario 64 control method but I'm really curious how 3D Land controls will translate to a home console game.

And I understand people's disappointment, I really think most will change their mind once it's out and people can play it.

Honestly if anything I feel like its a disservice to 3D Land. They took one of Nintendo's best games in years and will eventually make it tiresome like New Super Mario Bros.

The reason I got a Wii U (which arrived this week) was for for one or two glorious 3d single player platform experiences like SMG 1&2. Didn't have to be galaxy 3, infact a different setup and locale would have been preferable. What I was hoping for was the same single player focus and depth and breadth of the two galaxy games.

I guess I just stupidly assumed that Nintendo would be releasing one or two can't miss single player 3d platforming games. And they still might, but after today's e3, I'm not holding my breath. DKCR2 is retro's secret big game, bleh. And now the aesthetic and design philosophy of 3dsml is the basis for the big wii u 3d Mario game....

But even though I'm disappointed, I'm glad there are lots of people in this thread really happy about the announcements. I hope nintendo finds big success with DKCR2 and SM3DL.

I'm holding off judging the game till i get to demo it tomorrow at best buy, but for now the game at least looks fun to play but it definitely wasnt the 3d mario title i was expecting.

Who is going to Best Buy tomorrow to play this? I have gotten two whole StreetPasses in the three or four months I've owned my XL. I'm sure that will change tomorrow. I'm heading out at 4:30.

I'll take it, but I was really hoping for open world Mushroom Kingdom, I want to wake up in Toad Village, walk across town to Peach's Castle, maybe find some star behind a waterfall, go swimming and find some secret cave...I need that sense of discovery like I had in Mario 64. I like these games too but like others have said it just seems a little too cookie cutter for me, and that grand sense of scope seems missing.

My feelings exactly. This morning I was pretty much set on Wii U and PS4 for next gen because I assumed Nintendo was going to kill it today. All they killed was my interest in their console. (Dramatic hyperbole, I know, but you get the point.)

The sound and beats are simple but it feels like an extension of 3D Land's music. Simple but soothing. But 3D Land does have some really good stuff:

Super Mario 3D Land Final Boss music

Nothing in Atlanta. Nooooo :( lol

I dislike how the camera is so fixed and far from Mario to account for possible extra players. It made sense for the 3DS due to its limitations and enhancing the 3D effect, but it's boring for a full fledged 3D console title. So much of the footage looks like a side scroller because of it. You'd think they would want more separation between classic Mario gameplay and the flagship 3D installments.

Galaxy 3 would have had:

-better art direction
-an orchestrated soundtrack, no MIDI
-difficulty
-a non-isometric camera view
-creativity put into the level design

This is literally a gussed up version of 3D Land. This is not what I expected when I was hyping a 3D Mario. This is not good.

-Art direction is a subjective thing, I strongly disagree with you, but OK.
-They hinted at an orchestrated soundtrack, posted that a while back, Galaxy 2 had a MIDI soundtrack too when it was first revealed
-Judging difficulty from a few E3 levels is ridiculous
-The camera is fully controllable in single player, not isometric
-Ugh...
