Looks great, but I'm not feeling good for those who were expecting the numbered Final Fantasys to be JRPGs to perpetuity. (I'm no RPG fan so it doesn't hurt me, but I understand.) They messed around a lot with battle systems in XII and XIII (and XI and XIV are of course interesting anomalies) but this is straight-out action with stat-building. I'm curious how much they projected would have sold less if it kept the Versus name, I guess the "numbered game" phenomenon really is a factor for some game collectors but on the other hand I was interested in Versus and the only other Square game I have in my whole collection is 3rd Birthday.

Would be a fascinating turn-around, BTW, if the sequel games to Final Fantasy XV were more traditional ATB Final Fantasy JRPGs, the mirror opposite of the way they went with Lightning Returns.

Noctis link form looks just like clouds final move in AC. Also, notice how his swords and spears stick to the behemoth.

There are no QTE's, it's basically like how it was in KH2 where at a few points there's a short cinematic in battle. Like in the last Xemnas fight. I think they'll be adding more here since it's a FF game but as long as the segments are sparse and not too long it'll be OK.

There weren't any QTEs in that footage lol

exactly.I think they decided to make cutscenes more interactive instead of just looooong instances of putting your controller down. There is really nothing to worry about. I would rather play in my cutscenes than watch.Nomura talked about a "new type of cutscene" and I think that is it.

It won't undermine the entire game, hopefully.

I'm honestly going to be very impressed if everything shown in that trailer is possible in the final game. The detail in everything looked great to me. The behemoths were amazing. Especially when the last one came in and Noctis was hiding. That was very freaky.

interesting discovery

also, the information was missing from press release too. oddly enough, it has windows on it, which wasn't even mentioned in the document.

All the PC and "any DirectX 11 platform" bits are really playing with my feelings.

really...haven't you had enough female chars for an entire generation ?? Plus stella and the other girl could be amazing impactful females. You never know. Its not like people love lightning , serah , vanille and fang this gen.

Now that you mention it, that is part of what makes this game refreshing after having three major releases in a row focusing on the girls.

Technically it looks amazing. I'm still not sure how I feel about the more action-orientated approach they are taking.

This isn't Final Fantasy, its StarOcean lite, brought closer to reality in order to appeal to a broader base. Square is trying to tap into the kids that are now college students with disposable income. Children whose first RPG experiences were FF10, Kingdom Hearts, and Star Ocean 3. Pulling further away from anything that would delay the player from instant and constant gratification. Sure this game looks graphically very nice, but its all smoke and mirrors. The one off animations are happening directly after cuts, because everything is staged. How is this game any different from FF13? I see corridors, one off big cinematics, generic characters, and a fighting system that is about mashing buttons to win. This isn't a return to what final fantasy was, it is a step further away. Which to me personally is not what I had hoped FF15 would be.

Exactly.SE is the last company you could accuse of making dudebro games.I bet even versus will have a lot of attention focused on stella. She seems like a key character in every trailer.

Wait, does that mean that it was planned for PS4/PC originally and then Xbox One later?

More like it was planned for PS4 then Xbox One was a real last minute inclusion, they forgot to put the Microsoft logo blah blah in the PR and trailer.

What is with all of the bitter juniors lately?

There is still a lot that can be shown with this game. We are probably just seeing the tip of the ice berg.

The story is apparently going to be something like Romeo and Juliet (as cheesy as this may seem) with forbidden love and all that jazz. So yes, there will be a lot of focus on Stella.

I don't get all this female attention whoring either.
Noctis + Stellar are the prime story center characters. That's a 50% split.
Actually, it would be refreshing if the story focuses ONCE on a male person. Almost every FF game resolves around a female character.

I was wondering when the backlash was going to start.

Not everyone who prefers action RPGs is "a kid who wants instant and constant gratification". Seriously, the FF series has been circling the drain for the better part of a decade now, the last thing we need is bitter "veterans" bitching about an entry that actually looks fresh and new.

This is almost like that Onion article from Star Trek. "Trekkies Bash New Star Trek Film As 'Fun, Watchable'".

It'll be fine.

Actually it was more in the line of it being like Hamlet. Or maybe both. Who knows. Nomura said all that stuff years ago.

FFX may be a corridor (honestly, FFIX as well for that matter), but Star Ocean 3?

Don't pretend as if Versus is suddenly an example of a decision they've recently made. It was proposed as an action RPG because it's an alternate FFXIII. It was always a different version of FFXIII as an action RPG, just like Type 0 is in its own way. I'm not entirely happy with the decision to label an action RPG a mainline game (would have rather had "versus" become another subtitle), but there's no reason to turn this into "oh, this is all the fault of the young people they're catering to." Please. It's not as if the FF games prior to FFX weren't fairly shallow combat wise, either.

I'll believe it when I see it.
Speaking of "see it" . . . the new Stella looks so uninteresting. I bet they'll turn her into a "good girl" like Kairi or Namine and make her disappear now. :(

She looked like a strong female character before, now she just looks like a dough-eyed deer.

I love everything I've seen so far. The combat isn't much different from the 2011 trailer so I have no idea what people were expecting. I'm in freaking heaven. ESPECIALLY if they make sequels out of this (and I oooooh so hope they do).

That's fine and all, but you can still have more female characters with a focus on the main cast!

I think it'll probably run better on PS4 than my PC so I'll get it on that. Plus playing JRPGs on PC feels weird.
In my case my gaming PC is connected to an HDTV and I use a wireless controller on the couch with most games. Been playing Last Remnant like that and it's great (I heard there were many technical issues with the 360 version too, so that's also a plus).

It would be glorious to have a PC release for this (and KH3) since it isn't exclusive anymore anyway, so I hope they really are considering it like it sounds they are.

I don't think a single person is accusing XV of being a dudebro game. It's just an observation on the gender ratio -- there are 12 members shown, and only 2 of them are women. The last mainline FF to have less than three main female cast members was back in the NES days.

Yeah, this looks great. Gets me excited for Final Fantasy again. Speaking of which, I am also anxious to try A Realm Reborn, which also looks really good to me.

I totally agree with this.

This looked like a mature and strong woman.

And hell that's from the 2011 vid, she looks a lot worse now.

was this actually a demo at E3 with someone playing it?

I still remember the FF13 battle system trailer that was a complete lie.

I think it was supposed to be more akin to Hamlet. I really hope it has a darker plot and some tragedy in it. mmmmmm

I don't think this is quite like the 13 battle system. They are much farther along in development. When they released that mock battle system in 2006, it was just a concept. This system is a bit more realized.

I don't know. I enjoyed the 2011 trailer more. I miss Noctis flipping around the guards. Now all he does is teleport. Also, that monster reminds me too much of FF XIII.

So how does this play? I see menus and commands. . .

Ever played Kingdom Hearts? It's supposed to play like that, with menu-based action combat. Not sure how the teleportation or weapon switching works, though...

It is indeed based on Hamlet. Nomura namedropped it several times when originally announcing it.

I barely see the difference there. Maybe her eyebrow arcs are a tad softer, but that's also an in-game model in the middle of a conversation displaying some emotion.

No but all of this was clearly someone playing. No fancy camera angles like the FFXIII trailer. Plus since this a ARPG there isn't much you can hide. The only scripted moments in the game are obviously when your teammates come in and help. I would like to believe all that is dynamic AI but Square isn't ND now.

Mercy me that looked STUNNING. While I still think it is a cheap move to not create a proper XV and just rebrand this poor troubled guy, I think this will be FAR more successful for the company than the lousy XIII and so hopefully in the future they will be able to take more risks that will actually pay off (instead of be caught in development hell like this was for so long).

I can't help but feel that deciding whether a character is mature and strong based on how she looks is counterintuitive to determining character maturity and strength.

The gameplay looks janky has hell and the camera is a mess, the game needs a lot more development time looking at that gameplay trailer.

Yep it looks like Kindom hearts dream drop distance with the zapping around.

Warping is one of the menu based commands based on the UI. The swords and combats seems like FF13's ATB also going on the UI. What confusing me is the characters movement and the Party AI

The series has been bad precisely because of this direction. FF13 was pretty much a corridor walk. Before that FF12 and FFX are one of the best FF games ever made. You can't blame people for being disappointed when after waiting for like 7 years for the series to return to past glory we get a spin off Action game renamed to be FF15.

There was a reason FF Versus was not a mainline FF when it was announced.
