Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

No new Mario game will be a 'real' Mario to me unless it's a SM64 sequel. I want to explore, complete levels how I want to complete them and find secrets in a huge open Mario world with multiple hubs, fuck your pick a linear stage shit. Galaxy was so disappointing for this reason and I've been done with Nintendo ever since.

what's ridiculous is people seeing a new 3D mario game on the console and they immediately say 'yeah, but this isn't the REAL ONE'

Again, 64/Sunshine/Galaxy didn't need more than trailers to mark a new era for Mario. If 3D World genuinely offered the same caliber of innovation there wouldn't even be this pushback right now.

I played 3D Land for the first time recently and kept thinking to myself "man, I really hope they just make the next mainline Mario like this with even crazier suits and bosses". So glad it actually came true!

I'm really digging the cat-suit and the giant crack-pipes look fun. Guess I'll get a Wii U now.

Isn't Sunshine exactly what you described? I liked 64 more, but Sunshine is pretty much 64 expanded.

The Galaxy games are better than SM64 could ever hope to be, and I still like SM64. That style of Mario game isn't coming back though and people need to get over it. It's been a long ass time.

Are people who are down on it not interested in the multiplayer? That's a pretty big deal. It seems people are pretending like it's not a huge innovation for 3d Mario games. If you completely ignore the main drawing point of the game, it's not that exciting.
My perspective is that this will be one of my favorite games because I will always play it with somebody else. Four player coop is a bigger deal to me than the innovations in Galaxy.

That's because people think that this:

Why does there have to be some crazy gimmick? They brought 4 characters with unique abilities to 3D for the first time since Mario 64 DS and multiplayer for the first time. It looks like pure Mario platforming bliss and despite the hyperbole showcases Wii U's power just fine. The game looks even better in motion in HD.

It's a shame, but I'm wondering, would lag be a problem if online was introduced?

I doubt it. It's just shitty laziness. If they could have smooth online 8 years ago with Mario Kart DS, they can have smooth online in 2013 on WiiU.

It's crazy annoying, especially when you've got a system that only has 1 official controller per console.

I kind of hope that Nintendo eventually does cave in and do this, only for every single one of you to bemoan how you now have to deal with either a quarter second input delay for every jump, your co-op partners spontaneously teleporting into you, or constant chugging as the game constantly resyncs.

But considering that I've had discussions on this forum with more than one person who literally can't detect 250ms input lag, I wouldn't be surprised if people lapped it up, either.

Dey has da same artstyle tho so dey are da samegame only higher rezz!!

This game does not interest me because I already played through 3D Land on my 3DS and this looks exactly the same with higher res graphics and translucent pipes. Give me Sunshine 2 or some brave new 3D Mario and I'll buy your Wii U console, Nintendo. Until then, I'm quite content with my 3DS.

Do you think the Wii U will last long enough to see another 3D Mario game? Especially with the increased development times Nintendo now faces due to HD? Serious question; not trying to be dismissive. Do recall that the previous generation of consoles was longer than usual.

i don't think another 3d mario necessarily has to take that long to develop. they've got a lot of available assets in their pools across all of their Mario games (even ones in different genres like Kart), that should significantly cut down development time since a lot of it can be re-used with a touch up. kart 8 will free up a lot of talent that is familiar with how to make mario look good in HD.

We've had 3D Mario before, and we've had multiplayer Mario before. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm just not convinced that combining the two together is suddenly gonna result into something as unique and fresh as 64/Sunshine/Galaxy. Especially when the game's built as sequel to a Mario game that we've already played.

Again, either this is a horrible trailer doing a disservice to the game's innovation, or it's just more of the same with minor tweaks. I'm thinking it's the latter.

Thank god Nintendo can't get their heads around modern online coop because we might have to deal with lag. It's not like we've been playing smooth-as-silk twitch fighters/shooters and sports sims for years now. Mario is just too taxing for the modern connection, I'm afraid. :(((((

This game looks exactly like 3D Land but on a bigger screen and i am not really liking the cat suit to be honest.

Like a fellow member said, They definitely phoned this one in as they did with DK Wii U also.

I am glad they are releasing some games but they are playing it safe and no one can sit here and say these games are innovative, They look great in HD but we have played them on 3DS.

Give me Luigi's Mansion on Wii U (I enjoyed it)

I like nintendo and bought the Wii U on launch but the NSMB Wii U, Luigi U, DK Wii U, Mario 3D Worlds are games that just got a HD update.

I will get all of them no doubt but it's obvious what is going on here.

If this demo had impressive graphics with fully rendered cliffs and stuff instead of the 2d Mario-inspired blocky, platformy cliffs and thick, tall grass and shaders more on par with Mario Kart, it could otherwise be the exact same footage with the same gameplay and the same series of events, and people would be calling this the second coming of Jesus.

Though the art-style is a little disappointing and I would have preferred a full on Mario 3d experience, it does look like a lot of fun.

As much as I'd love a follow-up to SM64 and wish that, in its revival-craze, Nintendo would revisit its mechanics, that style of 3D platformer is dead.

And I don't think it's coming back.

Most people in the world agree with us (hence why nintendo stock is in the toilet) but unfortunately on gaf the Nintendo fans here just want to willingly accept the slop Nintendo throws at us

Im really bummed in this mario sequel. I think its lazy that Nintendo just made a straight sequel to a previous 3D Mario. Now what I think would be really fresh is if they made a sequel to an even older 3D Mario!!!

Alright so I'm revisiting Nintendo e3 games.

Developer Direct video was good. Cat suit looks like a great addition and I like the green stars to find like SMG2. I'm still underwhelmed by the visual style and the stationary camera thing does disappoint me a bit as well but I have no doubt that this is going to be a quality title.

The visual quality seems pretty good. I hope Nintendo throws Mario out of the Mushroom Kingdom for his next title though.

I want something totally new and fresh like Sunshine!!!

(i actually liked sunshine more than 64 but c'mon people even miyamoto before that game's release was calling it mario 65)

That sort of misstates the argument.

The point is less about being tired of sequels to old things, but more about wanting to revive a style of gameplay that has been largely abandoned. 3D World is in such close proximity to 3D Land that it's pretty easy to feel fatigued and disappointed at the notion that we're already returning back to that well when games along the style of SM64/Sunshine have been left by the wayside for nearly a decade.

There's a demand that's been pent up there at the possibilities of such an evolution that hasn't been built for a re-examining of 3D Land's mechanics. Your strawman argument doesn't capture that.

I think the game looks fantastic

And 3D Land was awesome, so I really want more in HD

Peach in a pussy suit... whom can hate that?

At least I hope they bring an orchestrated soundtrack like Galaxy - Melty Molten is still on my playlist every day - it was a bad idea to play upgraded 3DS sound for the unveil - if they had just re-used a remixed Galaxy track people would have been less critical

Something that I haven't seen a lot of people talk about with regards to this title are the absolutely terrible controls. Now, I'm not talking about the controls for the first player. That player is on the Gamepad, and I am sure everything feels great over there. The problem is the controls for all the other players.

At the demos on the show floor, Nintendo only had Wiimotes for all the players to control beyond the first. That meant that we were stuck using d-pads to control a 3D Mario game. I'll say that again: Nintendo forced me to play with a d-pad in a 3D Mario game. I just didn't understand. How can one play a 3d platformer effectively with a d-pad? I had to try for myself to find out. The answer is that one can't. This controlled like shit for me and anyone else I saw not being player one. When I asked the reps at the booth about other control options, they stated that the use of Nunchucks was not supported, but that they were "working on" Wii U Pro Controller support.

This to me was just an unbelievable oversight on Nintendo's part. I won't go into my other problems with the game just yet because I want to give it another chance on a controller that actually works when navigating a 3D world. I will say that I just can't imagine that the people that have made controlling characters their number one priority in the past have fumbled that aspect of this game so badly.

That didn't even dawn upon me. Hopefully they'll sort this out somehow.

Hopefully Nunchuck support at least. That will make it playable.

i was really disappointed with this at first but on second thought it looks fun, and surely the succesor to Galaxy is well on its way next year or some time.

though i'd much rather play this on 3DS. whatevs

Interesting. I was rather puzzled myself when Keighley and the Nintendo guys did that session with three of them using Wii-remotes. "Working on" support for the Pro Controller is nice, but it smells like they're hungry for money if we are not allowed to use the Wii-remote+Nunchuk option.

If SM3DW is supposed to be Nintendo's foray into 3D Mario with multiplayer, they could at least give us some decent options for controllers. It's just not sufficient to play a 3d game with a d-pad. This certainly doesn't boost my hope for this game being really successful.

I've been thinking about that, too. I won't worry unless they don't provide other control options when development ends. Everybody at least has a Wii remote, so they start with those controls first.

On the other hand, If I can only use the pro controller or Wii remote as second player when it ships, I'll be upset. Nintendo kind of sucks at supporting their controllers.

I said wow. You can't use them in NSMBU either. What's shocking is that the nun-chuck worked on the Wii game. For a company that was once heralded for their controllers and control mechanics, they sure have been making some uncharacteristic choices the past couple of years.
