The only Fire Emblem I've ever played was Sacred Stones, and I would get really giddy if we got Ephraim as our first polearm user, or Eirika to be the first sword user focusing on thrusting attacks.

Doubt it, SS isn't exactly the most popular FE game. If we had to choose a polearm user from the lords I'd rather it be Sigurd, since he can use his horse in battle as well and I think that'd be pretty interesting. Also technically Marth's moveset should be more thrusting orientated. His first weapon is a rapier IIRC and there's his charge B attack too. Weird I remember searching years ago about the falchion and it said it was a type of rapier and now apparently it was closer to a scimitar.

I care. Twilight Princess is old news now, and I really prefer Link's design in Skyward Sword. Not updating to the new model just seems lazy.

It could technically be based on the tech demo Zelda.

Also, this isn't the first time. Young Link in Melee was based on Ocarina, rather than Majora's Mask, in spite of Majora's Mask stage. He had the kokiri shield, rather than Majora's Mask Hero shield, and even though he could use the hook and bow, like MM's young Link, the design of those weapons weren't based on the ones from Majora's Mask, and they were just there due to reusing attacks from standard Link.

That's still the same character, though. Point is these are two very different Links. They mentioned updating Samus appearance to match Other M, but they won't feature a new Link? Doesn't make any sense.

I guess they chose him over the SS Link so that Ganon doesn't feel odd against him and Zelda. That said, it's a bit weird indeed. It's yet another reason to have heavily different alternate costumes for some characters -- to the point that they aren't just a nod to a different character, but a different character (with taunts and voice overs for some). Link doesn't need that too much (a recolor would be easy to do, changing the tunic and hair a bit), but Zelda definitely would (and so would Falco with Fox). But I think it would be great even for Link, because different taunts would denote that Skyward Sword Link is fully in.
