Well, I'm glad I got that out of my system

This and the villager, a gold mine of lol.

I'm wondering if those are the final names for the games.... "for Wii U"?

gross

Doubt it. Just a place holder for now, like "Super Mario", "Mario Party", etc. If there was just one SSB, they'd probably just have called it "Super Smash Bros." at E3.

edit: Wait, it's confirmed? lolwut

Confirmed, yes. :(

I mean they're just kinda reporting what the titles have been revealed as really. It says final names in the title but the article just kinda says "this is what Sakurai is saying"
I don't know. I think they probably are final though because they made nice new logos for them. That tends to suggest they're final. Otherwise they'd have revealed it with the Brawl logo or something.

He didn't outright say alt costumes were deconfirmed.

Technically he is saying the customisation will not be costume based, but don't hold your breath for alt costume for each character.

At best we may get more Melee Peach's Daisy looks which modified a few things rather than strictly alt colours.

It was just the way he said that costumes would kill the uniqueness of each character. Makes it seem like he doesn't want any alt costumes.

Though that wouldn't fit with the fact that Wario had one in Brawl, so maybe you guys are right. I'll wait for a more solid deconfirm.

Deconfirmation on alternate costumes :(

Isn't that more about customized costumes on the characters rather than preset alt. costumes? He's saying that the customization won't involve costumes. That seems more like he's denying something like Tekken 6's custom outfits. Preset alternate costumes aren't really "customization".

God I'm worried about the comment about the amount of characters. This will keep me up at every night for the next one and a half years.

Huge cop-out on those names. And disappointed in no alt costumes, but I didn't really expect them. At this point I'm really curious what's going to be done to truly differential this game from previous entries.

Another way to read it is that he is talking about costume parts like a create a character mode. So you'd unlock hats, tops, bottoms etc. But that could result in the whole cast wearing sombrero so characters lost part of their identity like Mario's cap or Samus' helmet. He wants to avoid that.

Ah I see. That makes more sense. I misunderstood.

Thanks for the clarification.

Probably talked about already, but the fact that the roster of the game will be smaller because of the 3DS version is a REAL bummer.

NO! This means Toon Link will definitely be leaving :,( I had hope he could still appear alongside the Spirit Tracks version on that stage but coupled with the reduced roster... Aw man! I was hoping for some really cool move changes like including the Deku Leaf and Snake Whip and stuff... :(

That's not what he said. Don't put words into his mouth.

"The reality of the situation unfortunately is that there are certain limitations on the 3DS," Sakurai said. The 3DS and Wii U versions of the next Smash Bros will have the same library of characters.

"So we're forced into the situation where we may need to reduce some characters to a certain degree. but we're really working hard in order to include as many characters as possible."

That certainly isn't going to mean reduce aspects of certain characters, like moves and stuff. In a fighting game? No. That can only mean one thing. Reducing the amount of characters.

Good thing it's the stages that interest me more and the Wii U version should hopefully be able to pump out some gorgeous re-imaginings of classic locations.

Deconfirmation on alternate costumes :(

Well the good news is that the customization idea he had in the past is apart of the game. I'm very interested to see what it is and how it works.

That's not a deconfirmation on alternate costumes. Just that it wouldn't be customizable costumes judging by the context of his statement.

If they get rid of a few of the clone characters (Falco, Young/Teen Link, Pichu, etc.) but replace them with entirely new ones, I think we all win.

Ganondorf needs to stay in though, and he needs his own unique moveset this time. He deserves better than being a Falcon clone.

Fuck you, Toon Link is my main, second to Kirby.

So what's the general consensus on characters leaving the series? Who's more likely to leave the series?

My guess would be Ike, Pokemon Trainer, Lucario, Wolf, Toon Link, Snake (obviously). I'd say Lucas too but I'm not sure how popular he is and since Ness is the only other Mother character, he has a chance to stay.

Edit: I see there's a discussion on the previous page.

My guesses would be:

Lucario - Pokemon is going to get a lot of characters no matter what, and he's probably the least important Pokemon in Brawl, so if anyone is going to get cut, he's probably pretty high on the list. But because he's used even now to promote the fifth Pokemon generation, he could stay.

Ike - Basically the same reason as Lucario. If roster space is limited, then Ike isn't going to be kept when there are newer Fire Emblem characters to choose from. But just like Lucario, he's still kind of relevant, so I'm not counting on him being cut either.

Lucas - Mother is a finished series, Lucas's game isn't loved as much as Ness's (partially because it's still Japan-only, making him the only Japan-exclusive character in Brawl), and he is somewhat similar to Ness. However, Mother is still considered big enough that Earthbound being part of the special VC program was used to heavily promote the Wii U in Japan, and Lucas being kind of similar to Ness could actually make him more likely to stay in.

Young / Toon Link - He's probably the most clone-like character in Brawl's cast. Like with Lucas, I'm not sure if that makes him more or less likely to get cut.

Snake - This all depends on inter-company stuff and how Sakurai feels about guest characters. Since we don't know how exactly Sakurai views Snake and how Konami feels about him being in this game, I don't think we can reasonably speculate on whether he'll get cut or not, but I think he's more likely to get cut than a lot of the cast. I do think that if he gets cut, there being no Metal Gear games on Wii U will have absolutely nothing to do with it.

Falco - I think if any Star Fox character gets cut, it's not going to be Wolf. He's a more prominent character in Star Fox than Falco, he's even more mechanically different from Fox than Falco is, and as I understand it, Sakurai wanted to include Wolf ever since the first Smash Bros. but was never able to. If Sakurai really has to start cutting down on roster space, both Falco and Wolf might go, but otherwise I think Falco might be the only one cut.

Pokemon Trainer - He might not get cut, but Sakurai's comments on the 3DS version creating limitations probably mean that he'll be affected more than anyone else. If it weren't for that comment, I would have full confidence in him returning.

People who I'm sure definitely aren't going to be cut: Marth, Ness, Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, Sonic.

Modeling someone after Falcon can only be a huge compliment.

That certainly isn't going to mean reduce aspects of certain characters, like moves and stuff. In a fighting game? No.

In a different interview posted a few pages back, we got a comment about how some characters have problems being implemented into the 3ds, especially the ones with more than one "body", like the Ice Climbers (although It's not very clear if the specific example came from Sakurai or the interviewer). They might be talking there about the same problem - changing people like the Ice Climbers or Olimar to make them work in the 3DS version.

Doesn't sound like the roster is getting smaller, but the roster will be limited to what the 3DS is capable of. I'm thinking that Pikmin are the biggest problems to the roster.

I think their problem with 3DS limitations are Olimar, Pokemon Trainer (big if) and Ice Climbers.

Dude, if they get rid of Pikmin, I'm going to throw a tantrum. But I seriously doubt he will.

Well, I stand corrected! I should wait 5 minutes before I post things so it's not my knee-jerk reaction being thrust onto these pages xD

This.
It would be awesome.

Now I'll be disappointed if it doesn't happen :(

The Smash Bros. seems to be one of the worst fighters when it comes to actual character alts. Funny that Namco is developing with them, they usually get it right.

Hope this Smash goes all out in that department.

The thing about interpreting Samus any further is that she has potential to be the single most broken thing in the series easily. Imagine:

- Walk/run speed as fast as she was in Smash 64
- Power Bombs (down + hold B)
- Armored Speed Boots Run as her side smash; cancellable with down into a Shinespark charge
- Plasma+Wave+Ice fusion beam that was spammable (and had the same piercing/chance of freezing as it did in the games); hold B to hold charge and release to fire stupid fast beam

...

Fuck, I want this now. :lol

See, Samus is probably the second most powerful character (third?) in Smash going by games.

Second because Super Sonic exists, for the record. Maybe third because Kirby's also technically pretty powerful? God I want Crash Kirby as his new Final Smash...

I just realized how much I love the logo animation.

I doubt they will, but they may not make Pikmin being able to follow you. Of course, this is all conjecture based on what was said which was not specific enough.
