What's up with all the negativity around The Last of Us now?

I dont see any negativity here.
People are only complaining about tlhe Friendly AI not dectected by enemy ai which was done on purpose.

And the game has got great user opinion feedback so ?

There's a vocal minority of people who are criticising certain aspects, and while they're perfectly entitled to their own opinions I think the idea of a 'backlash' or widespread negativity is ridiculous.

The criticisms just stand out more amongst the sea of praise - nothing spectacular about this reaction whatsoever.

The main thing that annoys me about the gaming press is that they can have a game that's universally praised.

Then a month later, when they see it's getting hated on, they all turn on it and act like they always thought it was bad.

Resistance 2 is a perfect example of this.

Resistance 2 is probably the ultimate example ever. 87 Metacritic, not sure if I've ever heard a games critic praise it after the month in which it came out.

No game will ever be safe from being universally praised then burned to ashes. It's happened virtually every great title post-NES.

I always envisioned this scenario when these things happen:

There are 100 game reviewers, and each one of them personally thought the game should be rated:

10/10 - 20
9/10 - 30
8/10 - 25
7/10 - 10
1-6/10 - 15

And so the reviews should reflect that. But reviewers in the 1-8 category go and say, "Well, I personally thought it was a 7/10, but I realize that most people would rate it higher so I should do that since it is more reflective of the whole." Also, outlets seem to give certain games to reviewers that are more likely to "like" or "get" certain games (thus improving the average score).

Basically, I feel a lot of reviewers score based on what they feel the target Metascore will be, not what they personally feel it should be, and thus good games skew too high (and bad games probably skew too low).

TLoU is a great example: there's literally no way consumer opinions will follow the same breakdown as reviewers.

I hate this piece of shit game. I forgot to go pick it up from Gamestop (got distracted reading GAF). it never ends with this fucking piece of garbage.. next I'm gonna have to PLAY it?

You know what was real? People who didn't play the game ripping on the couple of reviewers who didn't like it.

From my few hours with the game I'd say all of the review praise is mostly for the writing and story. It's top notch, really. And everything about the presentation from the sound design to the voice acting to the animation is stellar also.

Gameplay-wise it's not really blowing my mind. Now "Clunky gameplay" is an exaggeration I think. I like the combat a lot and I like how tense encounters can get. But mechanically it's nothing that hasn't been done before.

I think whether or not people agree with the barrage of 10/10 reviews and the Citizen Kane stuff will mostly hinge on their enjoyment of the characters and the plot. So far that's clearly the biggest point of interest. I can't really get with all that talk personally, but I'm enjoying it nonetheless.

Guess I was right in skipping out on this game. Those were my main issues with Uncharted and the bits of Uncharted 2 I played. If I don't find the gameplay fun or exciting more than likely even the best story in the world won't save it.

Yeah i have seen the critisicm.

As i said apart from friendly AI which enemy dont dectect, i dont see any other issues that vocal.

TBH friendly ai not being detected is better imo

I think you'll find that on the Internet, it's much cooler to be down on a game that everyone loves than to love it too. How anyone could shit on Infinite in retrospect is pretty much proof of this theory. Maybe there are some people that don't like it, but I'd be willing to bet that a large majority of the people that are dogging the game have never played the game. Just play it for you. If you like it, why does it matter what everyone else thinks?

I haven't played it yet, but it's sitting on my couch as I type. I'm looking forward to getting off of work so I can give it a go.

Talk about a backslash?

Besides the autosave glitch, people are complaining about dumb AI, bad graphics, clunky gameplay, repetition and so on.

Where's the catch here? I thought the game was praised universally for a reason.

Still patiently waiting to unbox my copy later tonight.

um, the same people that lavished it with praise are not the same people who all just got it in their hands today.

How linear is the game?

Not as linear as Uncharted. You have multiple ways to kill or avoid your enemies or when you enter a building you can search around looking for items but to get to the goal you have just one way.

Not going to say anything till i beat it. But don't see the point of this thread when it can be in the OT. I see more positive then negative.

The thing you are filming a video of (your television) is in landscape orientation. This means that it is wider than it is tall.

The thing you are using to film the video is in portrait orientaton. This means that it is taller than it is wider.

Do you think this mix of decisions has lead to the video being as clear as possible?

It's called "art".

I won't be able to play this until tomorrow, so I've been staying out of the OT until I can dive in. Are the complaints really that bad? Maybe the game was just overhyped, I tend to think that about most exclusives.

The complaints aren't that bad. Just play the game and find out for yourself.

This is just a basic pathfinding error, I can't possibly imagine you or anyone would hold stuff like this against this game [or any other game, for that matter].

Show me one game where this DOESN'T happen.

Well, in a game like CoD, who gives a shit if the AI gets stuck. They will eat their grenade and fall down like everyone else.

On a game like Last of Us, for which stealth is a major component of the game, you need to have spot on AI.

I'm not slagging the game here, but it is what it is. Game actually looks amazing, but I will hold off until it's been patched up and down.

Less than a month from now, with the OT still active in the gaming forum, one "brave" poster will create a new thread about how awful and overrated TLoU is.

The vast majority of impressions I've read have been overwhelmingly positive on GAF. Looks like you're selectively reading or only paying attention to a very vocal minority.

I think it's the "not next gen" effect. We've been seeing so much next-gen stuff during the E3 week it's become easyer to be jaded by even great and groundbreaking current-gen stuff like the last of us. It doesn't help that game journalists have depicted it as the second coming of the christ... Making everyone's expections sky high.

also the cover system is the best i've seen in a videogame.

While that's true sometimes, it's also important to note that some people may enjoy it overall and at the same time not find it to be quite as great as the initial media praise (seriously, read some of those review).

Like I said earlier, I'm enjoying it and would recommend it to anyone with a PS3, it's just not blowing my mind or anything, ya know?

What game around here has lasted the hype when it get's high initial reviews? I'm pretty sure that's impossible.

Looking at Gamerankings all time best, I'd say that Ocarina, Galaxy 1, Galaxy 2, Soulcalibur, Orange Box and Metroid Prime are all largely still loved today.

Uncharted 2 is more iffy, but still far more positive.

GTA4 is the only real outlier and it's the biggest example ever of games journalists overhyping something.

Hmm, I haven't noticed too much of a backlash. The game has a few niggling issues but, overall, it's extremely well designed and beautifully executed. Truly a marvelous experience.

A Naughty Dog game with great characters and story and great visual presentation but less than stellar gameplay?

Surely you jest.

Game is overrated , our opinion dont count. Look at the negativity !

it seems people really want to make this game bioshock infinite 2.0

And the game got released today , lol

Gameplay is great

A few days I watched Citicen Kane for the first time. It was really good. Excellent. And a movie.

Now, do you know what they say about Citicen Kane?? If you go in all hyped and stoked about seeing the best movie ever made in history... which means this will instantly blow away your so far favourite movie, rite?... oh boy. OH BOY.

I expected a good movie. I got a really great one. Nice.

If you read all those TLO reviews and then went in all hyped, I am really sorry for you.

Because for some reason people here forgot that video game reviewers give out 10/10 scores way more often then they deserve them. Then people got super hyped and now what is probably still a really good game feels like a let down.

No it's not. You look outside of your bubble of GTA4 hate and you'll see it's still one of the biggest, most played games of this generation.

Plus it's very disingenuous to hate on GTAIV years after it released. At the time, it was pretty amazing. We'd not seen that kind of detail in an open world game before. Now there are many carbon copies.

Reviewers give their opinion immediately after having played the game. If anyone thought GTAIV was shit immediately after playing it on release, I'd guess those people would be in a mental institution by now.

Well I've been avoiding most discussion of this game but the review thread was just embarassing to read. If I got dogpiled for being skeptical of 11/10 CITIZEN KANE OF GAMING, and I ended up unimpressed by the game, I'd fire back too.

Anyways I'm out the door to go pick up my copy (and my PS3) from the post office right now. Time to form my own opinions!

What does that have to do with anything?

A game can have mixed reception and still be loved and played by tons of people.

CoD is the biggest game series in the world right now but anyone who says they have near universal love among gamers is lying out their ass.

Compared to games like Galaxy and Ocarina, GTA4 receives far more hate. It's not even debatable.

There were numerous people criticizing GTA4 a month after release. And nothing can excuse reviewers ridiculous talk about GTA4's storyline.

Slightly off topic, but I'm kinda bummed out about the number of times I've had to watch ads for this game whilst trying to watch E3 videos.

I know I'm getting it for my birthday in just over a week's time, so I haven't bought it or played it yet and I'm already starting to feel burned out on it.

Reviewers.
As usual, they blow shit out of proportion and people find out its not that great.
I'm surprised a lot of people still have trust in them.
