Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS: Info Collection - Dojo, Mega Man and Trailer! 2014!

That seems like a lot of characters to start off with. I'm gonna go with 25-30 being there from the start.

Brawl: 22
FH4XGHW.jpg

It's possible for the number of starters to grow that big depending on the amount of character slots added.

Go ahead and cut them Sakurai:

Toon Link- Redundant. No need for a second Link anymore.
Wolf- Meh character.
Lucario- RIP my main, but replace it with a new 'mon if need be.
Snake- He would be great if he actually appeared on a Nintendo console once in awhile.

and just fully merge ZSS and Samus.
Toon Link is great. Lets not remove him. The only character I'd really want to see removed is Snake. Lucario is a maybe. People want him to be removed for Mewtwo but I don't want an entire SSB roster full of gen 1 pokemon.

cut snake because hes not on nintendo consoles a lot?

pfft

get rid of ice climbers instead then

how often do you see them and there not even iconic IMO

besides snake appeared in MGS3 on the 3ds

so booyah

Just like in Brawl, some starters from previous games could also move to secret character status. I can see Diddy, Dedede and Lucas being fine secret characters.

I'd also swap Ike for Marth. Make Marth a starter with Ike as the unlockable.

I think they'll end up changing Pkm Trainer to Pokemon X and Y starters. As prominent as squirtle, ivysaur, and charizard are to the series it makes the most sense. Jigglypuff and Pikachu will never leave.

I'd be surprised if Ike came back. Are they really going to 1) give FE 3+ reps or 2) go with an old character instead of the star from the newer game?

Why does it make the most sense? It makes the least sense to me, considering they didn't make him the Diamond/Pearl trainer to push those games in Brawl.

He represents the first games of the series. Pikachu and Jigglypuff represent the entire series as a brand.

There seems to be a bit of a pattern for what veterans are secret, and which are starting characters. Aside from Ness and Captain Falcon being available from the start in Melee, if a character is introduced as secret or available from the game they debuted in, usually that pattern stays the same for the next Smash Bros.

For example, Luigi is unlockable in all 3 Smash games, Mr. Game & Watch is unlockable in Melee and Brawl, Ice Climbers were available from the start in Melee and Brawl, etc.

I think that for X/Y they'll just add a character (or two) that represents that generation. Whoever ends up being the poster-child(ren) or the focus of another movie/TV Special would be safe bets.

But PKMN Trainer and his trio are probably a bit too iconic that I can't see them getting replaced. The G1 crowd would take that as an affront even worse than when Mewtwo didn't make the cut at the last minute.

Roy and Marth have no chance over Lucina or Google Chrome.

Roy is one thing, but Marth is still "Mr. Fire Emblem" to many FE fans.

If anything, we might get either one of the two or both, if Ike gets the short straw. But Marth's not going anywhere.

FE is a bigger brand than Star Fox, and Star Fox has 3 characters.

Smash has never been about flavor of the month newest characters. That's not how the roster is formed.

It's the same arguments when Lucas was revealed. "Oh, Ness is out, RIP Ness. They're going to use the latest in the series!"

It makes the most sense if they plan on putting Mewtwo in the game to replace Lucario. Otherwise Lucario would be replaced with an X/Y Pokemon. There's no reason all the Pokemon should be from Gen 1 and no reason they should use up additional slots for Pokemon.

Maybe. I just see it as a possibility if they replace Lucario with Mewtwo. If Lucario is replaced with an X/Y Pokemon then Pkm trainer can possibly stay.

Edit: I wasn't following Smash that much when Mewtwo was replaced. Was it really that bad?

Yeah, and they could wonderfully represent X & Y by removing Lucario and replacing it with this new wacky Mewtwo.

I say have Mewtwo return, but have him transform via Final Smash or just a transformation move. Switching between his Power and Speed forms (if those are in fact Power / Speed forms)

Mewtwo can represent X/Y and the 1st gen at the same time

The Pokemon roster, to me, seems to be
Pikachu (duh)
Jigglypuff (with more fairy like animations)
Pokemon Trainer Red (Charizard/Squirtly/Ivysaur)
Lucario (still a really popular Pokemon)
Mewtwo (either with x/y form as an alt costume or as his final smash)

The thing with Pokemon X/Y is that it's taking old Pokemon and re-inventing them. It just happens that 2 of these Pokemon (Jigglypuff and Mewtwo) are Smash vets so it works perfectly!

I don't see why Mewtwo has to replace Lucario or why Lucario has to be replaced at all, or why Jiggly and Mewtwo can't be X/Y reps.

I'm going to bump this post again.

Alright, it's speculation time!

If we are getting 49 characters slots and 1 random slot, then I would set up those characters as starter characters to build up better surprise characters. I'm going to filling out characters for fun but for argument reason, you can replaced those names with Newcomer?

Point of this speculation is that I hope that Sakurai would go with this pattern. This pattern should provide the rollar coaster of emotions for many smashers.

For example, it will raise some kind of fear for players that might think their main characters would be gone. Also it could go other way for people who would be excited to see R.O.B being gone until they personally unlocked the character. They would throw a huge fit of rages. People would be pleased and surprised by more newcomers characters being secret characters, unlike Brawl.

49 characters slots = between 52 to 54 characters (including party characters, transforming characters, etc)

It's the same arguments when Lucas was revealed. "Oh, Ness is out, RIP Ness. They're going to use the latest in the series!"

It's already happened for FE once. Marth (biggest FE name) + Roy (lead for the newest game). Then Marth (biggest FE name) + Ike (lead for the newest game).

Of course it's not a given that they'll follow that again, but logically we would get Marth and Chrom. Which would be pretty unfortunate.

And the only reason that FE is a bigger brand now is because Star Fox is basically dead. Had Awakening not been the huge success it was, FE would be dead too.

To be frank, I'd honestly rather not see any characters replaced, unless it's a character that stands to "take over where a previous character left off" (re: Y. Link -> Toon Link -> maybe LTTP Link?). It goes against proper fighting game parlance where the roster should get bigger and everybody should just be able to carry over their knowledge of a character to a new game. I'm honestly hoping that the fact Namco is involved will hopefully circumvent the need to cut the Brawl roster at all.

Anyway, if you really want an example of what it was like when Mewtwo was taken out? If possible, go look up the posts of a former GAF poster named "Greatness Gone"... :lol

I really don't see pokemon trainer being replaced or changed, they might make him a bit better, but he was one of my favourite additions to brawl.

I'd be really sad if I couldn't play as squirtle or charizard in smash 4.

Possibly. If they go with Mewtwo's alt form and change his move set so it wouldn't be identical to Lucario it could work. Just remember they don't think the same way we do :p

It might make a lot of sense to us, but who knows what they'll end up going with. I have nothing against any of those characters being in the game.

I wholeheartedly agree. I'd prefer even the clones to stick around. The problem is that they end up being sacrifices so the roster size doesn't get out of control. People are always going to expect new characters in Smash so it's only natural for some of the previous roster to get removed. =/ The only guaranteed characters in my mind are the Smash 64 roster :p

I'll look some of his posts up. I remember him. Isn't he perm'd? haha

LOL

First lord in the series and a character as close to being one of the primary 8 as you can be for appearing in the second Smash game and you think the power of the new/female is going to endanger his spot? Mind you, I love Lucina myself, but ain't no way in hell Marth's getting put within 10 feet of the chopping block.

Tangent: I'm of the opinion that this cast is hitting the 50 mark and also that Fire Emblem has proven itself in popularity and critical acclaim to get more than 2 reps. Of course I'm not Sakurai so this is all up in the air.

Everyone keeps asking about megaman's moves, so I made some crappy MS paint images to get the point across:

A moves

B Moves

Air Moves (up air is seen only in the bildorff vs sakurai fight and looks like air man's attack)

Smash Attacks

Grab/Final Smash

Final Smash is just a guess, but the yellow devil could come down, do his teleport cycle one/twice and hit everyone who can't dodge properly. It could also be a stage hazard.

Amazing diagram. We need this for the other characters.

Roy was planned for Brawl but was cut because of time concerns. He also wasn't too popular and was a clone (which also probably led to him being cut).

Ike is a unique character, popular in Brawl and still unique as far as FE characters go.

People who don't care about that, would see oh great more characters, play with them for a little bit and because they don't care about such intricacies easily be annoyed at the fact that there are a bunch of same characters.

Because Sakura and Akuma are so unpopular and annoyed players worldwide. That's why Capcom had to drop them, right? That's also why Evil Ryu never reappeared after his first game... right? Even sticking to Smash Bros, Roy was really popular among general players (not competitive ones, who disliked him because they saw that his main advantage was actually a disadvantage). Just adding fire and explosions to his attack made him stand out to a lot of people. You try to generalize your own opinion too much. Saying that competitive players = appreciate clones, Other players = hate them is a big fallacy. Yes, there are people who hate them, but there are people who enjoy them anyway even without being competitive players.

im just worried were getting less stages and fighters and lower content in general...

The 3DS version will have the same number of characters as the console version according to the developer video. It's not confirmed that they'll have the same cast, but Sakurai's comments make it seem like he's trying to do that (like an IGN article where he talks about some characters being harder to implement in the 3DS version, like Ice Climbers, due to being tow characters on screen at once, but he's trying to do it anyway).

There's seems to be a bit of a pattern for what veterans are secret, and which are starting characters. Aside from Ness and Captain Falcon being available from the start in Melee, if a character is introduced as secret or available from the start, usually that pattern stays the same for the next Smash Bros.

That was more like a pattern specific to Brawl. Every character who had ever been hidden in a previous Smash was a locked character again in Brawl, if they still were in the game. Melee didn't really follow that.

It's worth noting that every Melee character (with the exception of Young Link and Pichu, who would have been replaced by their more recent equivalents) was supposed to be in Brawl, but Sakurai kept running into development problems and they didn't have time to include everybody. Sakurai Tweeted last year that development on SSB4 was going smoothly, so hopefully with Namco Bandai's bandwidth he's able to include everything he wants to. I could only assume there's a more capable dev team working on this than Game Arts.

One thing I'm not sure I like about Mega Man.

You can shoot with A.
You can run and shoot with A.
You can jump and shoot with A.
You cannot run and jump and shoot with A; air tilt results in Flame Sword or Slash Claw, which have less range.

That's a very good point. I wish we knew the roster (minus unlockables) already and didn't have to suffer the dojo updates :P

Correct me if i'm wrong, but if you jump at an angle and then not press the stick while mid-air, you'll still jump and shoot.

"What is momentum"

Just let go of the analogue stick for second like you would have to do with any character when you want to do their Nair whilst moving forward/backward.

Yeah, I don't really see them taking out Pkmn Trainer. The trio system was an extremely unique mechanic and, much like Ice Climbers and Olimar, I think he's safe for that reason alone (although there are plenty of other reasons to keep him around as well). Sakurai loves diversity and quirkiness, and those unique control schemes set those characters apart in a pretty unique way.

I'd rather see Falco go just because Wolf is more unique.

I agree with this; Wolf was great to play as. I just wish he had a different Final Smash; Star Wolf never even used Landmasters!

Not to mention it's great to villain reps from the franchises; it's why I'd also love to see characters like K. Rool, Black Shadow, and Ridley added.

As for the Fire Emblem reps, would it really be that unreasonable to have Marth, Lucina, and Chrom? Awakening is one of the most popular FEs yet, so it wouldn't surprise me if it got three reps.

I'd also LOVE if Tharja was playable. Let me dream

Oh, Google Chrome?

I think you are insane for thinking that Marth wouldn't be in next Smash, but Roy is just a filler character I put in the list to make the point.

I made a mistake; I meant to say Ike, not Marth. Ike is gone, no way he is coming back. Not over the two perfect Awakening replacements that could easily replicate his move-set.

Well, Wolf can use Wolfen instead.

I think they took that from Star Fox Assault multiplayer. I'm not 100% sure as I haven't played the game in years.

Well, I mean from my perspective, they can replace the Pokemon themselves and not the trainer. He'd still be unique with different Pokemon.

What input does that Marvel vs. Capcom uppercut move? Up tilt?
