Angry Joe and Major Nelson Interview at E3 2013

The Interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RtSGFryKwo

Xbox One AJ Interview Discussion & Story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPC4XzyE3Gc

Background:

- Interview was catching Major nelson in between interviews, spur of the moment
- He wanted to use a piece of paper to remember audience's questions
- PR cut him off for the end of the interview, saved important questions for last but did not have time.
- He wanted to conduct the interview in a civil and well mannered way.
- His eyes are away from Major nelson because he was keeping an eye on the Microsoft PR

Info Learned/Confirmed/ I Don't Know because I am still confused as well:

Used game can only be given to a friend once and this friend is stuck with the game

Check this follow up video, Joe has more info about the family pack.

Says he later found out that Larry was slight mistaken, it is 2 people at the same time. But when 2 people at the same time its for singleplayer only. Also the other 8 people are not locked out from playing other games in the shared library. DLC is also shared.

-Publishers can work with Microsoft to meet their concerns apparently, example given CD Projekt
-You can use phone tethering for people with poor internet connections

Some cringeworthy spinning by Hyrb. Also Joe's going really soft on them compared to his "you fucking idiots!" rants when he doesn't have to confront a person.

Put a person of authority in front of these so called "voice of the angry people" and they shrivel up like a scared turtle.

Angry Joe actually asks some good questions here, love to see Larry squirm and try to spin Steam as worse than Xbone and the cloud transistor bullshit lmao

Joe seems disappointed in his performance. He didn't get to cut down Nelson's generous use of changing the subject and strawman arguments.

Fantastic interview, much better than that dunce on Reddit.

Nelson is very frustrated, (10 minute mark).

i'm not very familiar with that major nelson guy but he comes off as a huge douche in this one.

Watch the Reddit interview, he's being a complete fool and answering questions from some girl who isn't anywhere near informed to tackle the actual conversation.

Joe did a great job making him squirm

So I think that adds some clarity to the game share issue. No simultaneous play of a single game, which seems fair. What wasn't addressed is whether more than one friend can access a single user's share simultaneously. If it truly does work like any other library, then all 10 friends and the actual owner should be able to play 11 different games simultaneously.

So good to see Angry Joe asking questions that sound like literally coming out of a gamers mouth. Makes me even more disappointed in the general journalist interviews.

Joe explained why he went soft on him in an earlier video. It turns out he got this interview through a scheduling error and didn't want to make it worse for the assistant responsible.

Nelson makes the family plan sound like only one person can play at a time.

Can MS please get their shit together and clarify half this stuff?

Interesting to see Major Nelson advocating abusing the family sharing feature.

Thats probably the official MS PR line now as a knee-jerk response to all the hate. Its their only defense mechanism and they might regret it as well considering the implications of sharing and one-at a time..

Like i said in the other thread, joe asks what needed to be asked and Nelson is not pleased and his arrogance was growing with the minute and not listening and running around the questions.

This needs to be one of the questions asked in the followup.

Around the 7 minute mark they just straight up move onto another question lol

Kind of awkward interview so far. Haven't watched part 2 yet.

Lol at the "I'm not a lawyer, are you a lawyer?" When Joe asked about the legal problems that may happen in EU.

This is by far the single best interview with M.N.

Major Nelson's answer seemed to plainly be that shared games can only be played by one person at a time.

Every executive seems to have a different answer for this crap.

Spencer and Mehdi were also saying similar things.

“I think the policy makes sense,” Spencer said. “It’s not ten different people all playing the game concurrently, but when you think about a real usage scenario, and we thought about it around a family, and I know certain people will create a family group of people that aren’t all part of the same family, and I do think that’s an advantage, and people will use that. I saw it on NeoGAF instantly, the Xbox Family creation threads, where people said 'Hey be a part of my family.'”

Since its announcement, there has been some confusion over the details of sharing your Xbox One game library with up to ten "family members." Mehdi couldn't give comprehensive details, but he did clarify some things.

For one, a family member doesn't have to be a "blood relative," he said, eliminating the extremely unlikely possibility that the Xbox One would include a built-in blood testing kit. For another, they don't have to live in the primary owner's house—I could name a friend that lives 3,000 miles away as one of my "family members" Mehdi said.

It sort of reminds me of what Tretton said back in 06:
Sony announced that players who download games from PlayStation's online shop can share them on up to five other PS3 machines.

If a player logs into his PlayStation 3 account on a friend's system, he can download any game he has already purchased. "You can send that content to four other friends for that initial investment," said Tretton. "We want to get the game in as many hands as possible."

"It's not about generating profits at each and every interaction with the consumer," he said. "I think that really offsets the argument that says, 'Wow, that's a really pricey system.'"

Makes me wonder if they're gonna attach some strings to it we haven't heard about yet or if it'll get phased out once the generation is midway.

Put a person of authority in front of these so called "voice of the angry people" and they shrivel up like a scared turtle.

Are you serious?

You think Major Nelson would stay with him if he was ranting and calling him names? The guy would just walk away. If you want an interview you need to stay respectful and professional at least.

This is by far the single best interview with M.N.

It will happen, they do not know it yet but i will sit and eat popcorn when EU is going to fine microsoft again.

I'm glad he's actually asking some good questions.

Bullshit from Larry as usual.

It's hilarious how much he spinned the Military question and then they forced Joe to move on. Bullshit bullshit bullshit.

Man Major Nelson got pissy as fuck. He is such a dick.

Put a person of authority in front of these so called "voice of the angry people" and they shrivel up like a scared turtle.

If they acted like they do in their solo performances when conducting an interview it would be over before they got to ask one question. There's a major difference between a hyperbolic persona and being an asshole.

And you have to remember it's an Xbox fan, talking to who might actually be the only Microsoft exec who seems to have any idea how to handle PR. And he still comes off as pretty skeptical.

Ah Youtube...

Ok so that's a third answer to the sharing question :p

We should think of it as a library, only one person can play at a time. That kind of confirms it, right?

Put a person of authority in front of these so called "voice of the angry people" and they shrivel up like a scared turtle.

You having a laugh? If people started screaming at them during an interview they'd be escorted out the building. Don't be stupid.

This interview is actually pretty good. Respect to Joe for sticking to his questions and pressing MajorNelson unlike some other interviewers who just agree with his first statement.

Wow, the pr ladies in the background just told him to go to a next question when MN was struggling to answer one.. Good job going in with the hard questions AJ.

Awkward. Larry looked like he wanted to clock him a couple of times. "Easy fix?!? Are you an engineer?!?" What a douche.

EDIT: Joe, stop apologizing, own it bro. You're a good interviewer just work on the confidence.
