Jade Raymond's Assassin's Creed: Teaser trailer

Das-J said:
Guy at the desk next to me used to work there and from what he says that place is like a sweat shop. Long hours, low pay and the studio going out of their way to screw employees. Phil, can you confirm?

yup, i worked there for 9 months and actually lost my mind.
the amount of bullshit you have to deal with is frightening.
and considering the payoff, totally not worth it.
when you work at ubi, you constantly have to deal with editorial, which is a bunch of out of touch frenchmen who come to town every couple of month to tell you everything suck and completely change the direction of the project. most teams try to ignore them as much as possible, but they basicly own your ass, so it can be difficult.

to give you a very good example, when redsteel shipped, editorial was giving itself a BIG pat on the back, saying things like "at last, a team listened to us, and it made for a great game!". and as we all know, redsteel turned out to be a laughable piece of shit.

they recently upped the entry level salary by a few grand in a desperate effort to attract students. this is because ubi is constantly losing a LOT of people to other studios.
in montreal, there's basicly 2 types of people: people who work at ubi, and people who worked at ubi.

the 9 months i spent there working on the ****ing horrible trainwreck that was open season nearly made me leave videogames forever.

now im working at another studio, on far less sexy games, but i do little to no overtime, and i dont need to deal with a bunch of ****ing frenchmen with their heads up their asses.

i was fired just ebfore the fall of martin tremblay (he was fired too, BTW). so i was lucky enough never to work under the Yannis Mallet reign.

i dont know the guy personally but ive met him a number of times at a number of industry functions and he always striked me as being the biggest douche i have ever encountered.

i once saw him introduce clint hocking at an IGDA meeting. it was 5 minutes of pure masturbation. ubisoft is great, clint is great, together we are great, ubisoft is a world leader, clint is a great designer, we are great, arent we great? we're just so great.
everytime this man is given a mike its exactly as if he's just standing there, masturbating furiously.

that said, clint IS great, and a wonderful guy and i dont know for the life of me why he still works there. he must have enough power to overrride all the bullshit.

anyway.

Thats some funny ass shit right there :lol

I can sympathize with your situation; however, in my opinion dude, burned bridges always come back to **** you. Thats some shit better left to yourself, and your close friends.

coolade. so spill on jade.

I think he gave you guys more than enough. Sounds like your everyday office politics to me. Some people are complete assholes and some people are pretty cool, its the same no matter what your profession is.

SHE'S A ****ING PRODUCER FOR ****'S SAKE.

she does spread sheets, and looks pretty for the camera.
she didnt design SHIT.
jesus ****.

and what does LOOKS have to with design?
willw right is ugly as **** and he's a genius.
so you know...shut up.

"She has a computer science degree from McGill University and her first job was programming games for Sony. A few years later, she moved into a producer role at EA (Electronic Arts) and has been producing games ever since."

Maybe not the designer of Assassin's Creed, but she gets/deserves street-cred for being a programmer first, producer second (as in, she got into the industry through programming.) Plus she's Canadian.

Yep, that whole TV hosting thing didn't work out so good. :D

I loved every second of it... Intentional or not, that Cliffyphoria video is awesome. You should put it in the extras/bonus disc of Gears of War 2 CE. Hell, you should even make a mockumentary around it -- you're whole preparation leading up to it, the actual thing, etc. If you don't, I will... except I'll get someone to play the part of CliffyB and it won't be nearly as good.

i appreciate the insight, and by all means, keep it coming. but i would also like to mention every big corporation i have ever worked at was almost identical to what you experienced there.

i used to work at a very BIG telecom company that you might know who had some really shady business practices and who a lot of execs are now in jail b/c of. and when we bought this other REALLY big telecom company that was terribly in the hole at the time, we had to deal with that company running ours, despite us buying them and their shitty procedures being responsible for them being so badly in the hole that they had to sell themselves. half our engineering dept left in protest, the other half eventually got laid-off.

you will not believe the retarded shit that goes on, especially with the inhouse politics, in these big companies. you will likely never escape it bro.

yeah, im not a good match with big corporations.
i pretty much loathe everything they stand for.
i work indie alot. to offset, i guess.

and all that is just MY point of view.
i know a lot of people who are perfectly happy there.
artists, mostly.
designers seems to like it a whole lot less.

but ubisoft montreal is a ****ED UP place.
if you only knew all that went on during the whole Mallat VS Tremblay epic.
that shit was intense.

altho i hated every minute of it, working at the 2nd biggest studio in the word was certainly interesting.

QFT. I was going to post something like this, but with less swearing and caps.

so this is the teaser for the trailer for a game about the beliefs of the person who killed jade raymond? i didn't even know she was dead

that unkle song takes me back, though. and the game looks awesome.

im an angry young man.

Having worked in this industry for way too long I personally appreciate your integrity even if I don't know if your frustration is well founded for a fact. In my opinion it would all be a lot better if people dared to state their opinions a bit more (in a mature fashion obviously). Most people are too weak-willed.

So hey, this is the result of naming a thread after a producer. You know, because it's her game.

I know it's not her game, just wanted to make light of the infatuation with Jade Raymond

Blim seemed convinced that there were no NDAs in effect. Maybe that's limited to the US media?
US saw it few weeks back, so they had to have NDA's to not spill the beans early. BlimBlam is right there at the show and it's all cool to be released now since US sites are throwing their stuff online as well, since their NDA's are aperantly over, so what do the euro perss need NDA's for? :)

i used to work for them.
i never worked under Jade and i am thankful for that.

i have that all too rare insider's knoledge of how things work in the house sam fisher built, and thats why i dont like them very much. i dont like Jade very much either.

i had a nervous breakdown (happens more than you think, especialy at ubisoft) towards the end of my project, open season, and was fired a week later to the day.

oh the things i could tell you.
but wont.

...

pretty much everytime ex-ubi designers meet, they share breakdown stories of how all the ubi-bullshit and nonsense eventualy crushed their souls.

ubisoft montreal is hemoraging right now.
losing a LOT of people to all the other montreal studios.
more so now that eidos is in town.

First job?

I was never really all that interested in this until now- that trailer was fantastic. Definitely one of my most anticipated of the year now.

"Haha! The heat is off me! Sucks that phil_fish can't captain the squad next year though."

but thanks for the unvarnished opinion of ubi, always interesting to read ppl going off on why a former employer sucks instead of just making vague non-statements :)

who's that guy?
i dont get it.
thats right, im the one french canadian who dont know shit about hockey.

and man that was nothing, i could write a book.

Video was fantastic.

Producer talk is as annoying as ever...

But I'm quite enjoying the sudden thread twist. Didn't see that that one coming.

First job?

obviously it's his first job hahaha

im working at that place for over 3 years now and while I havent worked on open season, I was told it was a really good project for ubi montreal... at least deadline-wise. (so yeah I guess there was a lot of overtime, but welcome to the buisness)

You got a designer job right out of school?

Whaatta?

well yeah, level design.
i specialised in that in school, and there were only 2 of us in a class of 20.
and montreal always needs designers.
its nothing impressive. there just arent many of us.
most people go into animation or modeling.

and Baulieu, open season was a very good project for Ubi montreal as in: they made a lot of money from it. at the expense of the team. and since you didnt work on it and i did, i say you take my word. open season was hell. the first creative director was fired, and the 2nd one left imediatly after completion.

wow, I hate this thread for so many reasons.

phil : okay, but I dont know why you keep saying the employees are treated like shit and everybody is getting out of there when this is obviously not the case, and you havent been there for a year.

Anyways, I wont continue this "debate"
