Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

This game wil ROCK my christmas vacation!!!...People seem to forget that we only have seen some gameplay and been told about new suit, multiplayer and such...BUT we know nothing about story, menus, extras, online, and other stuff that e g makes NSMBU a fabulous package...(the challenge mode itself is worth the cost of the whole game)

In my book Nintendo is one of the greatest companies to put great semi-hidden content in their products.

Just for Wii-U (as far as i know)
- The music while downloading data changes if you shake the gamepad.
- Non disclosed 2-player mode in Yoshi´s fruit-cart in Nintendoland.
- Non-disclosed multiple levels in Luigis Ghost Hunt and Donkey Kong Crash Course in Nintendoland.

We must learn to not over analyze stuff and read to much from almost nothing.
 
I just realized this game may have Reznor! (in 3D for the first time)

Similar to the Blaarg Mole King boss in the footage, you could use your cat suit to launch attack them from a central podium.

A hub world is not confirmed. At most there will be a Starship Mario like thing. I hope to god there is no hub world. SMG was somewhat tolerable, but it was so annoying. I doubt they will put a hub world.

I'm going to assume that by hub world, they mean world map. If it were more like SMB3/SMW this time as opposed to SM3DL's straight line I'd be okay with that, and it seems to be what they're hinting at.
 
I would be happy with a small hub world if it were a playground. But the hub from Galaxy is just crappy; there's really not anything to do except go where you're going. I don't expect there to be a hub though, I assume they're going to have a world map at best.

This is huge, for me. I was thinking the other day that it would be a travesty if this game did not have one. One of my most beloved gaming experiences was running around inside and outside of Peach's castle in Super Mario 64.

And I wonder if Koji Kondo composed that tune from Mice Hills (2-1), because that is super catchy. I love it.

A hub world has not been confirmed. I would expect it to be an upgraded version of the level select screen from 3D Land.

Hub Worlds can be fun [Super Mario 64/Super Mario Sunshine], but I agree. The one is Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 just weren't fun [at all] to play around in. I actually preferred the smaller hub in Super Mario Galaxy 2 just because it made accessing the levels a lot faster, but I wouldn't be against one designed in a way similar to SM64/SMS.

However, I have a feeling we'll be getting a World Map, similar to the more recent Mario games, and I'm entirely fine with that.
 
Hub worlds' appeal has long gone. Back in the N64 days it was amazing since you're exploring something in 3D space for the first time, and in the GCN days it was whatever, but now it is just a useless novelty. It puts one large thing between you and playing the level.

I guess I would be somewhat OK with a 2D Mario world map, but I would rather have it SMG2 style where it is minimalist, but still had alternate paths and stuff.

I didn't include SM64 and SMS because at the time it was really something else to have a hub world. Now, I can still play it, but it would be better without a hub world for me.

SMG2 is my favourite hub world because it didn't really feel like one.

I'm hoping if it's a world map, it's in the vein of SMW / NSMBU.
 
I'd be okay with a well fleshed out hub world like SM64 or Sunshine. Those were fun to explore and look for secrets in. SMG's observatory is the worst imo, because it felt soo half-baked. Starship Mario was much better.

Having said that, if there's going to be a full-scale hub, we should have the option to just instantly start any world from a menu as well, after it's been located in the hub. Running around the hub, going from world-to-world is immensely dull.

Considering it has numbered stages and is built like 3D Land in most regards, the ,,world map'' will probably be exactly like 3D Land. (aka non existent).
Looking at the stage selector for the demo, it also seems that worlds will again have no overall theme or anything.

I'm not expecting anything (since all footage points towards the opposite), but for me they could slighty save face with a proper hub world in this. I love me some good hub worlds.
 
I still don't get wherein this game's challenge lies, in the normal levels. The obstacles and enemies seem mainly decorative and part of the background, something you'll miss if you don't pay enough attention. The game seems to have gotten it backwards. You accidentally walk past things whose prime objective should be to stop you dead in your tracks.

this is like DKCR:TF...the more videos I see, the more hyped I get about this game and the initial cold reaction is disappearing like a damn snowflake under the sun


I really love the transparent tubes. They look a bit like those penis enlargement pumps, but still, great idea

It's not like 3D Mario's ever gotten this right though. Goombas in Mario 64 will overshoot you the moment they begin their charge, things in Sunshine can only dream of touching you unless it's a boss, and the enemies in Galaxy barely even try, only shooting weak projectiles at you.

They're not really showing off the harder levels at this point (presumably). Also, enemies aren't generally that dangerous in Mario games, especially 3D ones. They rely more on stage hazards I think.
 
As a huge fan of Mario 64, I didn't like the Galaxy series at all so 3D World looks more like my cup of tea. I have to get a Wii U first though.

Entirely understandable.

I can definitely see the appeal of not having a hub world, but for me, they can be somewhere I can just mess around in and have fun with, assuming they're properly designed.

If I'm not having an enjoyable time going from one level to the next, that's a problem. :(

Same here. A world map that gradually changes as you progress along is great to see, I wish more developers would incorporate it.

I do hope that they have an option [similar to SMW] to designate levels that have an alternate exit from those that don't. Now I normally prefer to find the secrets without any outside help, but for some of the ones in NSMBU they were so well-hidden! I had to check the list once/twice to see which levels had a secret exit, but I found them on my own. Miiverse comments helped on occasion too.

Combing through every one of the levels trying to find that one hidden block [with nothing to draw your attention to that area] would have consumed my life otherwise. Well...not really, but it would have resulted in a broken blood-vessel [or two].

Yeah there's small and big for everyone. Small Toad is like...regular Toad really, big Toad is the one that's always looked a bit weird to me.

That's what I'm hoping for...and they know the appeal of it hopefully considering they already did the hub+menu thing for Nintendoland.

Yeah there are mini characters for all of them. Toad can only get so much smaller so they reverse the colors of his hat and the spots on it to differentiate.
 
Yeah everyone can get smaller, including Peach for the first time since SMB2! Peach being playable and the classic 90s feeling character portraits are some of the coolest things about this game. They even brought back picking up items and throwing them. It's assuring to see that this game is doing so many things right. Also Peach being playable can only mean good things for the story, not that I really care about the story, but at least it can't follow the same cookie-cutter routine of the last 100 Mario games.
 
I don't expect to see a hub world, but I really want to see them implement multiple paths into 3D World. The title with "World" in it, plus the enemies taken directly from Mario World, kind of hints at a heavy influence from the SNES game, which hopefully means an overworld as well.
 
How many worlds is this going to have? Are they going to have specific enviroments a la Mario World or are they just going to be randomly like in 3D land?

I hope this game has a lot of levels and I would like them to implement challanges like in NSMBU.
 
The victorious return of Chargin' Chuck is not getting enough attention.
 
After watching more, I got to say I'm really loving Mario 3D World.

I will admit, it didn't capture my heart like that first Galaxy trailer did, but still I'm liking what I'm seeing.

I just hope Nintendo has some DLC that is on the level of NSLU ready for this baby.
 
What are the odds of getting some kind of reward if we complete the game with the 4 characters? Was there something special in SMB2?
 
Considering the floating platforms style of the level design and the apparent lack of specific world themes, I think it's a fairly safe bet that there won't be world themes. They're likely going with the design they started with Galaxy where worlds just have a random assortment of levels, so probably a "map" similar to 3D Land. I would prefer if they made it more like SMW/NSMBU's map, but the kind of level design they go for in these 3D games doesn't lend itself to the idea of the levels being part of a cohesive world theme; they're just floating in an abyss. Galaxy you had hubs like a garden, a kitchen, and a bathroom and the levels contained within usually had nothing to do with the hub they were in, so they could do that again, too.

At least Galaxy 1 still had the right amount of narrative and the perfect intro to set the adventurous mood for the rest of the game within 5 minutes or so. Then it didn't really matter that it was just a random bunch of stages without actual theme. Not too mention that some amazing art direction and soundtrack helped it along the way (which is missing from the levels shown here so far)
Considering the multiplayer focus and 3D Land backgrounds, it's easy to predict any kind of mood/atmosphere will sadly be dropped here too. For me, it would definitely earn some respect if they got this and some good hub world in there. Or at least a proper homage to Super Mario World, meaning some neat 2D map with it's own idendity (compared to lol NSMB) that actually changes and contains secrets and shit. (Too few 2D platformers do this, I loved Donkey Kong Country 3 for this - to an extend Wario Land too)

Well, this is the return of one particular enemy character. That's cool, but it doesn't exactly make up for the fact that 3D World looks to be in every way a step down from Galaxy 1 and 2.

It makes me wonder who else from Super Mario World will return. Since this game also has a Super Mario Bros. 2 vibe maybe Ninji will be back in action. Ninji was in Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 2 so it seems like a perfect fit. I was hoping to see Wart make a comeback but the Bowser 'game over' screen has killed my hope.

Of course the game could surprise us, but from what we've seen it clearly looks to be a step down from Galaxy in terms of presentation and overall premise. It just looks like 3D Land in HD with multiplayer. I'm sure there will be some challenging creative levels in the game, but it clearly does not have that "wow factor" that the Galaxies had. Those games floored you right out the gate.
 
I much prefer this type of gameplay to Galaxy. I may be in the minority with this, but another Galaxy style game would have been a big disappointment for me.

I largely agree with you.

It's almost too bad, because I feel with only two player co-op (especially with one on TV and one on gamepad) there is a huge whack of possibilities. With four players, it's pretty obvious they can't go too crazy on level design and art design. Who knows, if anyone can pull it off it's them.

Would I be crazy to hope for levels in 3D World that didn't allow 1-4 players? Imagine levels you could only play with 2 players, 1 player, or required 4 players? I get that 80% of the game will be 1-4, but a little subsection of extra hard levels would be neat.

Personally, and I know I'm crazy, I want a forced co-op game. Every co-op game so far has shoe-horned it together so it could work as a single player game too. Fuck that, FORCE me to play with two players with true co-op gameplay.

It is definitely a step above Mario Galaxy when it comes to multiplayer. The initial "wow factor" may be irrelevant if it ends up being perceived as a better game.
