Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS: Info Collection - Dojo, Mega Man and Trailer! 2014!

The Zelda manga is less canonical than the Muppits Christmas Carol.

But of course. It just doesn't help that there's an official portrayal out there that has this happen and there's still no straight answer on it from OoT because actually giving one would just delve into the realm of creeps.

See I want to say there will be a Year of Luigi trailer but we all know there's a good chance he'll be unlockable again and those types of character hardly ever get trailers (the exceptions being the third party characters)

Pokemon reps are easily the wildcards because the Pokemon Company has so much control over them. If they were more like another Nintendo franchise things would be very different, but as it is they represent the least Samurai-influenced of all the represented franchises.
I dunno, they seemed rather Samurai-influenced here:

I'd like to bring up Sakurai's old Famitsu articles again because it's sort of interesting to see how his thought process has changed since the days of Brawl:

  • Nintendo hasn't introduced a character-based series since Pikmin (I guess by "Nintendo" he's really only counting their internal studios)
  • He says Brain Age, Wii Sports, and Wii Fit were big recent hits, but "I couldn't exactly turn the Wii Balance Board into a Smash Bros. fighter"
  • Unless Nintendo were to introduce new action games, the amount of new characters suitable for a Smash Bros. sequel would be low
  • Animal Crossing was the only character-based series since Melee besides Pikmin that he considered, but he didn't think Animal Crossing characters would fit the violent nature of Smash Bros., though he jokes about making a move set using a net and shovel
Since writing those entries in early 2008, five years have passed. And in those five years, Nintendo unfortunately hasn't created any new first-party IP. Sakurai was almost forced to work non-fighters (Villager, Wii Fit Trainer) into Smash Bros. or else he wouldn't have had any new franchises to include. Is it possible that he'll try to create characters out of the other series he's gone on record to consider important to Nintendo?

Well a gaffer posted that he expects Little Mac, Animal Crossing guy, Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, and Mii to be in the game, and this was a day before Nintendo's E3.

So yeah, Little Mac and Mii are pretty much confirmed.

Xenoblade counts right?

More likely he'll just have to look at the non big hits from Nintendo since the days of Melee for example Rhythm Heaven to Xenoblade.

They've had a bunch of new IPs since 2008 though. E-Shop characters aside, there was Last Story, Xenoblade, Zangeki, and Pandora's Tower are all Nintendo owned. They've also added characters to existing IPs that he can work off of.

The whole "Sheik now has boobs thing" (in Brawl) seems like a request from some big producer guy at NOA, so that their beloved family franchises don't have sexually ambivalent, or "perverted" characters in them.

See also Animal Crossing and Birdo/Catherine.

Futanari? That would only lead to a good nights sleep.

Lol.

I want to smack this post. Seriously.

Pikachu's expression changes when you attack it or when it attacks. Just because the encounter has a neutral face doesn't mean that's the only face it expresses.

Seriously, that whole post. I want to kick it repeatedly for being stupid.

It's not in all situations, granted. Just way too many. When dodging or attacking like in the screens I was referencing, it shouldn't have the "neutral" (but not really neutral, given that we humans see a smile) expression going on. It's not respectful to the character's history.

Smash Bros. has a history of mainly focusing on first-party stuff, though. Pokémon, Kirby, and Fire Emblem are all immensely popular series and have sold millions of copies, whereas something like Pandora's Tower is a standalone game that flew under the radar and isn't likely to be seen again. I'm not saying it's impossible -- I'm obviously not Sakurai and I can't speak to his intentions -- but those kind of second-party standalone titles seem best suited to Assist Trophies and other minor cameos. Actually, I think Ice Climber is the only playable franchise in Smash Bros. with a single game, but that was only included because Sakurai wanted a classic NES character.

What happened with Animal Crossing and Birdo?

I am perfectly happy with Charizard, Squirtle, and Ivysaur being part of a team under Pokemon Trainer as they are. I would be disappointed to see them split up into separate characters.

each character gaining another move and not being forced to switch between them

how disappointing

Plus not having stamina.

I don't care if anyone thinks stamina is a good idea - IT'S NOT. If your opponent is playing defensively your are SURE to get tired and will be forced to switch, which is incredibly easy to punish.

I've seen too many people think it was a good idea to switch mid-battle. Too easy - full-charged smash in their face.

It would be disappointing. The point of the character is the switching ability. Take that away and you just have three more characters. And switching has to have a downside. What Pokemon Trainer gains in versatility, he has to lose somewhere else (stamina, auto switch on death, etc).

this guy knows what's up.

We should atleast have to the option to either use Pokemon Trainer with all three or only use a single pokemon and give them a new b-down.

Options are always good.

In Japan, Birdo is transgender (girl with male bits). As for AC, one effeminate giraffe guy (Gracie?) was made female for the US version.

NoA loves them traditional gender roles.

Saharah, the camel that sells you carpets and wall designs, is also a male in the Japanese version. Her role is pretty gender neutral, but she has long eyelashes (like a camel) so I guess they thought Americans would consider the character female.

I don't see why you couldn't just straight take out stamina though.

Because there has to be a downside to the massive amounts of versatility. Also adds complexity and raises the skill ceiling for the character, but in a subtle way. The player has to both internally track the stamina and also plan around it.

I may end up getting a Wii U just for this game. Sorry, I havne't been staying up to date though. Is the dojo updating every day with a new little tidbit like they did for Brawl?

They could simply balance the existing mechanics for Pokémon Trainer. Have stamina, so you're forced to switch out, but make the pokeball switch animation significantly faster so switching doesn't mean automatic death.

I hope NOE is not doing the same.
NOE on seems to keep mum on the Birdo issue often seemingly switching between the two. One could argue whenever they refer to Birdo as she they are doing the correct thing and politely referring to someone who identifies as a woman female.

Gracie at least in the English script is male, but we just get NOA's script so that is of no surprise.

no, it's not as fun anymore... just Sakurai posting a daily screenshot on Miiverse.

Just needs to be balanced a bit better, but I totally agree. It's unique and fun and fully embodies what a pokemon trainer would do in real battle. There ARE consequences in the pokemon game for randomly switching your pokemon, you are FORCED to use another pokemon upon them fainting. It's incredibly faithful to the pokemon series and as such is very unique and fits the smash universe wonderfully. Just because on an extremely competitive level this can be a disadvantage doesnt mean it's not a wonderful idea for casual smash bros play.

Maybe we need to abandon the idea that every character should be balanced for top tier play and just accept that because of different design philosophies behind some characters, not all of them will work in top tier gameplay.

We're also WAYYYY too early for real dojo updates. The dojo didn't start updating w/ 1+ post a day w/ actual information until about 7 months before original planned release (9 months before japanese release), so unless Smash 4 is coming out in january, we still have a while before daily dojo updates.

Donnie, Nah

That's a shame. I remember obsessively checking the Dojo every night at like midnight for the little update. It seems like they were doing those for the better part of the year. Really helped me get more interested in the game before it was actually released. Shame Brawl was a little disappointing compared to Melee.

Sakurai said they wouldn't be doing Dojo updates this time around though
