Fighting Games Weekly | July 1-7 | Heel turns, shattered dreams, broken cages

Cause Persona 4 Arena will probably have more entrants than a new Guilty Gear or BlazBlue will; but even then, it's only the 7th highest game this year, and barring Injustice and Tekken, is beaten out by games that are all older by at least a year.
Might be too early to judge Guilty Gear, I definitely hope I'm wrong on this.
You are not wrong.
This Noel controversy is probably the juiciest thing in ages for TMZ-GAF but it's getting much less burn than I expected.
Too real to make a topic out of it. I'd rather just let the law take care of things.

What were the numbers for last year?

I actually did a count last year, which I had to find.
I'm probably off by a couple or something.
Mortal Kombat - 291
Soul Calibur V - 414
Street Fighter X Tekken - 448 (teams)
The King of Fighters XIII - 1,110
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 - 1,244
Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition Version 2012 - 1,517

The only Mexican/guy with "Sol" in his name on the brackets :P
Bring a Mariachi band that knows how to play all sorts of FGC songs (along w/ Sound of Silence) please. :-P

Marvel? Looks about as good as you can get (no names on your side), Drew being on the opposite side is a good thing, since he seems like the favorite to advance in Winners.

But seriously how much registrants for persona would have been acceptable

I think 400 is really good. The issue is more about the future because you could naturally expect a couple of hundred to drop off next time... which leaves it probably out of evo (Can't really see Atlus providing more content and they are not going to be in a money hat mood for a while either). Had it hit say 600 you could see a longer future.

But it is what it is and I hope that the finals are great. Given the timezone difference, I'll be probably able to enjoy it much more than the Sunday games.

600 would have been very very nice.

Well the issue is the Wiz said that if Persona doesn't get enough registrants for evo by his standards then that's it for "anime" games all together at the event.

Look at Soul Calibur V, which had more entrants last year, and is dead now.
You could say that most of the people moved onto Tekken, but that also has lower numbers than Soul Calibur V last year.

I suspect a greater dropoff in the move from Persona 4 Arena to BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma.

"His" standards brought back MK9 after it pulled the lowest numbers.

Mr. Wizard simply requires Atlus to shed a few pounds.

I wonder if they consider sales with the registration numbers because there's no way Persona is going to have more entrants than SCV from last year when you consider more people play the later because more people own it. I don't think SCV was drop because it didn't have enough entrants to carry it into next year btw imo

Yeah but he says a lot of things really. If 400 people isn't good enough for EVO without money hats and the like, then the FGC is doing a lot better than people think.

Me too, but I don't see a problem with that because not every game needs to be a 10 year monster. There is more than enough there to enjoy even if it is a one off. I also wouldn't be surprised if BBCP ends up doing much worse due to the higher barrier to entry, but that will depend a lot on the climate of other games at the time I suppose.

If they ever have a P5A, I really hope it has more character depth. It was fun to watch for a little while, but then the lack of options made it feel like you were watching the same thing every time.

Mr. Wizard does what he wants and then makes up justifications later.

Regardless, if this year's Evo goes well, then there will be more game slots to fill going forward so having one that doesn't pull in as much may still receive consideration.

Just got home from CEO. The most hype thing was easily Green Ace. Personally, Full Schedule as well, he's from Pensacola like I am. I'd go to this local called GCE and support the event which he organized. He perfected FChamp and then beat Flux. He got bopped by Flash so he got 13th and missed being on the grand stage by an inch (they showed top 12 pretty sure). I got a Mr N plush and talked to Dave Lang so that was cool too. Jebailey puts on an amazing event!

Paid for by CEO! :o

Mr Wizard mentioned before that any game which couldn't draw 300 players for an event the scale of EVO is pathetic and not worthy of being in the lineup. BB drew 199 2 years ago so there's no question that BB didn't deserve to be in last year's lineup. 400 should be a very respectable number; SCV drew that too but nobody respected that game in the first place and was expecting it to be nothing but filler for TTT2. So it would have been axed irregardless of how many people it drew last year.

Not if Namco had intervened.

So basically for entrants, using Busaiku's numbers:

AE (5.5% increase of 84)
UMvC3 (4.2% increase of 53)
SFxTK (39.2% decrease of 351 (individual entrants in teams previous year))
KoFXIII (61.0% decrease of 677)
MK9 (30.9% decrease of 90)

KoF blown up for shirt bait.

Understandable decline for MK9 given new game and community transition.

SFxTK just a sad situation all around because of last year's desperate attempt to keep it hype that backfired. Though still pretty good numbers compared to non-Capcom games.

Limited growth for headlining games, understandable given end of generation and greater market saturation.

Not too bad. The biggest threat is Grimey.

For Marvel:

Your lucky Helix and Drew Grimey are on the other side of the bracket. Probably just gotta worry about whoever that is from hAZmat on your side. Your biggest worry is Drew Grimey.

I see. I'm gonna need some intense grinding anyway though, I don't really feel confident enough at the moment with my execution at least.

Well you have the Superscience in your p4a pool who have a pretty good akihiko but he's in the the other side of the bracket so yeah.

Personally, what worries me the most for P4A is the fact that I'm going pretty much "cold" and on training mode alone. I don't have a PS3, so the online is dead as hell and if I do find a match the lag is horrendous, and my local scene now might as well consist of only me and one other guy (not like there ever was much of a scene). I wanted to organize some training sessions, but that doesn't seem to be happening...

EVO12 KOF 1100~ entrants
EVO13 KOF 450~ entrants

So it was true, people did solely signed up for KOF for that free T-shirt. Free T-shirt for signing up for MK9 next year??

Good games for anime that isn't Marvel vs Capcom. The gorilla plate no longer turns.

So on and so forth..

welp. I think the anime community is going to have to become more self sufficient but it honestly needs a game that can unify it's players

Are there even that many serious anime game players? It's hard for me to get people to play them even as side games to mess around in.

Yeah it was obvious. I did it myself. I almost made it out of my pool even though I wasn't awake for them because my pool had so many shirt monsters lol. It was a no brainer to get an awesome shirt for $10.
