Edge #256: Why PS4 is your next console (Shots fired, post-DRM 180)

Yup, look at the date. February 2006. Before E3 2006

February 2006, genius. ;-)

OK that's a fair point but the backlash against the PS3 started the second they announced the US price. I'm not attacking Edge and in fact I've subscribed to the magazine for well over a decade. I'm merely pointing out that they have done covers like this before and people should read the articles before crying about them.

I'm in the UK and an Edge subscriber, stuff like Killer Instinct, Forza 5 and a new Remedy game mean I will be buying an X1.

The same as Killzone means I will buying a PS4.

People like you, who buy both are in the (small) minority, therefore irrelevant to the discussion and the outcome.

This thread is reminding me how awesome Edge's covers are.

Remember this Mirror's Edge one? It was all shiny.

I had that one too *O*

Goddamn did the graphic design take a step down after the redesign.

Might sound fanboyish, but I'm considerably more comfortable with Sony or Nintendo leading a generation compared to Microsoft. The latter seems far more hell bent in putting the decisions of suits and profits over consumer rights and wishes. I get that every company seeks profits or makes mistakes, but Microsoft's tact has been apparent for more than just this next generation. Getting people to pay to play online, charging insane amounts for proprietary accessories (Wifi adapter, charging cable and rechargeable batteries, the hard drive which in the end was necessary), DRM, always online, shady PR, worse value proposition with gold vs PS+ and so on. And that's ignoring blunders like RRoD. I gave no faith in Microsoft ever putting gamers first.

Oh c'mon, this whole post reads as though Sony 2005-2009 and PS3 never happened. What about charging 1/6 of the cost of the whole console for a memory card with Vita? Spending two generations charging for an accessory just so you could use four controllers even after N64 standardised four ports? The damn vertical stand? Online passes (nowhere near as bad as DRM but still a nickle and diming policy if ever I saw one)?

I trust Sony about as far as I can throw them, even with their goody two-shoes PR so far this generation.

And no Spiderman BluRay.

Well I guess Sony were at least up front about what the Blu-Ray was really for.

I've never thought I would be so anti-xbox as I am with the upcoming console gen. But now seeing a magazine flat out stomp on it on the cover ... I guess it validates my feelings.

well only if you're a fan of their brand and wish to see a drive to marginalise other formats inc pc again.

them dominating will mean more stuff only on ps again like last gen and not on other formats and less choice.

That's a crap situation and I can't support it. This media push has helped me decide to buy neither console now.

Why would Sony's x86 based console marginalize the PC format?

Consoles didn't marginalize PC before, an unsustainable business model built around the notion that everyone needed to be making MMOs or massively popular online shooters that should all sell millions, with no exceptions, crashed the PC industry.

It's rebirth is tied directly to digital distro providing a "media" that lets a niche game sell 100k and still be wildly successful with reduced piracy, zero physical cost, and instant pricing flexibility.

PC was a healthy market for decades concurrently with consoles and as a result developed real PC-focused content that you couldn't make work on consoles. That was a good thing.

As for less choice because titles aren't on every platform, isn't that the entire argument for why Microsoft weren't actively fucking everyone over with XB1? That we could all buy PS4s instead, we'd just have to miss out on the titles they've decided to money hat?

Any line of competing products has feature disparity and people buy based on feature disparity. If the PS4 establishes market dominance and gets the lion's share of new software then it's your own fault as a consumer for buying the XB1 and expecting that software. This will happen both ways to some extent, the market dominance of one format only shifts the degree to which it happens. At some point you reach a critical mass though where not owning the dominant platform that has all the games you want to play becomes a pretty weak argument. Kind of like people who never owned a PS2 and complained about all the exclusive JRPGs it got. You can ameliorate that problem by simply buying the system with all the games you want to play.

Ah, the refreshing feeling of a new console generation. Everyone stops being so complacent and starts stirring up the shit again.

Molester baby cockroaches assemble!

Dead Rising 3 looks like a fucking mess and is removing a ton of what made the first two so popular.

What did they remove? I watched customization of crazy weapons, massive zombies dying, the timer is still in there, though not mandatory and psychopaths are back. I watched a 24 minute video and the only mess was the glorious zombies dying everywhere.

Forza 5? Ooookay. You'd be better off mentioning Mechlessfall.

Haha; great response.

Edge aren't going to sell a magazine by factually reporting on products that the Internet scooped three weeks before they went to print.
I made no reference to Edge in my initial post nor did I even hint that my comment was directed at Edge. It was directed at a poster saying journalists should only report opinion. Hell, I even made a direct statement citing the poster as one of the problems with journalism today (not holding to higher standards).

How on earth did you miss this and how did you think that was aimed at Edge? Lmfao!

Fascinating move by Edge. I don't normally read their magazine, but I am a huge fan of their Halo reviews. They're always spot on with them, especially what they wrote about Halo 3. I've read over several comments in this thread asking if Edge was pro-Xbox or something like that, and from what I've seen of their covers and their articles I've read online, they've never seem that way. Yeah, sure they were huge fans of Halo, but I never got the sense that they were biased otherwise.

Since MS rescinded their DRM decisions, which console I'm getting after I get a Wii U – PS4 or Xbox – is up in the air. During E3, I found Xbox's exclusives to be more appealing, but given what Microsoft tried to do I'm a bit weary about supporting them. At the same time, Bungie – makers of Destiny, the game I'm most looking forward to out of all that were shown at E3 – have clearly telegraphed their preference for the PS4 as a console.

Not sure what I'll end up getting (or both, eventually), but it'll be a while before I decide.

Forza 5? Ooookay. You'd be better off mentioning Mechlessfall.

this thing of downplaying games by ''it seems'' is getting tiresome.
Ryse is shit, titantfall is shit, dead rising is shit, killer instinct is shit...bah. Maybe I am a minority, but I like to wait the for final release, to judge a game.

You talk as if the Xbox One hasn't core titles.

Xbox One is well positioned in this department. The E3 presentation was pretty solid.
Just about every game platform has "core titles" and the reality for most of us is that we simply don't have time to play all the exclusive games made for all the platforms. So we have to make choices.

It's crazy to observe how trained everyone here has become when it comes to journalistic integrity (or rather, the lack thereof), and how "shocking" a cover like this is to many of you. Have you become so numb to the PR machine's constant, controlled drip of embargos and information? You guys should read Edge more often.

See, I'm not an housewife who gets beaten by her husband every single day, but forgives him each and every day because he kisses her, buys her flowers and says "I'm sorry baby, but you made me do that. You know I love you"

o.O we're talking about video game console preference, right?

Hm, I'd like to read the article and see their arguments then. I'm currently not interested in the Xbox One, but after the DRM reversal it's mainly because of price and no must have exclusives for me.

Looks like this isn't the first sensationalist cover from EDGE, so people are probably overreacting a bit. :p

Looks like an alright piece of hardware, but that blue stripe really kills it for me. I'll be going Xbox One for the superior industrial design.

Yikes. Interesting to see a publication getting out there and saying what they really feel. Certainly no pussyfooting around with a cover like that.

Edit: Oh man, this was written after the DRM reversal? Ha, wow. I'm really curious to read this.

Just about every game platform has "core titles" and the reality for most of us is that we simply don't have time to play all the exclusive games made for all the platforms. So we have to make choices.

So by saying the PS4 is the only option (like EDGE does) how many choices do we have?

In the UK the picture is much more bleak.

£429 price. To clarify, that is the same as the high end PS3 launched at. In other words, for Brits, XO is $599!!

And that's a higher price with notably inferior hardware.

The price really is the killer at the moment, not to mention a mandatory spy cam; but the weaker hardware is a blow too. Spec talk isn't just within the forums anymore contrary to popular belief.

..when it comes to EDGE readership numbers, the quality is more important than the quantity...just as it is with the Financial Times or Wall Street Journal.

I know, I've been a subscriber for over a decade.

The sort of people who read it are normally multiformat gamers, they may not buy all the machines but will certainly own more than one. I don't think that cover/article would change any Edge readers mind about what format they invest in, especially since Edge have a track record of such covers and a track record of stating the opposite when a piece of software arrives that changes the picture.

They are right.

Sony have more exclusives heading to the PS4, heavy hitting studios that have created masterpieces such as Uncharted and The Last of Us (Which is the epitome of cinematic gaming), an indie support that puts MS' to shame, superiour HW, smaller console (despite having a power brick internal rather than external), and is a whole $100 cheaper.

Then add to the fact that PS+ will on the PS4 give you a free game every month, whereas Xbox Gold Live is not, and it's pretty obvious why the PS4 is a console for gamers.

Well they could have said:

"Why you should buy the PS4"

instead they say:

"This is your next console - why the only option right now is the PS4"

They have to explain why the X1 isn't even an option with games like Forza, Killer Instinct, etc. ...

I'm pretty sure they'll say why IN the article not on the cover lol.

Not saying Edge shouldn't have done this, it's their mag they can write what they like.

But of course it matters.

I think they just want a striking cover which is good for sales, pretty sure they don't think PS4 really is the only choice given there is little in it.

Please explain the bolded part.

Wow, helluva a cover lol, really curious what that article will cover, guessing the £80 difference in price doesn't help MS any either

The problem is Sony's Online. If it is still not up to par with Live, I will have to buy a Xbone for my MP games. Playing online with friends on the PS3 is a Disaster!

Only option right now. Not forever. And you always have the choice to just ignore Edge, obviously.

Oh, you obviously don't understand how this works. Whichever console EDGE picks we're mandated to buy by our socialist government. It's like the BBC.

How else do you think PS3 did so well in the UK?

Pretty much this. Yes the cover is sensationalist but without reading the article, the harsh words aimed at Edge mostly seem to be coming from a source of hurt feelings dressed up as 'They should be impartial!'.

Have heard other previews of the game? Beyond it having awful framerate even in the demo, the guys at Giant Bomb have talked repeatedly about the current product looking like a big mess (Mind you, that's just in the current state, and maybe optimization will improve the performance). They also talked about how it has lost its comic sensibilities in favor of a more gritty, "realistic" zombie approach. They were very down on it.

Ugh. It's not the kind of leading regardless of choice such influential magazine should have.

Pretty much this. Yes the cover is sensationalist but without reading the article, the harsh words aimed at Edge mostly seem to be coming from a source of hurt feelings dressed up as 'They should be impartial!'.
It's not hurt feelings, no market should be ruled by one end all option, neither be encouraged to, is it hard to see it?

The problem is Sony's Online. If it is still not up to par with Live, I will have to buy a Xbone for my MP games. Playing online with friends on the PS3 is a Disaster!

But you won;t be playing PS4 games online with your PS3. You'll be doing it on the PS4 whose online we have absolutely no idea about.

This is truth.
