Microsoft to add Bing adverts to Windows 8.1 Search results

The source, and the horse's mouth. Mock if old, etc.

Windows 8.1 users will eventually start seeing ads along with their usual search results.
Microsoft will begin to incorporate thumbnail images of the Web pages of Bing advertisers as part of the Windows 8.1 Smart Search, David Pann, general manager of Microsoft's Advertising Search Group, revealed in a blog post Tuesday.
The Windows 8.1 Smart Search improves on the search feature found in Windows 8. Smart Search can dig up results across a variety of sources, including your PC or tablet, your apps, your SkyDrive cloud storage, and the Web. Your results are also grouped together, making them more easily accessible than they are in Windows 8.
"Now, with a single campaign setup, advertisers can connect with consumers across Bing, Yahoo, and the new Windows Search with highly relevant ads for their search queries," Pann said. "In addition, Bing Ads will include Web previews of Web sites and the latest features like site links, location, and call extensions, making it easier for consumers to complete tasks and for advertisers to drive qualified leads."

Even in their bread & butter, Microsoft continues to screw up.

Already in the apps. And if you search on the web there are ads. meh.

Whenever the Bing Desktop update pops up, I immediately hide it.

Then, when it pops up again on the next update, I hide it again.

This will be no different.

I saw this coming when they put ads in the bundled system apps. Horrendous, for something you're already paying for. Fuck Ballmer.

As someone who likes Windows 8 (much more than 7) I have to say this is pretty sad, putting adverts into a base OS feature like this (search) is just shocking. I do love how Bing ads/MS is trying to spin it to read like its a good thing for us.

I recon I'll be defaulting to the search style of Windows 8 over the new version in Windows 8.1 to avoid the adverts (just like I uninstalled the weather app).

I know microsoft does focus groups. I used to live in Redmond and got called all the time for them. They must have either:
1) Stopped
or
2) Ignored them

They MIGHT have been able to get away with this if they were going Mac OSX upgrade costs. At 100+ just for OEM? Fuck off.

Though I'm sure most people will devise mods to eliminate them, at least when searching your own god damn computer.

The ads will only appear in the full screen experience, not the side bar.

not sure what the big deal is. The fullscreen stuff will be basically like you doing it on the web, which has ads.

Doing it online is a way to cover bandwidth and to fund running the search for free.

Doing it within your own computer files is "fuck you give me money." Though maybe some people have some completely screwed up view of how consumers actually view ads, those people from the advertising division do talk sometimes like they're creating an awesome service people have been demanding.

Ads in the browser don't take up 1/4 of your usable space. This is shit:

I'd like to thank Windu for giving us the Microsoft advertising experience right here in this thread.

well they are only part of the web results, not the local stuff, so i don't see it being that much different.

yeah I don't like that they are big, but they are only in the web section of that search.

The web results are to the right of this so you don't see the ads immediately.

I still don't think it is that bad. I would obviously prefer no ads but the way microsoft implements them in thier stuff isn't bad at all. Always out of the way, i never notice them, There are some third party apps that do a horrible job at it though. Covering up content etc..

For most stuff though that fullscreen search isn't that useful, probably end up turning it off.

Man, copies of Win 7 are going to be so expensive in the coming years. I feel like I should stock up.

As stated this is only part of the full screen experience with Bing web results, which if you haven't figured it out already, is an extension of the Bing app from Windows 8. You can remove web results (and any ads) entirely if you only want local results when searching via PC Settings -> Search & Apps -> Search -> Get search suggestions and web results from Bing -> OFF. I'm finding the full screen search stuff to be mostly useless since I never do web queries with it.

So this is just a Bing app search thing only? How does this even matter then?

edit: So I just uninstalled Bing, crisis averted I guess.

If you're doing search in the same way as Vista/Win7/Win8, there are no ads. Just instant results along the side of the screen.

The ads appear if you're doing a full web search.

Here's an example if I simply search for "Word", there are no ads. Just a pane that shows up on the right-hand side of the screen:

If you scroll down past all your local content, you see auto-suggestions for web content:

If you click on one of the web results, it loads a web search, which just like every web search on earth, might show you an ad:

Seems like a classic case of misreporting and 0 fact checking by the general reader but followed by an inappropriate and disproportionate knee-jerk reaction. What is it about Win 8 that turns people retarded?

I wish another OS would just step up as the new gaming OS so I could just leave Windows and never look back.

Looked at the last few posts, seems exaggerated. Should have figured.
