Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I personally think that Far Cry 2 is one of the best first person shooters of all time.

Also, voice acting harms RPG's more than it helps them. I would much rather play a non voice acted RPG with numerous branching dialogue paths than a well voice acted RPG with barely any dialogue choices.

hell yeah dogg

Oh....MGS: Peacewalker is the best in the series and one of the best games of the generation.

I am excited for Lightning Returns

Mass Effect 3 was great

Something about this game really clicked with me. I enjoyed it a ton. It could be really beautiful too. I really can't think of a shooter experience I've enjoyed more. Not even sure I can think of an open-world game I enjoyed more.

The respawning trade posts never bothered me one bit either because combat was pretty darn fun. Good health system if I recall too.

I haven't played Far Cry 3 yet. The bright tropical setting is one of my least favorite in gaming. From Super Mario Sunshine to Crysis. I live in Florida and it reminds me of how much I hate the weather here.

For the most part, I really do not like voice acting. Especially English dubs (Japanese dubs can be pretty bad too though). I usually turn off voices if that option is available to me. Not only does it oftentimes sound bad to me, but it also takes up way too much unnecessary space, so it's a big no-no for me as far as downloadable titles go.

JRPG nuts rag on me for this, but I hate hate hate random battles. It's an archaic gameplay mechanic that has no place in contemporary gaming. Thankfully, it seems to be going the way of the dodo, slowly but surely.

If a reward was once given for displays of grinding, that is now considered wrong and it is now given out as standard.

I really, really like MGS4.

Me too.

I put all the console MGS games above MGS3. I really didn't like that one so much.

Agreed. And Killzone 2 is better than both games.

Yup.

The last good Mario was SMW. Everything since pales in comparison. Even Mario 64.

SMW was one of the last great platformers. I love SM64 for what it's done, but Mario has been subpar ever since (unless you count the Yoshi's Island games -- but I don't really think they're the same, really).

Rayman Origins is better than any 2D platformer that I've played since SMW.

I did not like Super Mario Galaxy. I have yet to play the second game but I don't think I will like that one either :/

You're not alone. I couldn't play very far in SMG before I said screw it and gave up.

I was like you guys, SMG became a chore for me after ~40-50 stars and I quit, only to come back and finish before SMG2. I still think towards the end it's not super amazing but SMG 2 was great, the momentum and pacing were just superior and it didn't lose steam for me until after I finished the main game.

If you like 3D Mario and see it cheap, pick it up, I find it quite superior to the first. It's my 3rd favorite 3D platformer ever, up there with Jet Set Radio, and the first three Sly games.

I enjoyed Dragon Age 2 more than I did Dragon Age 1. There. I said it. I will not change my opinion and assimilate myself in the majority in this matter!

NO!

Oh....MGS: Peacewalker is the best in the series and one of the best games of the generation.

It's probably my 2nd favorite MGS game. I have yet to play MGS4 and beyond though, but I will eventually.

Is MGS PW well received by fans? I had a blast with it, even though there were some flaws such as boss fights being made for multiplayer.

For whatever reason, PlayStation games, to me, have always looked better than Nintendo 64 games.

Even though PlayStation had that mosaic look going on, and N64 didn't, characters on the PS1 always seemed to me more proportional and detailed. On the N64, everything looked giant, oversaturated, and blobbish; a character's limb would be a fat tube with a dark to light gradient. The only PS1 game that I remember sharing this look was Final Fantasy 7, which began development, interestingly, on the N64.

And when it came to environments, the ones found in Nintendo's N64 games looked very simple. Just big walls and sharp corners with repeating (often blurry) textures; floors the same way, no detail. The environments in games like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon and Metal Gear Solid look meticulously realized.

I know that the Nintendo 64's got the raw numbers on its side, but it doesn't seem to matter when it comes to my perception.

GTAIV was boring as hell and after playing it on PC for an hour or so, I couldn't bare to bring myself to continue playing it on console.

Battlefield 1942 was more enjoyable and fun than BF3 can ever be.

Hotline Miami is mediocre.

Jak 2 is the best in the Jak and Daxter series, and it was a big gamble to turn the franchise on its head that I think paid off very well...love me some drastic tonal shifts, especially considering Jak1 had very little story or characterization at all...also Jak 3 was very ehh and the worst in the series (not terrible by any means, just not as good as 1 or 2)

I like Kratos, and think his character is perfectly suited for the universe he inhabits and the games just simply wouldnt work if he was any different

I think horrific violence againsts monsters and mystical/fictitious beings is okay, but find realistic human violence like COD and TLoU sickening

I would rather play a douchey character any day of the week than a bland character who does everything "right" and rarely makes difficult decisions

I think Sony is the only manufacturer pushing games forward by backing and supporting games like Journey, Unfinished Swan, and Hakumon, while Microsoft is just following the market, and Nintendo has gone sideways and decided to perfect things we already know instead of learning new things

Darksiders was the best original IP franchise to come from this gen, love the artstyle, gameplay, and graphics, some of my favorite games ever.

Also anything Playstation and camera related has been crappy since the EyeToy... you got beat by Microsoft, its okay, let it rest

Also Ghost of Sparta is the best God of War game (I myself was shocked at this conclusion after beating it)

All 3D Mario games are extremely boring. Tried most of them (64, SMG2, 3D Land), but they all have incredibly boring gameplay, practically any other 3D platformer out there is heaps better (Crash, Jak, Ratchet and others). Now 2D Mario is a whole different story - always fun to pick up and play at any moment. Still, Rayman Origins holds the crown of the best platformer of all time for me. Only to be surpassed by Rayman Legends.

Jak 2 was a ball! I loved how it was a kind of sci-fi/fantasy version of GTA and even had indoor areas/dungeons. I think the game got a lot of hate, or at least a lot of "meh" here on GAF and I can't really understand why. The game was amazing, especially for its time.

Loathe Assassin's Creed. I realize this isn't an uncommon opinion for recent titles, but I dislike ALL Assassin Creed games. The 1st, second, all of them. Combat is too easy and mind numbing, A.I is some of the worst I've seen in a supposed AAA game and the stealth is atrocious. Why even play the game stealthily if you can rambo your way through everything?

It defines to me what is wrong with the stealth genre today. Can't even really consider it part of the genre, really. More games like Mark of the Ninja, less like AC. Just...garbage

The batman games are very mediocre games and the only reason they do so well is because they have the batman name and world.

This is wrong, indefensible simply as an opinion. The fact that they are Batman games is a point against them, because most people will go into a Batman game (or any superhero game) assuming that it's shovelware shit cranked out by some D tier developer to make a quick buck.

Whatever your opinion on the quality of the gameplay, they absolutely do not get their success from their name or the name of the developers behind them.

Mass Effect 2 was the worst of the trilogy.

Uncharted is way overrated, especially uncharted 2.

The Last of Us is an average game with too much hype.

GTA is generic mindless violence with a semi-story tacked on.

GT is the worst driving sim franchise.

EA is actually a pretty good publisher.

Random comments:
Loved Jak & Daxter -- there was some characterization, mainly regarding Daxter, but nothing serious; I had 0 interest in Jak 2 or Jak 3 because of the change in tone and gameplay. Jak 1 will always be my favorite.
(This holds true for the Sly games too. 1 is the best.)

I like Kratos too. There's just something about him that clicks for me... part of it might be the fact that I loved Greek Mythology as a kid and read all sorts of books on it, so seeing those worlds brought to life and seeing these interesting takes on inserting this new character into that world and those stories... it's just awesome. Continuing on, I'm going to say that GoW3 is the best, for me. They had something going in that one where the weapon switch combo system felt right to me and the set pieces and overall epicness were just fantastic.

Darksiders is a great franchise. Loved both installments. I don't know that I'd put it as the best original IP (Dark/Demon's Souls may hold that for me), but it's up there. Particularly War, since he's voiced by Liam O'Brien (<3 Gaara).

I think the Move might be the best out of the "motion" gimmicks, though I'm still waiting for a clearanced package. I think it will be fantastic for all these HotD light-gun games.

It's probably my 2nd favorite MGS game. I have yet to play MGS4 and beyond though, but I will eventually.

I don't know how well received it was -- some love it, some hate it and think PO+ is better, I think.

I'll agree with this. I thought Asylum was going to be trash because it was a Batman licensed game. I was wrong.
I still like Asylum better than City though.

I'll agree with your ME2 statement. I think I give the edge to ME3 just because the multi was actually fun.
Uncharted 2 is definitely overrated, I'll agree with that.

Here's another one:

I will never understand why people love HL2. The game had a few okay moments, like Ravenholm, but I cannot understand why people heap piles of acclaim upon it.
In fact, this is probably true of most Valve games for me.

The Last Story on Wii had an absolutely horrible story.

Bioshock Infinite was inferior in all ways to Bioshock 1 besides graphics.

Super Mario 64 is far superior to the Galaxy games.

The only Elder Scrolls game with a decent story was Morrowind.

Assassin's Creed 1 was the best of the series.

Dragon's Dogma has the best Action RPG combat system ever developed.

FFX-2 has the best Final Fantasy battle system and is actually a good game.

If I think of more, I'll post them later. :-p

They don't even qualify as stealth games. The problem they suffer from is that the developers don't seem to grasp what it is that makes the game fun. Instead of taking the core assassination mechanics from AC1 and improving on the systems that surround those (the stealth, parkour and traversal mechanics) they keep loading the games down with breathtaking amounts of vestigial bullshit that noone cares about. All they really need to do is stop adding stupid shit to the game and focus all of their development efforts on improving the stealth and combat mechanics.

But instead we get a next gen entry focusing on a pirate character sailing around the Caribbean. What a joke.

For all the flak the story gets for being stupid, CoD campaigns are, as far as I've played, quite enjoyable. I've heard some nasty things about Veteran in WaW, though.

Crash 2 is vastly superior to Crash 3 because it's not bogged down with countless vehicle levels and it has some segments that are actually challenging. Were it not for the save system, Crash 1 would be better, too.

But CTR is better than all 3.

Halo Reach > Halo 4 = Halo 3: ODST > Halo > Halo 3 >>> Halo 2

Dishonored is an absolutely great game and I am super hyped for any future titles.

PS1 >>>>>>>> N64

Most indie games (at least the ones found on psn/xbl) are bad and/or pretentious.

Mw2 had a very very fun multiplayer and 'balance' is overrated.

Celebrating something like no online requirements for a single-player game is a testament to the sorry state of gaming and the power major publishers have over consumers. Instead of celebrating people should be telling publishers that if they try to pull any more DRM/online bullshit, they won't buy the fucking game. Here's the tricky part - actually follow through on speaking with the wallet. Gamers get the treatment from major publishers that they deserve.
