The pre-SoTD games would probably fall in your fancy then, most people would agree that his games hasn't been the same since after NMH. In Killer7 there was barely any of it and any that was there was thematic/mentioned and displayed to paint certain characters in an awful light (Curtis Blackburn in particular). Hell, that's why I liked that game - the taboos brought up there just served to make the game so much more darker and unexpected. No More Heroes had only minor tints of it to show how pathetic the protagonist was, which in context made it pretty funny and great.
Killer Is Dead seems to be mostly focused on the romance aspect in terms of the main characters, which is why I'm interested really. Suda hasn't really done any proper variation of that before. While the Gigolo Mode is really out-of-the-left-field and I'd probably not pay much attention to it if I don't have to, the hyperbole in reaction to it is pretty crazy. Considering the game's structure has a lot more in common with Killer7 than anything, that the gameplay finally looks refined and fast-paced enough to be considered palatable and since it easily feels like Suda's finally building a completely new world of lunacy, awesome characters and various themes, I'd be hard pressed to ignore that in favor of what looks to be a minor side mode.
