MS's trojan horse is the games. They're hoping the fact that Xbox has console games would push people to buy a more expensive box.
It would be utterly hilarious if Apple & Google release an inexpensive TV-box, and people buy them up because of price.

As someone that doesn't have any idea how memory is allocated to what, I am still curious....does the Xbone also need memory to power the kinect?
Maybe read MY posts before playing any sort of card. I've been consistent with my opinions from day one and they have not budged.
Thuway himself was in that other thread happy to pile in and tout how superior the PS4 would be, obviously unaware of the current situation. Which is why him being defensive in THIS thread stands out.
A simple dig through my post history shows that as far back as last year, I was happy if these consoles were minor spec bumps on the current consoles.
In fact, a dig through the threads related to THIS topic will show you I've been on "your side" in agreeing that this changes nothing and is no big deal.
5GB of GDDR5 is still HUUUGE for games. Yet I've been always painted as an Xbot for simply not joining the circle jerk since February and not hating the One like most others.
You can't say that. If the original split was 3/1 and now its 5/3 , then it helped gaming as much or more than other functionality.
Why PS4 has 8GB and Sony didn't lie. you are saying Sony lied that PS4 focus is gaming and all that RAM is for media features, that's obsured, could it mean when Sony said focus on gamers included the OS design itself, remember the first reveal Imediate, personalised, social and etc for OS to enhance gaming experience. You may hate these features but that doesn't change the fact PS4 isn't focused on gaming.

It's not. Faster memory is faster memory, period. You can use it to the fullest of its potential either in a game or in some OS task. There is no waste of any kind here. If anything it means that PS4 OS will do same memory intensive stuff faster than XBO.
Let me repeat myself from the previous thread: both machines have 8 GB of RAM. Anyone with a brain should see this as both machines having the same RAM amount. This is how it is and this is how it should be. Nothing changed. PS4 is still a better hardware because it's RAM is much faster and it's GPU is faster.

Sounds fine to me. I hope this means the OS is as smooth as in that trailer. Multitasking on the fly without lagging everything would make up for it.

I just can't grasp why a gaming console needs so much RAM?
I'm old and maybe stuck in my ways, but I am becoming irritated by all these consoles trying to be anything but a dedicated gamng console. I really hope someone steps in *cough*valve*cough* and offers a real device dediicated strictly for gaming. Maybe I'm alone, but I already have a PCS360, smartphone and tablet, I don't need another all-in-one device. I do need what I don't have, and that's an next gen console dedicated only to gaming.

As I said to someone else, you guys are so used to double speak, it's like you expect everyone else to do it. What would you rather?
1) Rumor one happens. Exec A says something about it.. Then Exec B says something that doesn't mesh with Exec A. Then Exec C tries to fix what Exec A and B said but that only made things confusing. So finally after days later get "Company" to say and official statement to clear it up backtracking on all statements.
Or
2)Exec A and B stay shut and wait for "Company" to say an official statement to clear all and every rumor before it even gets to the confusion state so there won't be a need for a backtrack.
I'll take 2 any day. Sometimes being patient is better than being hasty.
I believe they both have, to less than stellar results.
I will just say this. Back when we thought PS4 was going to have 4GB GDDR5 total, the general consensus was that it was still better than XB1's 8GB DDR3. So right now we know that they each have 5GB usable for games, but its GDDR5 vs DDR3, which is really no contest.
That being said, its still very disappointing that the OS is using 3GB. I feel its overkill, and I also feel like their upgrade to 8GB now feels a little disingenuous.

Just 6 months ago when Edge leaked the specs we were happy with 4 gigs of GDDR5 ram. Relax people, its gonna be okay.
The good thing about threads like these is that is always weed out the trolls, I'm sure mods are stalking a few right now it's only a matter of time.

MS is an OS company, their interface will almost certainly be doing a lot more than Sony's.
Pretty much every small tweak that Sony did on my PS3 UI was a big negative (WTF were they thinking with the store?), it is really not their strong point.
They are winning on every other front so far, but it is starting be more clear that they need to have the option to expand beyond the core gamer. Social integration is unavoidable

The difference in games will probably not be huge, but there is still a decisive edge there. It's not like the system is all of the sudden gimped because it will not have 7 GB of RAM available, lol. Hell, it does not even need that much for gaming.

I still want you to account for the idiocy that Thuway reacted to, to begin with. What if I was a dev and was telling you that all this is nothing but still had people ignoring my staments? You have a lot of that here and we've had several insiders as well as devs chime in.
Let me say that the hate or cynicism about Xbone has been warranted ever since the whole DRM thing came to be. It's been a swell of bad news that MSFT has been trying to patch up but let's not act like the whole reveal with DRM gate, pricing, and arrogant remarks were not the main reason to take MSFT to court.
I could have been a lot harder than that but I simply don't agree with being a whistle blower when there are bigger shots being fired than Thuway trying to make sense of a lot of stupid posts.
I can bring some names in but let me just say that you are not the worse offender of this. You just have to notice the terrible posts, then those reacting to the terrible posts, then the ones who come in and criticize the ones reacting to terrible posts instead of calling the idiots who make ridiculous statements out in the first place.
To make one more thing clear, I have no side as much as being on the side of rational thought and not jumping the gun. I have only so much information which really makes me scoff at the reaction to this news on memory allocations. Because he was right then and he's right now. Nothing has changed with regard to which is the more powerful ("Superior" if you like) machine.
Thuway's frustration is more than understandable here.
It's still an OS. Even if it's faster than the Microsoft OS, it's an OS. Unless you use these systems for browsing the web or some other nonsense, the amount of interaction with the OS where speed is critical or necessary is rather minimal.
Pretty much everything actually but since that is a mobile OS I think they'll have to rework a few things on there for it to work on a home console.
