FEZ 2 (possibly?) cancelled | Aka: Phil Fish acts like a 5 year old on Twitter

Having watched Fish on Indie Game The Movie and kept up with his public persona ever since, I don't think it's all an act. I think he has serious issues. Maybe he should take some time off, live off that Fez money for a while (I assume he's very wealthy now) and get some help.

The game could be up to 2 years out. I imagine he will just go dark for a year and then start the publicity cycle. He could even drop the Fez name, that way he doesn't have to back-track.

Who am I kidding. He loves the attention. I doubt he will last a week.

Honestly Phil needs to get some help, to act to way he does after so much success and acclaim (from something he put his heart and soul into) shows someone really fucking unhappy in life. To meltdown this easily after a few insults from someone (annoyedgamer) who really in the grand scheme of things means fuck-all to his career is just further proof of it.

What a charming guy

Racist too.

what was the racist thing?

Just because he is a developer you like doesn't mean he should be immune to criticizem, and telling westerners to fuck off I say that's pretty racist

There's absolutely nothing racist about it. He responds just as crudely to the Japanese fans who ask him questions he's already answered a million times before. And he does the same kind of humor.

Hard to take seriously with the Andy Kaufman avatar, since one of Andy Kaufman's bits was to get upset during a performance and pretend to quit.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's taking a break, actually. It'd be in his best interest to take Jim Sterling's advice to cool off twitter for a bit.

I'll throw in my two cents as well.

Honestly, I think Marcus Beer knew EXACTLY what he was doing. He knew how Fish would react, because we ALL knew exactly how Fish would react, and he proceed to record his video exactly as intended to create a giant clusterfuck.

In that sense, I think it was incredibly mean-spirited. Yes, Fish says a lot of outrageous things and has little self-control, but it's part of his personal twitter, and honestly his reaction of waiting for the actual news before reacting was the right one, and he was understandably incredibly upset at the video -- in my opinion, just as Beer intended.

Again, I'm not defending the over the top tweets per se, only saying how we need to consider the full story and how we got here, not just the outcome. In my opinion, Marcus Beer not only acted in an uncalled for manner first, but I believe did so in a mean-spirited manner, knowing what would happen. And that's incredibly sad.

Is he though?

- 5 year development cycle
- 800 MSP instead of the usual 1200 MSP for boutique indie titles
- legal proceedings with Fish's business partner
- Trapdoor's cut
- repaying indie fund
- repaying loan to Toronto government
- Microsoft's fee to get on XBLA
- Microsoft's cut
- profits split between the team

Game sold okay on XBLA (only breaking 200k) and the PC crowd waited until it was half off. I have to wonder if he really came out that well off from this game.
Fair enough. I definitely did not follow Fish or Fez throughout the dev cycle.

The only people Fish is actually "trolling" here are his fans. If you don't care about him or don't like his game or whatever, cancelling Fez 2 has absolutely no effect on you except maybe providing some amusement on a Saturday afternoon. The only people who are are hurt by this are the people who liked Fez and either didn't know about or were able to look past his idiocy on Twitter to enjoy the things he made.

When you announce a game and then "cancel" it a month later because of comments by people who probably wouldn't have given a shit about your game anyway, you're not benefiting anyone in any way and you're hurting the only people who don't care about the fact that you're an asshole. Great job.

Development on Fez 2 has ceased. The announcement was made earlier today by a tweet on the official Polytron account, which we then corroborated and verified with creator Phil Fish. "It's true," Fish told Joystiq in an email.

Joystiq didn't just rip off the tweet from his twitter account and didn't follow up.

I don't know Phil Fish, haven't played Fez 1, don't think I'll play any version of Fez 2. But if he's joking, he should probably stop the joke pretty soon. Because joystiq in general are what I consider to be 'serious journalists', and they didn't go half arse about this.

Kamiyas got talent, charm, and doesn't come off as a childish petulant dick. He's made many of the greatest games of all time.

Fish is unlikable and made Fez. It's easy to see the difference between the two.

Nope, Kamiya has this cult of personality on gaf for some reason, he's a prick too.

Admittedly, Fish is worse and Kamiya's games are better.

Fish strikes me as person who might me manic depressive. I remember in Indie Game The Movie he was asked at some point something along the lines of what would happen if he didn't finish Fez and he said he'd kill himself like completely non-jokingly. He seems to be one of those guys that has become a victim of his own success. By all accounts, the development of Fez was a nightmare and took a toll on him. I can't imagine the idea of making Fez 2 sounds like a fun idea for him. He went from just a regular dude one day to some indie darling overnight. I imagine it's hard to go from a regular person to being instantly kind of famous in the indie game scene overnight and all the baggage that goes along with it. That being said, he really does seem like a guy that takes criticism really, really hard, which is why I wouldn't be surprised if he's manic or has bi-polar or something. My opinion of the guy is that you might not like his personality or some of the things he's said, but we should judge him by the games he makes not his personality. I feel like sometimes we attribute traits to these people that we have never met and that narrative sort of becomes fact on the internet like when people call Fish an asshole or Blow a pretentious hipster. In all fairness they might be, but I've never met them in real life.

Ugh what an obnoxious attention whore, whether he's joking or not.

I see the 'Kamiya does the same thing and you like him!!' brigade is already here. Stop it with that tired defense.

Phil does it so much better than Kamiya's lame attempts, though.

As someone who was legitimately fucked by the Fez 1 save glitch (and never finished it as a result) no tears are shed by me here. As is already well documented, the completely childish and obnoxious way Fish carries himself on the internet is well deserving of all of the hate he gets. People go overboard, but Fish continues to openly invite it, you reap what you sow. Dude seems like he has some mental issues possibly in all honesty.

Falling for the bait? Trying using it for hits.

Both sites are saying they got follow-up email confirmation from Fish, so at this point it's fair game and not on them in any way.

And this is why I think it's mean-spirited to what in my opinion can only be a calculated move to rile a guy that, by most public accounts we know of, may have a genuine mental issue.

And half the posts in this thread are doing the same -- there's something to be said about someone being an asshole, but there's a line (just like the line with telling someone to "kill yourself", Futurama quote or not) that should not be crossed, and IMO that line is in the case where someone could have a real, relevant mental illness. I'm not trying to make excuses for his case or asserting that it is indeed the case -- but it's important to tread carefully given all the information we have about him so far, and Beer did the exact opposite.
