Phil Fish has Twitter tantrum, cancels Fez 2 and goes home with his ball

Ok, now that's what I feared, he's a really tallented dude and the industry could benefit from his creativity. He's still an adult making a decision and I have nothing to do with that, but I kinda wish I could talk to him and try to if not change his mind, try to understand him better.

I hope he goes back and realises he has as much fans as haters, and those people look up to him and expect his next great game (not my cup of tea, but some people really did love Fez), but if he doesn't, I wish him luck on whatever he'll do next, and for his health I hope it's nothing that will make him a public face, otherwise he'll unfortunately find out that this will happen at any business, it's not exclusive to games.

What a shame, really. I wish I could give him a hug.

I am very sympathetic to people with mental health issues but ultimately all the rest of us can do is urge them to seek treatment--accommodation does not extent to enabling and at this point anyone covering his story to comment on it is enabling. Thankfully this will be the last thread on the subject we need to have.

If Phil really is bipolar I think both threads should be closed.

Couldn't have said it better. It's funny timing, really, I just read this yesterday drawing comparisons to another Phil who was brilliant, talented, and given a free pass for his behavior until the day he murdered someone.

:lol

I don't know how he did it for as long as he did. The stream of shit this guy gets every time he does anything would be enough to send anyone crazy.

I just hope this is a joke and FEZ 2 happens because I'd love to play it.

Does this mean that Fez on XBLA is not going to get patched?

But seriously, is it going to get patched?

Yeah, patch the game before you leave,Fish.

Dont leave your customers with a broken product, dammit.

I thought you as a troll will have a thick skin, guess I was wrong.

Games industry? Abuse?

Maybe he should have tried seeing how long he would have lasted in my job. I'm currently signed off indefinitely due to stress and depression caused by repeated physical and verbal assault from thieves and drug addicts on a daily basis.

But yeah those nasty things said on Twitter must be far far worse

Pretty shameful reactions in this thread.

Both sides were being dicks to each other, but people cheering on games being canceled and people leaving game development have no respect from me.

A lot of his earlier drama's like the whole CHOKE ON MY DICK comment were cases of provoking what may have been an even dumber backlash which I didn't feel much sympathy for him, but if this is about that recent indies comment thing then yeah, he didn't deserve any of that. Dumb that something so ultimately insignificant may get him to quit something he clearly had a lot of passion and talent for, ignoring everything else surrounding Fez's release.

Still a bit confused as to Fez 2's state though, keep reading conflicting messages about whether that's dead now or still going to happen.

They don't fight back? I'm not saying they don't, I'm asking.
I'll give a polite response if I feel something warrants it, but for the most part, no, I don't. A lot of these people are my customers, and they can think what they want. Far be it from me to criticize them for it.

My first game contains a myriad of pun/jokes, including the following:

Item: Polish Remover
Description:
Hitler

A Polish newspaper got wind of this, and ran it along with my website, E-mail address, and Twitter handle. I obviously received hundreds, if not thousands, of hate mail. Even a few phone calls.

I ignored them all.

What was lashing out going to do? What was insulting people going to do? I couldn't change their minds, and they couldn't change mine. I remained silent. It blew over.

PR, man.

It's pretty simple. When Fish started making dumb comments, however long ago that was now, people responded. There's a lot of people on the internet, and thus a lot of responses. A lot of them were at least as dumb as the kind Fish might make. Fish reacts, then other people react, ad nauseum. Only one side of this exchange takes a beating mentally with each cycle, but still it continues because Fish does not seem to have the faculties to get out of it. Results in today's events.
It doesn't take much to get Fish to react. He would go nuts if someone posted "Fez Forever" on a blog post. He's going to have to deal with that sooner or later now that he's in the big leagues.

Here is my only question: If he truly is leaving the video game industry then were could he possibly go? With his skill set I fail to see him going anywhere else and being less stressed than as an independent video game developer. Maybe he will just become a small scale app developer.

Agreed. Shocking amount of haters. I honestly don't understand why people just can't let a talented developer develop their game in peace.

Whether he is being sincere or not is for another day, but this whole situation that started today is just sad really.

Very frustrating watching this scenario unfold when it probably could have been avoided completely.

And pretty disappointed by some reactions of people on here

He should continue to make games and then release them anonymously under a "Ghost Developer."

Can't take the publicity and criticism, so just put your head down and make games anonymously, could be an interesting endeavor. Then you can watch from the sidelines as people respond to your game.

If he truly does have mental health issues, I hope he gets some help.

I would have loved to play Fez 2. From the first 30 minutes of Fez I've played, it was very promising.

And now he's quit as well, it's a real shame.

Kudos to whatever his next venture is, and hope is is successful.

Some very outlandish comments here, don't really understand.

Hope he stays with the decision to leave.

Fez is the only game, in thirty+ years of gaming that I refuse to buy on principle.

Glad he decided to get the fuck out. You just know that he will weasel back in, though.
