If we had a real Xbox One AMA

The IGN article wasn't really an AMA. (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=644827)

If MS really did one, what questions would you most like answered. Realistic questions about the system/games/cloud/etc... not "why do you suck?"

I'll add valid ones to OP, and if some have been answered, I'll add the answer to OP.

GENERAL/POLICIES/E3
  • Release date?
  • Launch titles?
  • Launch "window" titles?
  • What is the long term plans for single player games that use the "cloud"? What happens in the future when the servers are shut down?
  • What advantages does the XB1 have over the PS4?
  • What advantages does the PS4 have over the XB1 (as if they would admit any)?
  • What was the tipping point for the 180?
  • Why couldn't Family Sharing and other pre-180 features have been preserved for downloaded purchases?
  • Are Azure cloud servers also available to any developer regardless of platform (PS4, PC, non-gaming)

HARDWARE
  • Will replacement Kinect sensors be sold separately? If not, is my console useless if the Kinect sensor breaks?
  • What kinds of USB drives are supported? Harddives? Thumbdrives? Size limits? USB power limits? Number connected at a time limits? Proprietary formatting again?
  • How does the HDMI-In port work? Which cable/satellite/countries are compatible? What happens when an Xbox 360 is plugged in? or a PS4?
  • Will the HDMI-In signal pass-thru if the XB1 is off?
  • Will the HDMI-In audio signal go out the optical audio cable on the XB1?
  • Are the XB1 controllers able to connect to PCs?
  • Which 360 fight sticks and steering wheels are supported?
  • How much will the headset adapter cost?
  • Any alternate colors, face plates, or customizations?
  • Mouse/Keyboard Support?

OS/DASHBOARD/FRIENDS/ACHIEVEMENTS
  • Will there still be Ads on the dashboard?
  • Will there be any way to organize friends (groups/folders)? With hundreds of friends, this seems needed.
  • Can you turn off Achievements and other notifications?
  • Can you remove games from your Achievements list?
  • In what countries/languages can people use voice commands?
  • Will users be able to create a "start" tab with only the item/boxes/content that they want to see?
  • Will users be given any control over what future updates they allow to be installed to their console?
  • Privacy Controls?
  • Will Beacons still exist?
  • Will the new "Challenges" be separate from regular achievements, or are they all lumped together?
  • Has max achievement points per game changed?
  • Can you clarify the multitasking capabilities of the system? What kids of games/apps/screens can run/show/switch simultaneously?
    [ANSWER: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=75083015&postcount=127]
  • Will the console function as normal at all times even if Kinect can't detect a user?
  • How does local media streaming work on the XB1?
  • Which audio and video codecs are supported? Can it play Music CDs? a thumb drive of MP3s? a thumb drive of movies? etc...
  • Windows Media Center Extender?
  • List of features and apps by region?

XBOX LIVE
  • Any changes or improvements to Gold?
  • Do Apps like Netflix require Live Gold? If so, what is the justification of this when every other device requires no other subscription (PC, Mac, iOS, Android, TVs, Wii/U, PS3/4, Vita, 3DS, etc...)
  • Any migration plans for things we've bought on XBL?
  • Will the offer for 2 free games every month continue on the 360 after the launch of XB1? Will it continue on XB1 as well?
  • Will all XBLA games still have demos?
  • Will full digital games have demos?
  • What are the options and limitations for users that live in a country that is not listed on Xbox Live support?
  • Pre-ordering and Pre-downloading of digital games?
  • Family Pack?
  • Does your existing friends list carry over? One time import? Sync on demand? Browser based friend manager?
  • What communication limitations do 360/XB1 accounts have? Meaning can someone on 360 chat/message/etc.. with someone on XB1?
  • Can I buy codes for games to be downloaded digitally from retailers other than Mircosoft/Xbox Live Market Place (i.e. Amazon, Best Buy, GAME, Gamestop, Walmart or Tesco)? If I can will these work in the exact same way as those bought directly from Xbox Live Marketplace?

DVR/CAPTURE
  • Is there a limit to how many videos you can upload to Twitch?
  • Can you export your videos to an external drive to use/view/process elsewhere?
  • Does the system use HDCP when playing games?
    [ANSWER: No it does not]
  • Is LIVE Gold required for uploading to Twitch? Local DVR features?

INDIE/SELF PUBLISHING
  • What are the development tools for Indie development? Similar to XNA?
  • Will the Indie SDK include Kinect Support?
  • How will Indie game achievements work? Wouldn't this lead to a lot of "Press Start For 1000g" games?
  • What is the cost of membership/tools/publishing?

I would ask them what the fuck they were thinking.

How can you alienate a customer such as myself who owns more than 100 Xbox 360 retail games, over 75 digital download titles and now wants nothing to do with your system.

You're doing IGN's job for them but let's be clear, these are questions we've all waned answered from MSFT. Not sure if they aren't being asked or MSFT doesn't want to talk about it.

I just wanted a consolidated list of questions. MS has to know the answers, the system is about 3 months from launch.

Also, we could make a similar thread for PS4.

You should start your own site! Good first thread. I'd like to know if they have any migration plans for things we've bought on XBL or if we lost everything.

A real AMA on GAF would be something. Do it MS :)

The MS rep would hit hit the "X" button in the uppor right hand corner of the communication screen within minutes of jumoing online to start fielding questions. We wouldn't get any answers, they couldn't and wouldn't handle handle our real questions.... GAF is not known for it's fluffy hand-holding questions.... We want first date action dammit...

More specifically regarding plugging 360 on HDMI: What will happen when the 2 kinects collide? The second one probably will be fine, but I think kinect 1 will have a hard time with the other kinect pulsing IR light all over the room.

Also, since apparently they can send more than just image through hdmi, can we use kinect v2 or even xbone controllers when 360 is plugged in?

And for that question:

What is the long term plans for single player games that use the "cloud"? What happens in the future when the servers are shut down?

The answer is that with cloud servers never need to be shut... And azure has plans based on usage, so even if the game community is really low they can just suspend the server when no one is playing and resume when any one enters.

The only reason I can see servers being retired are in the like of EA games, that do so to drive purchases of the new versions.

You guys do realize that it would have to be a panel AMA because there's not one person on the Xbox team that knows everything about the console. Mark Whitten wouldn't know all of the technical details. So you would probably need to have Mark Whitten, Todd Holmdahl and Boyd Multerer to be on the panel to be able to answer those questions.

AMA's in general are PR stunts that corporations and politicians like Barack Obama use to appear that they are in touch with the community. The questions are pre-screened, rehearsed and often times ambiguous.

Would you eat the moon if it was made of cheese?

If we can completely disable the Kinect, why can't we plug it out and still use the Xbox One for games that don't require it (e.g. Dance Central)?

Probably obvious answer but

Can you use the HDMI IN on the X1 without turning on the console?

I.E. If the X1 is off will the HDMI IN still spit out the video/audio through the HDMI OUT?

Would be without UI etc. of course

Will Xbox One users be able to turn off advertisements? If not, will users be given free Gold membership or other compensation in return for viewing the ads?

Will Xbox One users be able to create a "start" tab with only the item/boxes/content that they want to see? Can they customize their view to remove items/tab they do not wish to use?

Will Xbox One users be given any control over what future updates they allow to be installed to their console? Eg like Windows does?

Can Xbox One users "Block" any personal information or usage data from being sent to advertisers / Xbox?

From the demonstrations there is a "My Pins" tab where you can pin your favorite stuff. You can just land on your "My Pins" and never have to visit the other stuff. I personally would like to see an "Xbox One with Special Offers" where you get an ad subsidized version of the console as long as it isn't too intrusive.

It will probably be the same as it is today--all or nothing. It gets complicated with multiple updates and their dependencies. The typical user doesn't want to deal with this issue.

Every Microsoft device under the sun including X360 has this option. I'm not sure why all of a sudden this is an issue.

Currently, I pass my audio to my receiver via optical cable.

If I hook the XB1 audio via optical and then I plug my cable STB into the XB1 (via HDMI) will the audio also passthough to my audio receiver or will it only pass to the TV?
