Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 2: Where Pilotwings is apparently Minecraft

Hopefully we get Sonic back so we have him pose on this stage.

Just like old times.

I like the way you think

Generic Pilotwings guy for Smash?

How many Stages without a Rep from the game did we have in Brawl?

And i thought that 3DS gets the handheld staged and Wii U the console stages, Pilotwings U confirmed?

Hanenbow
Pictochat
Smashville

Battlefield and Final Destination (they don't count though).

For the latter part, I think that doesn't mean anything. Pilotwings was on the N64 and th 3DS, Sakurai simply chose the WiiU over the 3DS for unknown reasons. Also it's not official that this stage won't appear on the 3DS, we know nothing yet.
I guess it will be available for both.
And no we won't get a Pilotwings rep in the roster, maybe the Mii since if I remember right was playable on the 3DS version. Maybe.

Three right? Smashville, PictoChat and Hanenbow.

And two out of the three Pilotwing games are on a console so I don't think we can read anything into the inclusion of Wuhu Island. Also it was in Wii Sports Resort which had the plane minigame.

You know... this reminds me of a question that has been bugging me for years. When Pilotwings was revealed, I've noticed no one was apparently bothered that it featured Miis. I'm kind of shocked since I've seen plenty of people asking for a Pilotwings sequel. Was anyone here bothered by the Miis inclusion?

Asking since I'm just really curious.

true, but a Mii with a jetpack seems likely.

okay, so they have an AC rep now and the other 2 games hardly have a protagonist.

One is not even a game.
I'd like to see more stages taken from a franchise which is not "worthy" of a playable rep anyway.
Especially the retro ones (if done good, not like 75m and Mario Bros. which were abysmal).

I really think people are putting too much stock into this 'handheld games for 3DS Smash, console games for WiiU Smash' thing. I'm pretty sure its only relevant where a series has had multiple games since Brawl - Mario, Zelda, Kirby?, etc - as a way of solving the problem of having too many possible options for stages. They're not going to go "oh, there was no Pikmin game on handhelds, no Pikmin stage for the 3DS version.

Never played Pilotwings, but wasn't it with generic cartoon humans anyway? It's not like they substituted Link with a Mii in the next Zelda.

People were more than happy that it was a new Pilotwings after so long. I guess the fact it was also based around Wuhu Island made their inclusion feel more natural.

Miis are far to diverse to be limited to a Pilotwings.

SNES - realistic humans.
N64 - cartoony humans
3DS - Miis

So yeah, there wasn't really a set look for Pilotwings to follow.

A medley of these two songs remixed would be perfect for the Pilotwings level.

Light Plane - Pilotwings

Skydiving - Pilotwings
I want the short but sweet title screen jingle to be included somehow. A medley would be perfect for it.

I honestly feel the same way as you do. People worry a tad too much when it comes to Smash.

I've never played Pilotwings but I was assuming that's the case as well. So I guess that makes a lot of sense.

That reminds me. Is Wuhu Island itself similar to Pilotwings' island?

Not really but kind of, ish? Pilotwings was originally created because Miyamoto wanted a flight simulator... for himself to personally toy with. It feels like Wuhu Island was a natural evolution of this need to create a world to play in and Pilotwings just kind of fit in.

Oh, that's pretty interesting. The Mii inclusions makes a lot more sense.

I like reading about these kind of stuff, thanks guys!

Yeah it's really interesting. I read it in an interview somewhere years ago. From what I remember, it was basically Miyamoto going "Ok guys I want to be a pilot, make me a training course!". Another interesting thing I remember reading about Pilotwings was Paul McCartney really liking and praising the music of the game.

I am so happy with this stage

Classic Pilotwings level, Wuhu Island in the background...fighting on a freaking bi-plane!
Nice!

I'm assuming that the transportation ability of the plane will not be wasted and the stage will involve flying over to Wuhu Island.

Since it's been so long since a regular entry in the franchise, can we now expect a similar retro-themed stage for F-Zero? Mode-7 Mute City + 3D course floating over...

Other retro-themed stages would be cool as well

That reminds me. Is Wuhu Island itself similar to Pilotwings' island?

Pilotwings was originally just made up of a series of small islands, one for each lesson (basically level) and a really big map for the final mission. Wuhu Island on the other hand is one big compact island with a few smaller islands around it. Much like Mario's original intention was to be a character to star in multiple games called Mr. Video, Wuhu Island was apparently designed to all be a "character" that can star in multiple games which is why is has quite a varied landscape.

Weird, I always figured Pilotwings was just made to show off Mode 7.
Well the old scans when it was known as Dragonfly seem to support this. The first scan even makes this quite clear.

I don't think so, because then it'd just look a like a copy of this very stage. I guess they can reuse GX's assets again, but this time for Mute City.

Yeah, it'll be set out like the Earthbound stage on Brawl. (forgot the name, it was like a street setup).

That'd be damn awesome.

Onett. That is actually one of my favorite stages from Melee especially because I love that kind of setting. I sometimes pause the game and move the camera around to look at all of the level as much as possible. Good ol times.

Ah. Hopefully they do this for New Leaf's stage then! :D

Holy crap, I cannot WAIT to see footage of this stage, especially since we know now Wuhu Island is included (come on, island from N64 version!)

so do you think the stage is the journey from Wuhu island to the N64 setting to the SNES setting (and back)? that would be neat, if slightly jarring perhaps.

Sure hope so. Perhaps while traveling, the platform/vehicle you're standing on changes.

Wuhu Island is in few games, but I think Pilotwing/Wuhu Island would be perfect stage for Mii to represent. I think Mii become more likely to be playable character with Wuhu Island.

true, but a Mii with a jetpack seems likely.

I don't think they would give Mii with jetpack because Diddy had one.
