Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 2: Where Pilotwings is apparently Minecraft

the 3DS version looks great but in the smash 4 direct when sakurai started showing the 3DS version than switched to the wiiU version, you actually get to really see how good the wiiU version looks, like incredibly so, you guys doubting the wiiU version should look at that direct video again, seriously, i watch it like once a week

The transition from 3DS to Wii U footage in that video really is the very best thing about it. I'm like :o every time.

I like the colorful art direction, keeps things simple and iconic. Mario was getting a bit too detailed there, when in the actual games they just stick to basics. Glad Bowser finally got more color too.

I do too, but it really doesn't make it look anti-aliased. The jaggies are still there. It does, however, make it look distinct from other games, artistically, which is a good thing. (The inverse, that the Wii U looks inherently worse for not having the outlines, I disagree with, however. That version looks fine too; like a 1080p Brawl, essentially. Sure, the Mario characters are less detailed, but I think they work better that way. It's a shame the outlines aren't in both versions, but I can deal with it.)

I dunno, it does make characters appear smoother, though. Obviously not entirely, but it does a good job at making things look smooth.

I saw one bloke here complaining about the outlines saying it looked stupid.

Also, reckon this could be the last Smash game? With Sakurai's pains and issues, I can't imagine him working on anymore games after this. Would the franchise die, or would Nintendo keep Namco depending on how it does? Speculate.

I've been thinking about this since development of this title started. I'm not entirely sure what to think though, on one hand Sakurai's life force is sapped with every instillation and on the other he loves loves loves this series. Even if he loses his arm I have a feeling he will be there every hour of every day for a new title but with little to no hands on time himself.

I have a feeling this will be the last game with 10 plus newcomers and by the next game character revamps will be what's focused on.

Also this art style is great for Smash, in my eyes perfect for both versions.

I agree. Even if it ended up looking weird in some points, I think they should have tried to go with even more detailed graphics than Brawl. It'd be the perfect way to showcase the increased resolution and hardware. Going with lighter colors, makes the game seem less detailed than Brawl in some far away shots, rather than easily standing out.

It's weird because people say Brawl's color scheme was too "washed out" or w/e but I thought it was a natural progression from the realistic style of Melee. Meanwhile, the graphics here are still good but are too focused on a more generic, brighter tone.

This Mario picture represents what I'm talking about. The facial animations and whatnot are perfect for the character, but the overalls are more simplified to express the blue and thus the detail don't jump out at you like it did in Melee/Brawl. This isn't to say the game isn't more detailed in certain places (like the little braidy things in Link's tunic here), but it's not really what I'm looking for. I'm sure they'll have plenty of time to smooth out the rougher edges (remember, Pit's model was given a slight makeover during the development of Brawl).

That said, I think the 3DS game looks fantastic. If you look at video footage where it's being played from a distance, I think it looks quite similar to this famous fanart

Get_Ready_to_BRAWL__Fin__by_AbyssWolf-495x265.png

Pit's Brawl in-game model was the same from the moment it was revealed to when the game released. It was only his promotional art that was altered, specifically altered so it actually fit his in-game design--his original promotional art was simply off model period.

I've seen people mention that they think that the Brawl Mario was more detailed, but I disagree with that. I think that the detail in the textures is just as detailed (as well as higher resolution, obviously) albeit a bit more subtle in their detail.

I prefer the Wii U design.

Keep in mind that I'm no tech person, as I'm just going with my eyes. It doesn't really grab me here like it did with Melee/Brawl, so that's why I'm a little disappointed in this direction.

I know this might seem a little off-topic, but when I saw this part in the trailer, I thought the whole game would've looked like it:

In my opinion, the way it looks now is nice, but certainly doesn't look like it's taking huge advantage of the hardware the way Sakurai's past games, or even the 3DS version are. I had even more confidence in that considering Namco's part in development, but of course, I'm not gonna be focusing on the shading of Mario's overalls during the actual game. :P

2 powahfall 4 wii poo!!!111!!

But yeah, it looks nice either way.

I can see why that is, but as a graphics/tech guy as well as a fan of bright and vibrant games.. Wii U is easily better quality, as well as superior design.

when the trailer came out i couldnt even tell the difference at first, also you should take note that that is a CGI shot, dont expect any game to look like that

The game doesn't look that far from that in my opinion. Lightning and that stuff will probably get better near completion, like Pikmin 3 and TWWHD seem to show.

haha wow that sounds amazing, black out the screen and have the king with squawker lighting behind him with the credits rolling by

its too stupid so it has to be in.
Way better, a fake "GAME!" sign and the announcer yelling the winner, and if you take too long to press "A" (like people that want to watch each fucking KO or point they've got) or do something, you are sent flying off screen. Then the game goes back to normal.

I 100% agreed with you on everything

I love the art style with 3DS and Wii U, and I don't see why people want more details on the characters when people would be too busy with fighting. However there are some people that love to do photo shoots.

No. No it wouldn't have been.

I think you might be in the wrong thread. That joke doesn't work around here. Here you go!

Oh come on if sakurai did, it would have been a really good troll, and no I have never played skyrim I just know the joke.
I saw one bloke here complaining about the outlines saying it looked stupid.

After I and many others put him in his place, he swiftly decided he liked it.. :P

I love how it looks on 3DS, also gives an Anti-Aliasing vibe to it, so props to that.

The Wii U version does look nice, but not much better than Brawl in terms of detailing. One day, we'll have a game with characters as detailed as their art.

I was complaining about it, and no I still think it looks silly. It gets a pass because its a smash on handheld with less power but c'mon if the main game had outlines the yall would really be dogging it talking about how weak the Wii U is even more. There might of even been a whole threa on how silly it looks with outlines. Maybe yall really like them, I dont. I never thought of smash as a fighting game to be having some thick black outlines...this aint no street fighter 4 is fuckin smash bros. Rejoice!

Buy Vita and Playstation All Stars, and let me know how was it without outlines. I heard that people have hard time with following with the battles.

It's not just you. I have seen some people complaining about it in other threads, but hey you are one of our witness now. ;P

it also didnt help that i felt i wasent doing any moves with it, all stars is nowhere as userfriendly as smash is, maybe cause i was controlling a mostly gun user(jak and daxter) but i found it frustrating cause his moves werent very good or i wasent using them all or effectively

I just said I dont like it, it may indeed help while actually playing the game..TRUTHFACT, I like it for that reason, but being smash bros. having outlines just seem silly. Like people honestly would want it in the Wii U version..like after brawl, and melee? No way.

edit: And Idk what it is I for sure I lost track of my character in PS3 version of all stars before.

One thing I did notice with PSASBR, especially on Vita, was that I was losing track of the characters sometimes. But with Brawl, I never really had that issue. So the outlines on 3DS was a smart move.

I will admit that it looks like I'm in the minority, but I constantly play PSAS on my Vita and can easily say I never lose track of my character.

cause smash series has a consistent style and characters are made to stand out

NO, NO! I don't want it in Wii U version.

Yeah, I think there are made to "pop" more compared to the backgrounds. I think the backgrounds are generally less hectic too.

Yep, that's good thing about Smash. Sakurai know how to make it work.

I think the black outlines are necessary for the 3DS. I'm indifferent towards them. I don't think it makes it look much worse or better. But to say the Wii U version looks worse than the 3DS version is BS.

How does having vibrant colors mean it looks less realistic? So many filters used in this gen has really messed with the perception of vibrant colors.

The 3DS version is nice, but the Wii U version smashes my face. Obviously, it will start to look even better the closer it creeps to release. I dig that they both have their own styles. I like both, but the 3DS version doesn't even touch my face. It leaves my face intact so the Wii U version can smash it into the back of my head. Dual platform Smash teamwork, doing numbers on faces of all shapes and sizes. If one doesn't get you, the other will.

Oh come on if sakurai did, it would have been a really good troll, and no I have never played skyrim I just know the joke.

The thing that I hate about this 'joke' is how it blew up and got used sooo damn much. And for the fact that isn't really funny at all.

That and because it doesn't actually mean as it is. It has to do with marriage.

I just noticed these in the press site. They're the same as some daily images of late, but they're in 1080. In fact, a lot of the recent daily images are here and 1080 (uncompressed...at least they were until I uploaded them). I apologise if they have already been seen in their native resolution

I put the others here since they're quite large

Don't use Imgur for large screenshots, the site automatically compresses larger files. Use Abload.de or Minus.com.

I'm sure the outlines would of looked fine on Wii U too.

It adds character and was necessary for 3DS. I can't see why people are whinging over it.

No one is a fan of Other M.

I trust Sakurai, he will give us a cool Samus. Please Sakurai!

I guarantee you, Other M fans exist. :P

Only thing I don't like about the new Samus is how her mighty arm cannon has now been reduced to a peashooter.

Thing even looks like it could shoot peas.

But it has all the glowy lights. Everybody likes glowy lights on futuristic junk.

For some reason, I think the perforated metal is just awesome. I thought it was the best thing when I was watching the developer direct and Sakurai pointed it out. I'm easily amused.

One of the very few things Other M does at least competently was Samus' Varia Suit design. Just as long as Other M's awful designs for ZSS and Ridley don't weasel their way into SSB4 everything will be a-ok.

I really wish they had just used the Prime design, though. Prime's designs are all miles ahead of pretty much every other Metroid designs ever. But Japan has an irrational hatred of the Prime series, so...
