Dunkin’ Donuts criticized for ‘bizarre and racist’ ad campaign in Thailand

'Black is still good'

Black skin is ok for us in Thailand. These black donuts are ok too.
Where did those words come from?

See, you don't need to be a marketing genius to realize you don't introduce a product to the market by associating it with someone negative or undesired.

Why is it ok for non American societies to exploit negative traits from the States?

I am not getting. Why is any form of Blackface ok??

Because it's not blackface in the way you're thinking. If this was clearly trying to be racist, do you really think this many people would try to defend it or do you just think we are just closest racists letting our true feeling show?

Blackface is never acceptable, except when used to make a point, like in Bamboozled or that special episode of Gimme a Break.

That said, not all racial make-up is blackface.

I dunno about closet racists. I do know folks get tired of black people complaining about shit. lol.

It's okay guys, only Americans can ever be racist. Stop projecting your American racism onto the pristine racially-conscious culture of foreign countries. Also please completely ignore that Dunkin Donuts is an American corporation.
You must never hare been overseas if you think American fast food chains control foreign marketing from America.

They're still trying to make it look fashionable.

All black would have meant no visible smile. Two-toned lips would have looked odd.

She looks better black

OH SHIT I WENT THERE!

This.

Had they avoided pink or red lipstick then it would have been fine, they could have went an extra mile and changed her hairstyle with the lips. It looks like shes flaring her nose too btw.

But shes still hot. Would.

I dunno, I think it's just the straight-on angle. She does have a wide(ish) nose in some other non-shopped photos.

(Google Image Search at the risk of derailing the thread)

edit: now I want a chocolate doughnut.

They're not chocolate.

I don't know if it is. However, I do think it is in poor taste. Please keep in mind that while Thailand doesn't have a history of black face they have imported a number of America's racist ideas/behaviors and Dunkin Donuts is an American company. They should know better.

The Thailand branch is an independent franchise.

I can't speak for others, but I don't get tired when other races call out something racist when it is, but I do get annoyed when they go on racist witch hunts. You seem to be on right now, you jumped down that one dudes throat for misspeaking when it was clear it was not what he meant but it worked better for you to call him racist.

She is holding up a black colored donut.

If it where a green colored donut, she would probably be painted in green
As someone of Irish descent, I would find that racist!

Like many fastfood brands, Dunkin Donuts in Thailand is just a licensee. They bought permission to use the brand from American companies. It's not an American company.

Ex. For a long time, Pizza Huts in Thailand has nothing to do with Pizza Huts in USA. They stopped licensing Pizza Huts brand to the Thai company to enter the market themselves. The original Thai Pizza Hut rebranded into an original brand name and is competing with Pizza Huts.

I'm not from the US, I see no problem with this ad.

Would there be similar outrage if they used someone whose skin tone was that colour already? I don't get it -- they're using a dark coloured person because it's a chocolate donut. I reckon they don't have many people over there who could fit the criteria naturally, so they use paint.

The notion that imitation of another subset of people's prominent features is racist is also laughable at best.

I didnt call him a racist. Yea, it could be implied that way, but I didnt.

His choice of words, given the context of discussion, was truly laughable at the time. And I said as much. In my opinion.

The ad has some clear racial implications, and thats what we're talking about here. Not to mention, several others quoted him too.

Its all love from me, I just dislike the ad. And I know it wouldnt be acceptable in the USA, where I live.

People should absolutely complain about actual racism.

I get tired of the constant racism alarm going off when it shouldn't. If you (or anyone else) can't tell the difference between this ad and blackface from minstrel shows of the 20's, then I don't know what else I can say.

This thread inspired me to find the most racist coal miner in history.

I can't decide between these two.

The dehumanizing stares in the first one are clearly more blatant, but once you see that the miner in the 2nd has white hands...well, let's just imagine a person from Mongolia sees that and now thinks people will black skin are dirty, creating an entirely new racist culture in the twinkling of an eye.

How could these hatemongers pose for these pictures?

There should be no hint of racism for public consumption. No where on this planet.

Kinda why everyone gets cut off at the knees when they slip up. Cooper from the Philly Eagles is the only person I can remember who got a slap on the wrist, and wasnt fired from their profession. His time is coming though. A free safety gonna have something nice for him.

But you have to question everything that comes off 'funny', in fairness to all people. I feel that way.

the ad is racist, but it's the denial and defense in this thread that's the offensive part

sigh, its going to be like that?

Sure does look familiar doesn't it?
This is a board that doesn't think there's anything wrong with Zwarte Piet, so I don't know what you're trying to accomplish.

On GAF, you're more likely to get folks defending the old blackface minstrel shows than anything else.

I wouldn't call this racist, just ignorant as hell.

I hope your being sarcastic in some weird, unfunny way.

I'm curious, how can it be racist if you don't even know it existed? Racism implies intent, but how do you intend to do something if you didn't even know it's a thing.

Really?!? I find it offensive you automatically call us all racists for defending something in ANOTHER COUNTRY that's clearly not trying to be racist at all.

The issue, really, is the objectification of black skin. The ad perpetuates the idea that black skin is something weird, exotic, and unnatural, and that's why people are upset. So, it probably wasn't meant in any kind of malicious way, but that doesn't really matter, because ignorance can be just as hurtful as deliberate malice, and an international corporation should really know better.

Really though, all the denial that non-Americans can ever be racist is more laughable and offensive to me than the ad.

Asia in general is pretty known to value pale skin and think of dark-skinned people as lesser people so lets not act like Asia or in this case Thailand cant be racist. I dont think this ad is intentionally racist, as I stated before, just really ignorant.

just counter with a white frosting donut that turns people white and yellow that turns asian. who cares. go eat a donut and enjoy it

I don't think that anyone is saying that non-Americans can't be racist, but that what you experience as racist here in America (if that's where you are) is inherently and categorically different than what others experience in other places in the world. The only reason anyone is even considering this racist is because of the very finite historical context from american history. Thailand doesn't have the same context, and shouldn't be expected to.

The following image, while not racist, would be seen as *highly* offensive in other countries.
Cool-Advertisement-Picture-520x346.jpg

Is this something we should police because it is seen as culturally offensive in another part of the world? Or should we judge this by what part of the world it was intended for.

Making sure because her ears and nose are like totally different in the ad photo posted in the OP.

She'd look better with darker skin >:3
Both are 'shopped. The model shot is obvious, and the ad probably to redraw some features since charcoal black wouldn't photograph that well, nor would it go on as evenly as you can see at the PR event.
