In what can only be described as "A very strange coinky-dink", Spike Spiegel cannot do the September Comic-GAF thread. Now, I am not saying that I got a version of the Atom from a parallel world to blatantly lie in her internal monologue for several issues pretending to be a JLA member only to hide a microscopic piece of Kryptonite in his brain during one of the dozens of fights those guys get up to for little to no reason, but, my name is ElNarez, I am hella evil, and I took over this thread, so, if anyone has any objections to my way of doing things, well, things that are hard to justify will happen to you and you will be in trouble.

(Though, much like any change in the new 52, Editorial is likely to revert it by next month)

Anyway, let's talk about some GODDAMN COMICS.

MR6n8.png

+INFINITY! It's still going on! Infinity #2 and #3, Avengers #19 and #20, New Avengers #10, GET YOUR HICKMAN GRAPH COMICS HERE! Also, if you like teen heroes that haven't been murdered by Comics Superstar Dennis Hopeless, Matt Kindt and Steven Sanders bring you THE HUNT, a mini-series all about teens and stuff!
+BATTLE OF THE ATOM! It's another crazy event from the House of Ideas! Bendis has been on fire ever since he took over the mutant corner of the Marvel U, and now he takes Jason Aaron and Brian Wood with him to tell a story of future X-Men and past X-Men fighting together in the present!
+MIGHTY AVENGERS #1! It's a new Avengers book, and it's all about representing the minorities! That's super cool, right? Who isn't down for Monica Rambeau, Luke Cage, White Tiger and Spider-Man kicking ass and taking names? This is gonna be SO COOL, right? WELL HOLD ON BUSTER, because on the pencils we've got one GREG LAND. Still, you bore (beared? beard?) with his art when Gillen wrote UXM, right?
+CAPTAIN AMERICA #11! Some fucked up shit happened as Cap left Dimension Z! Some more fucked up shit is likely to happen as he fights NUKE!
+SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #17! It's terrible! Don't buy it! Slott is a bad writer! This issue has Spider-Man 2099, and he's bound to fuck that up too!
+THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #13! Marvel's Most Metal Book starts its second storyline! After going through time kicking the God Butcher's ass, Thor takes on MALEKITH THE ACCURSED! I recommend blasting 3 Inches Of Blood.

QV0uw.png

+FOREVER EVIL! The Justice League got their asses handed to them, so David Finch and Geoff Johns follow the asses of the villains of the DCU as they deal with the invasion of the nasty guys from Earth-3! Shit is so cray-cray EVERY SINGLE BOOK has been halted for a month, and here are some highlights
+JUSTICE LEAGUE #23.3: DIAL E! It's the epilogue we never hoped we would have! China Miéville and a bunch of super cool artists bring a colorful cast of villains together, and you know it will be good because they brought you such guys as PELICAN ARMY, COCK-A-HOOP and FLAMEWAR
+WONDER WOMAN #23.2: FIRST BORN! So, that guy, first born son of Zeus, he was quite cross with the Gods, huh, well, what if we got some more of that? Wouldn't it be nice? Say it is because that's exactly what you're getting
+BATMAN #23.2: THE RIDDLER! Riddle me this, nerds, who's been playing a pretty huge part of Zero Year, wears green and is the best? THAT'S RIGHT, IT'S POISON IVY no wait that's 'Tec #23.1, fuck. Here's a story by Snyder and Fawkes about some guy named Ed
+SWAMP THING #23.1: ARCANE! Some more groovy horror plant mysteries, courtesy of Jesus Saiz and Charles Soule! Arcane has been a THORN in Swampy's side for quite a while, and really the post Rotworld status quo has GROWN on me, and the FRUITS of this labor are love and PLANT PUNS
+BATMAN BLACK AND WHITE #1! Do you love anthologies? I DO. Especially when they feature guys like Neal Adams, Sean Murphy or CHRIS FLIPPING SAMNEE. (whose story is written by Howard Mackie but eh, can't win them all)

9sam5.png

+SEX CRIMINALS #1! Fraction and Zdarsky take the two best things ever, which are SEX and CRIME, and make a funnybook about it. It's about people doing sex and having crimes. And love.
+ZERO #1! Did you like those three issues of Suicide Squad Ales Kot wrote? Well, here's his new creator-owned thing, it's about spies, and all kinds of weird shit probably I mean you should read Change or Wild Children, maybe you'll get it.
+NOWHERE MEN #86! It's been a while, right? Well, I guess it's still about the Science Beatles and all their fuckups piling up on them. It's still got great design sense. I still like it. (Phew, that was easier to edit than expected) (And yeah I checked it's out on the 25th) (We've got this folks)
+SECRET #4! The long-delayed continuation of two issues of corporate espionage comics finally continues! Hickman going crazy with conspiracies! It's fun! Hopefully we get another issue next month!
+SAGA #14! I don't need to tell you anything you're already buying this book!
+FATALE #18! I haven't really been following it but the solicits say it's got more nominations at the Eisners than any other comic that's gotta count for something right? RIGHT?

9CWx4.png

+BRAIN BOY #1! Fred Van Lente and R.B. Silva tell a story about the most powerful psychic in the world. That sounds cool, right? Of course it does.
+BUZZKILL #1! It's a mini about a superhero who gets his powers from getting incredibly fucking drunk. For real. How do you want me not to feature that?
+EMPOWERED SPECIAL: NINE BEERS WITH NINJETTE! A one-shot whose title is PRETTY SELF-EXPLANATORY. Why do you need me to write a description?
+THE STAR WARS #1! Did you think the Star Wars movies were too well thought-out? Had too many good ideas going on? Do you want to see what would happen if the guy who brought you the Star Wars prequels had his way with the original trilogy? Well, that's what that is. The Star Wars, based on the George Lucas screenplay. It's got Anakin Starkiller in it.
+BALTIMORE: THE INFERNAL TRAIN #1! It's a new adventure of that guy what kills the vampires and stuff. It's Mignola. That's good right?
+CRIMINAL MACABRE: THE EYES OF FRANKENSTEIN #1! Criminal Macabre returns, and this time it's a story about Frankenstein's monster and how he needs new eyes, as you might have guessed from the title. Steve Niles! YAY!

ymY7S.png

+POWERPUFF GIRLS #1! Finally! The city of Townsville gets to be safe again in a five issues miniseries by Troy Little! It's from the TV! You know it! You love it!
+BLACK DYNAMITE #1! Brian Ash, Sal Buscema and Jamal Igle bring you a new series about that guy who does the kung-fu and all the fighting The Man stuff! It's gonna be crazy, so you might wanna get in?
+MARS ATTACKS JUDGE DREDD #1! Martians invade Mega-City One! That really sounds like a dumb idea on the Martians part, because it's Dredd's turf. They could've checked, seriously. Now they're gonna get HELLA MURDERED. Probably.
+THE OTHER DEAD #1! Did you think The Walking Dead needed more zombie animals? Well, that's what you're getting anyway. Zombie animals. Yup.
+MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC #11! hahahaha no fuck this Bronies need to crawl in a hole and die forever
+DANGER GIRL: THE CHASE! #1! It's Danger Girl! Don't let the dream of the 90s die! They chase time bombs! They wear skimpy outfits! They have boobs! COME ON!

(I couldn't find detailed september previews for every other comic book publisher, but there's God Is Dead #1 from Avatar, it's Hickman, you know it'll be nice)

I would like to state here that I think our spoiler policy is HELLA DUMB. But it's ours, so, we have to make do. I agree with the general sentiment of "Don't Be A Dick", but that's pretty much it. Plus it's not like anyone's gonna respect it. Really I'm posting it as a courtesy because I think the moment the books are out there's nothing to be spoiled anymore.

1. Discussion of newly released comics that involves specific plot details shall be accompanied at all times by the appropriate use of the
tag function.
2. Direct posting of full-page images from newly released comics using the tags is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
3. Direct posting of images or spoilers from comics that have yet to be released is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
4. Covers, solicitation copy, and/or promotional materials shall not be considered spoilers and are allowed, unless their content involves specific plot details; in those cases, outgoing links with spoiler warnings should be used.
5. The unmarked posting of spoilers related to comics will be allowed after a period of one week (Wednesday to Wednesday) from that comic's release. (NOTE: Longer? -Spike)
6. Members of Comic GAF are expected at all times to exercise common sense and polite discretion as a matter of courtesy to fellow posters. I know, tough one.
7. If you are unsure of whether or not posting something would constitute a spoiler, err on the side of caution and use the
tags.

Wait....there's a Powerpuff Girls mini series coming? Why didn't you fuckers tell me? My nostalgia demands I check it out.

If you motherfuckers don't start buying The Movement, I'm burning your HawkGuy comics, in front of your mom.

I'm doing my best, damn it! ;_;
Anyway, Black Dynamite, Mighty Avengers, DCU vs. MotU and Powerpuff Girls all starting this month. So damn good. That N52 Shazam book should be out this month, too, which I hope turns out lovely.

Wasn't I shilling it when the solicits came out? XD

Just browsing Amazon (UK) and realised the hardcover rerelease of Paul Jenkin's Inhumans is out now, I thought it wasn't out until late next month. I'll definitely be getting that as I've been wanting to read it for ages.

In honor of villains month I want to express my love for one of those things that make comic books great, the super villain team. There have been a few notable examples where it makes sense why they are together, like The Rogues, but even more so, I love the team ups that are doomed to ultimately fail because c'mon son, they are villains and someone is going to betray someone else. The Legion of Doom and The Legion of Super Villains are great examples of this.

I also love some of the really bad reasons that people become super villains; one personal favorite is Saturn Queen. Like Saturn Girl she is a telepath from Titan. You find out she is NATURALLY Evil unless in the presence of Saturn's Rings, in which case she becomes good. To beat her, Superboy flew to Saturn, grabbed some of the rings and put them in orbit of the planet she was on to turn her good, and then she turned on the rest of the Legion of Super Villains, helping to defeat them. Because comic books!

I think it and Green Team are already done. When DC released that list of all the trades and OGN's they are publishing next year, both Movement and Green Team's collections were solicited as having the first 8 issues and since a normal DC trade is only 5 or 6 issues...

So to summarize, buy Vibe!

They are all going into the fire.

Movement #3 14,524
JLA: Vibe #6 12,241
Green Team #3 11,220

This is why we can't have nice things.

As someone with a high tolerance for fun books that don't try to be the most important thing ever, Green Team was kinda sad. I don't know if it's current DC Editorial or the setup of the book or anything like that, but it wasn't really all that fun. Like, yeah, it has neat ideas and good things, but it never commits to be a crazy book, so I'm not really surprised that it didn't find its niche. And for as personal a thing The Movement was, it's also incredibly ham-fisted and kinda shit. So, I'm bummed, but not surprised. It's not a disgrace like the numbers on Defenders were.

Agreed on Green Team, disagree on Movement.

Green Team jumped the shark issue #4 with a lolwut out of left field that both didn't need to happen and made no sense. I can only assume they were told they sold like shit and rewrite to wrap up an eight issue arc.

Movement still has potential, imo, but it won't get the chance. I almost hope it doesn't "wrap up", I don't feel it could end in any meaningful way, so just leave it hanging instead.

Vibe's only real chance is as a JLA backup.

Don't doubt it. I only jumped on because of Booster Gold and stuck around because of the fish out of water premise of what they are currently doing. I hope he doesn't go back anytime soon.

I read the first trade of ASW and found it pretty good, as I was already interested in Jonah Hex. I'm tempted to pick it back up from Booster Gold's showing up and ride it out until DC kills it, too. :P

I already tried the first issue and it didn't really work for me. ElNarez put it nicely: ham-fisted IMO. Haven't really enjoyed what I've read of Simone's New 52 output and I gave her far too much time on Batgirl to prove me wrong so this was always going to get short shrift. That first issue didn't make me want to read more to be quite honest. Never mind that it also came at a time when most of my favourite new 52 series were being cancelled. Dial H was the final nail :(

Comixology is running an Invincible sale, if you've never given the book a chance, try it out. It's probably better than Vibe.

I may not agree with some of your opinions but this text had me cracking up.

Started reading my wifes Catwoman New 52 stuff. Aint gonna lie, sex scene was kinda hot.

The March/Winnick N52 Catwoman run was pretty good. Winnick had a great talent for giving March sexy things to draw, and he delivered a whole fucking lot on that, but it was never at the expense of making Catwoman a sex object. Like, she was sexual, which kinda comes with the territory, but she was also pretty smart and she could fuck you up pretty bad if you stood in her way, and it had a pretty good sense of drama and then March went on to draw Talon, making Calvin Rose every bit as sexy, and Winnick left, so Nocenti could turn the book into the boring slop it is now.

I miss March on Talon so goddamn much. He was perfect for that book, now look at the art we get! Tynion's doing good work on the book but the art just lets him down so much.

Kinda echo what my wife has told me about it. Her favorie Catwoman has been Brubakers run.

This should be in stores this month.

Also, Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus: Vol 1 is finally getting a reprint in September. It's about damn time. It's been shameful that Marvel didn't have the earliest classic Spider-Man issues in print.

EDIT: How the fuck that I miss out on a Greg Rucka book?!

BTW has Usagi Yojimbo ended?

Stumptown's through Oni Press, so it gets a little less attention. The first volume came out in trade nearly 2.5 years ago. I haven't read this second arc yet, but I think they pretty much standalone besides a little character development.

BTW has Usagi Yojimbo ended?
No, it went on hiatus while Sakai did the art for Dark Horse's 47 Ronin mini.

The Essentials and paperback Marvel Masterworks are still in print.

Are they? Maybe Amazon's just never ordered more. I have the first volume of the Essentials, but it's black and white, so fuck that. I want those early tales in color.

Daaamn, hell of tempted to go stinkhouse on the Invincible collections. The art is so damn good.

But that dialogue...

But that never-half-bad Kirkman plotting...

daaaamn

What is the best Spider-Man arc to read for someone who has never read any Spidey comics? Spider Island? Or is there a better run to start at?
