PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

I think this product is just too confusing to be successful

Not that confusing. To most people, it will just be a $100 dollar console that plays cheap games (PSONE, PSP, Vita) and streams movies. They will buy all these games on the PSN store, full stop, so there is no issue of buying a game and finding out it is not compatible. All the rest of the features which may be confusing, like PS4 remote play, touch compatibility etc etc only cater to the hardcore audience.

The Apple TV is a complement for Apple's ecosystem. Can the Vita TV stream your iPad or iPhone to your TV? No. Can it play iTunes content directly? No. This won't touch it.

Can Apple TV play Uncharted?....

Can it play Tekken 2? Ridge Racer Type 4? Fifa 14?

Can it play any games where I dont have to look down at a virtual joystick, completely defeating the purpose?

OP you should add that you can remote play PS4 games to any other TV that the Vita TV is connected to. That's a pretty big feature.

Everyone just needs to keep in mind that if a Vita game uses the touchscreen or back touchpad, it won't work on this according to the press release.

Sony needs to come up with touch screen solution fast- Vita as a controller or touch screen controller or whatever. This thing has tremendous potential but it will have trouble if not all Vita games are supported.

I had absolutely 0 interest in getting a PS Vita. Now I am thinking about downloading all the PS+ games now so I have them once this comes out :) $100? Bought.

Sony surprised everyone with this announcement. Im glad that they've expanded the influence of Vita gaming, which will bring with itself PSP/PS1/PSMobile games and streaming of PS4 games [and eventually PS3 library via Gaikai].

$99 pricepoint is awesome.

$100 for an indie machine in the west
$100 to play your PS1/PSP games on your TV
$100 to play all the latest vita games
$100 for a portable Minecraft everywhere

This is an incredibly brilliant decision by Sony, this will not only increase userbase but give developers a lot of reason to put their games on it.

Viva la Vita

They must have some sort of touchscreen solution. Just about every single Vita game uses it, even if it's just a minor implementation.

At this price, pretty much everyone will want this. I will rock P4G with this, awwww yeah!

Ouya will cry.

Because it will release in Japan first this November - PS4 and DS4 will be released in February 2014
I honestly think that's a thin excuse. They'll have the DS4s mass produced by then. Why not just release it before the PS4? I dunno, it ultimately doesn't matter. I just wish the Vita TV was getting the superior controller from the start.

I think this is the first time Sony does something so different and smart. The idea of owning this and a PS4 is sounding really good.
You can play almost all PS games with this setup. It's just so damn good, even if the output resolution is limited to 720p for the time being.

If my brother does buy a PS4 I might get this too and drag some console gaming back into my room.

I hope this turns out well for Sony, it seems rather clever of them and may help the vita gain more relevance.

It has probably been pointed out already but it is weird how 2DS and this seem to push developers towards ignoring (3d gameplay) or even discouraging (touch screen for vita) features.

As I said earlier, my hope is they allow you to use the Vita as a controller.

If this thing sells then it means more games for Vita.
We all win!
(I suppose)

yup, this is why i think its cool even if i don't end up getting one - i really want a stronger japanese AA scene going, and sony's making efforts to host such a thing, i think. always good to see

PS4 is not out in Japan till 2014 why would they get DS4 months earlier than the actual console?

sometimes as a kid id get a controller before i could afford the system just to play with it a bit and when exciting stuff goes on the TV i could be like pew pew pewwww

This is really cool. I had no idea this was in the works. At least to this extent. We own 4 tvs. The thought of being able to play on any of them is the biggest selling point to me.

I think this product is just too confusing to be successful

whats so confusing about it??...

1. its a non-portable Vita with a ethernet port and HDMI out
2. can use to play PSP/PSOne/PS2/PSVita games on your TV
3. can also be used to stream the PS4 to other TV's in your house
4. can use the netflix, or other similar media apps on your TV

i think maybe the name is tripping people up??...it probably should have been called the "PShub" or something like that

Anyone that has PS+ should be getting every game that is free added to download list regardless of platform even if you do not intend to play it now you cant predict the future.

Nope. Think of the PS4 as a media center that can also serve actual games to the PSVitaTV or the PSVita.

In theory, you could just put the PS4 in a closet with your other network hardware/servers and never look at it again, and just buy PSVTs for all the TVs in your house

This is pretty damn epic.

It will be a per game basis. You will have to buy games from the PSN store, so only games supporting the Vita TV will be there. There will be no chance of confusion. People need to realize not the entire Vita library will be available.
