PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

My only questions are:

1. Can you use a DS4 to control the PS Vita TV or only a DS3? It would make WAY to much sense for both to work natively, especially considering the DS4's touch pad.

2. Why didn't they just call it PS TV? PS Vita TV is a mouthful and sort of confuses it's true capabilities in a way. I remember Sony trademarked Playstation TV semi-recently, so perhaps they have other, bigger plans for that?

Just had a quick look at my Vita library and there really aren't too many games one can play without the touchscreen...

Even Soul sacrifice requires a touchscreen to activate a Black Rite, I guess we're stuck with P4G and Spelunky with this model then?

On the other hand, you have four more buttons to play with here. Patches incoming, I guess.

Actually thinking about it, the lack of memory in this thing is a massive oversight. They finally learned with the Vita that they need memory built in and add a measly 1GB. But this thing they force you to get a memory card as well.
Yeah, that's the only major downside I'm seeing to the Vita TV. The memory cards are pretty damn dissuasive.

DS4 works.

DS 4 support will be patched in.

I haven't posted on GAF for a week and won't be posting here for a while. I probably shouldn't even be here now because my intentions aren't all that pure.

First off: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=75509751&postcount=75

The people who gave me shit in that thread can eat it.

Also... I had the PS4 feb title list, the majority of the E3 games for MS and Sony, I was the only leaker that had the PS4 release date not in october. I also had the VR headset and now the bold Vita moves. Y2Kev can vouch that I had them specifically, and he may even admit that he didn't believe me.

Anyway, I'm done. My sister in law was murdered by her husband about two weeks ago and it's making me re-examine my life. I'm not leaving gaf forever (unless this post gets me banned forever)... but I need to get away from the petty squabling. I'm also sick of being the leak guy... and i'm also disgusted with myself that I enjoy being that person. I'm getting attention for shit I didn't do... I just have good friends in good places. That said, verendus sucks - he doesn't give anything specific and has been coasting off of what legit folk like myself have been posting. CBoaT is the greatest internet personality of alltime but he hasn't had a banner year and he clearly isn't a sony insider because it was logistically impossible for the PS4 to come out in October... so he was just repeating industry rumors. Not that I've never been wrong, because I have, and CBoaT is still the king. But I hate that i even care about this shit and compare myself.

I wrote a blog post about it here.

Also... Sony just killed it, again, with a ton of games without having to reveal any of their huge first party games. Anyone doubting this lineup is high. And in a final move of disgusting self promotion, if you haven't heard of NUad you should read this. Microsoft wants you to pay $100 so they can advertise to you... it's well sourced. I couldn't believe how much of this info was out there (though it's all from pre-NSA leaks... MS has STFU about data collecting since then). So check that out if you want to.

Back to my break from GAF. I ain't mad atcha, I just need to not be in threads like this making posts like this. And when I do come back my days of being a leaker are over. I don't want or like the attention.

I can't think of a Vita game that doesn't use the touchscreen or back touchpad. Sony have to think of a solution, regardless of how crude, to support simple touchscreen gestures on the DS3. For instance, the L2, R2, L3 and R3 buttons have no use on the Vita, and could be used to simulate general touch gestures. Then, hopefully, Sony exclusives and other games can be patched to make touch controls optional.

I could see something like that. You would have to have a cursor appear when you pull the trigger or something.

The Apple TV is a complement for Apple's ecosystem. Can the Vita TV stream your iPad or iPhone to your TV? No. Can it play iTunes content directly? No. This won't touch it.

This is where I agree

While ill probably pick up a vita TV for my bedroom this is no replacement to Apple TV for me as I use that a lot for my iTunes library and also AirPlay

Rather tempting. A more elegant solution that having an attachment to the console like the GBPlayer simply due to the size of the PS3 and PS4.

Of course Super GameBoy will forever be the best handheld to console thing simply because of what it added to the games. Of course they were so simple back then you could do something like that.

Smaller than the OnLive console?

How was that chick playing Knack in school on the Vita? Does this thing do super remote mobile play or something with the ps4?

That's what had me confused too. During the conference I saw a girl playing Knack at home on her PS4, then take her Vita to college and continued playing Knack. How is that possible? I thought you needed to be close to your Wi-Fi network. Can you really just play PS4 games on your Vita anywhere?

It will be a per game basis. You will have to buy games from the PSN store, so only games supporting the Vita TV will be there. There will be no chance of confusion. People need to realize not the entire Vita library will be available.

Except that it accepts physical Vita games as well, will it just give an error message saying it can't be played?

For #1, I'm sure the DS4 will be supported, but since the PS Vita TV is launching in Japan 3 months before the PS4, only the DS3 will be available.

The emphasis is on streaming everything.

That makes sense if it was called PS TV or something. But putting Vita in the title puts a bigger emphasis on games which need storage to download. The emphasis was probably just to get it down to $100.

1- Yes. But since the PS4 won't be out in Japan till 2014, they'll have to do with the DS3 for now.

2- It is basically a Vita with different features, since it has the Vita card slot.

What in the...?This is insane.

What about games that use touch screen though? Not as the primary input though, everything uses them for one thing or the other

tempted to sell my vita and retail games for this, since 2/3 of my games are digital

100bucks (since own a ps3 conrol) is awesome

wonder if this will support a 1080p remoteplay stream. Or at least 720p to be more TV friendly.

And if it works with Dualshock 4, presumably it'll have to have bluetooth built in, and pass that along the network - as you won't always be near enough to the PS4 to directly connect to it. (Also assuming it works across the internet like that 'day in the life of playstation' video showed with Vita)

So you think Danganronpa won't work on Vita TV? I'd be heartbroken if so :(

oh i meant that it was meant as a handheld game (instead of a console-on-portable game like a lot of psp/vita titles).

it does have some touch screen controls, but i don't know if it's how you must control the game. the vita-exclusive school mode might though, and that could mean the entire game wouldn't be playable.

I think that's what nasne is for.

By JGamers I meant importers and JP natives I'm not there silly >_> anyway lbr the JP vita line up slays the western line up as per.

We're getting Yakuza Ishin. You know you want iT

i had to ask, now that pop-GAF is international & all
and please believe i'm importing the balls off Ishin, play-asia aint bout to know what hit em

I don't think it's intended for the gamer who wants everything in one box.

It's basically an Apple TV with access to a relatively large library of games.

Diversifies the Playstation product range, low price of entry to enjoy PS games.

You could on PSP and it sucked.

I think this is the dream, to be able to play PS4 games over LTE. Also remember - Japan.

Anywhere with a viable wifi network. Welcome to next gen.

I feel Sony may have a Wii U like perception problem here. People are going to see this thing as a Vita accessory, not a Vita revision.

Upon dwelling on this a fair bit, it's a great concept...but the execution is just dire.

The majority of Vita games won't be compatible due to touch screen and rearpad input requirements.
The lack of 1080p is a massive oversight, especially if you're pushing streaming of the PS4 to another TV (though really, it's just identical to the PS4 -> Vita one, so won't that be at a lower resolution anyway?)
The lack of internal memory and necessity of the expensive memory cards is ridiculous.

Sony, you raised my hopes and dashed them quite expertly, bravo.

According to specs it is 720p, 480p and 1080i.

Apparently, yes.

As someone who has never owned a Psp or Vita before, I can say that this new device makes me quite excited.

Just to be clear though, the game selection will be fully limited to what is on offer in the PSN store, correct? That means that any Psp or Psx games not available in the store won't be playable on TV using this machine?

Remind me again please: how good is the selection of older Psp / Psx games is on PSN (EU/US store specifically)? Can I play games like Mega Man Powered Up, Maverick Hunter X and Ultimate Ghouls 'n Ghosts? How about those fabled re-released Persona games? Or Vandal Hearts 1 and 2 for Psx?

Playing Vita games is cool as well, but I would really like it if I could finally catch up on some of the older games as well. We should have a "GAF recommended Psp / Psx games to play on TV" thread when this thing is released!
