PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

A bit worried Sony is shooting wildly

We have for active platforms

1. PS3
2. PS4
3. PSP
4. PSV (which will have unique touchscreen games)
5. PSVT
6. PS Move
7. PS Eye
8. PS VR (?) (unsure if this will end up happening)
9. PS Mobile
10. PS Gaikai (which can stream its own unique games)

Its almost like they want to take a shot at doing everything from Ouya to mobile games to console to handheld...

Some overlap, others dont, and im not sure how Sony intends to get network effects for each.

They are building a software ecosystem with a variety of hardware solutions. It looks like they are steering ever closer to a 'buy once, play anywhere' situation.

I think they're trying to build their own eco system. Their whole business is in trouble so instead of trying to solve problems in each department one by one, lets all of them come together and push everything forward.

Agreed. Notice how they mention Music Unlimited and their on-demand TV/film service at EVERY conference. Creating the whole ecosystem means that people will benefit from and become attached to having their gaming/streaming/music services all on the one brand.

They already have the content - Sony Pictures, Sony Records, Gaikai, PlayStation. They just need to deliver it in a way that makes sense. And the Vita TV will make sense to a lot of people. $99 is an absolute steal for this.

*whistles* I might buy this, seeing as I have no Vita. Plus, if and when I get a PS4, it could be a sweet way to play games without having to lug the thing with me everywhere.

I haven't posted on GAF for a week and won't be posting here for a while. I probably shouldn't even be here now because my intentions aren't all that pure.

First off: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=75509751&postcount=75

The people who gave me shit in that thread can eat it.

Also... I had the PS4 feb title list, the majority of the E3 games for MS and Sony, I was the only leaker that had the PS4 release date not in october. I also had the VR headset and now the bold Vita moves. Y2Kev can vouch that I had them specifically, and he may even admit that he didn't believe me.

Anyway, I'm done. My sister in law was murdered by her husband about two weeks ago and it's making me re-examine my life. I'm not leaving gaf forever (unless this post gets me banned forever)... but I need to get away from the petty squabling. I'm also sick of being the leak guy... and i'm also disgusted with myself that I enjoy being that person. I'm getting attention for shit I didn't do... I just have good friends in good places. That said, verendus sucks - he doesn't give anything specific and has been coasting off of what legit folk like myself have been posting. CBoaT is the greatest internet personality of alltime but he hasn't had a banner year and he clearly isn't a sony insider because it was logistically impossible for the PS4 to come out in October... so he was just repeating industry rumors. Not that I've never been wrong, because I have, and CBoaT is still the king. But I hate that i even care about this shit and compare myself.

I wrote a blog post about it here.

Also... Sony just killed it, again, with a ton of games without having to reveal any of their huge first party games. Anyone doubting this lineup is high. And in a final move of disgusting self promotion, if you haven't heard of NUad you should read this. Microsoft wants you to pay $100 so they can advertise to you... it's well sourced. I couldn't believe how much of this info was out there (though it's all from pre-NSA leaks... MS has STFU about data collecting since then). So check that out if you want to.

Back to my break from GAF. I ain't mad atcha, I just need to not be in threads like this making posts like this. And when I do come back my days of being a leaker are over. I don't want or like the attention.

Sorry for your loss. Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts.
the Sentence was copied but nonetheless a sincere one from me
Thank for everything you did in NeoGAF. You're my favorite NeoGAF member not just for your leaks but for everything you post in here.
I'm sure you will be missed, I hope you sort it out.

PS Move, Eye and VR shouldn't really be considered independent platforms, more like experimental offshoots like Wii Fit, or expansion packs of old.

PSP, Vita and VitaTV are essentially going to be one and the same moving forward, and if I understand Sony's direction, this category will also end up including PS Mobile. The idea being to build a library of games that are cheaper and less high-end tech-wise but can be consumed on a variety of platforms at a lower price of entry. Backwards compatibility with PS1 and in the future PS2 games on this kind of platform also makes sense. Basically, this is what I see as the future of "Playstation Suite".

PS3 and Gaikai are the only outliers here, and may be a necessary evil if Sony truly intend to have an all access service to their complete library in the near future. And just maybe it'll pay off as a strategic investment...

So this plays Vita and classic PSN games only? This is kind of like an off shoot console then?
Psp games on psn too (unless you count is under classics :P)

this thing will change and revive vita, I am thinking of buying one before ps4 and wiiu !

Fuck just remember that gravity rush will not work as well without the vita console, well at least more will be able to play the game(I hope)

I want this.

Hope it doesn't remain a Japan only curiosity piece. I'd love to own one. Has anything been said about international releases yet?

Happy to import if not.

It's about having a solution for the living room TV (PS3/PS4), the (adult or kids) bedroom TV (Vita TV), and the portable (Vita).

Add in Cross Buy and you can buy a game once and play across all those places with saves automatically transferred. This is native, not streaming.

They want Playstation to be ubiquitous. PS Mobile is another part of this, even if it's a bit lacklustre at the moment.

Personally I think the greatest potential for this thing is in kids bedrooms. Minecraft, plus the child friendly version of Netflix. Small, quiet, cheap, no discs. I'll get one for my nephews.

I dunno. I played the game aiming by using gyro and analog in conjunction. I've done the same in some PS3 games (Killzone 3) and it felt natural. Should be fine with the DS4 since it supposedly has better sixaxis/gyro functionality

I don't own a PS3 and have never used a gyro controller so I'll take your word on it.

MGS HD Collection includes Metal Gear 1 and 2, so you'd have everything besides MGS4. Maybe you'll be able to play it over Gaikai, but who knows if or when that may happen, so it'd be best to just get a $199 or second-hand PS3.

It does? I didn't know that and I own the game, lol. Haven't booted up MGS3 yet.

I wonder if you can do ad-hoc gaming with this and vita originals.

Will someone tweet and ask Sony why the hell they're not allowing people to use their Vita as a controller so that we can play ALL Vita games on our TVs? What a missed opportunity.

I'm hoping this is feature that you could do, but they don't want to emphasize because they don't want some kind of mixed messaging. someone can easily make FUD about needing both VitaTV and PSVita to play Vita games.

well, isn't this basically confirm you can use VitaTV to display games from your standard PSVita to TV?

edit: wait, I think I read it wrong.

The worst part is that you can use a Vita as a remote while watching videos. Hopefully they add it.

So let me get this strait. Sony is basically releasing a media streaming box that can also play Vita games, PSP games, PS1 games, remote play PS4 games, and probably stream PS1-3 games via Gaikai in the future (just an assumption) for $100?

This thing is going to be HUGE! It also means much more developer support for Vita in the future if it takes off like it probably will. They better market the shit out of this thing.

This is MEGATON!

Did everyone forget about the memory stick price drop from the conference? Is that another one? Whats the new prices in USD?

Eh, it's realistically more like:

1. PS3
2. PS4 (with some games enhanced for VR)
3. PSV / PSVT
4. PS Move
5. PS Eye
6. PS Mobile

PSP is dead outside of Japan. No major Sony development focus on it at all. There will be no exclusive Vita TV software. Makes no sense at all. PS Eye only games and apps... I guess I can see it since it is more accurate than last gen's version and the DS4s have a lightbar - little more than dance games and the like though IMHO.

PS Mobile requires the slimmest of resources, but let's leave it separate. There will be no original Gaikai streamed games developed. It will be old games ported to the service, or a different format option for current games.

Yeah I was going to post this. Vita/VitaTV are the same thing since it's literally the Vita OS and innards in another box. Also Gaikai isn't going to have their own unique games that I'm aware o. With it your 99 dollar VitaTV will also be able to play (stream) PS3 and PS2 games.

I mean who knows if Sony will also keep gaika as running PC game streaming, and if that option will be available on Sony hardware, but the point of all this, and the point of VitaTV, is convergence of content, not splintering.

VR will probably be expensive and will be a luxury addition, it will have some VR only games, but just off the back of Oculus Rift development third parties. The Camera will be there in much the same way except simply to ensure parity with ONE features and to nab up some third party ports.

I'm pretty sure move will just continue to be offered as an alternate control scheme with some incredibly low investment move only titles or not make the transition to PS4.

And you're absolutely right that PSmobile doesn't even really count. The amount of internal resources to support it are virtually non-existent. There's going to be no real active development by Sony for it in terms of content, just support.

Great idea, especially since the added bonus of PSP and PS1 digital titles gives it a huge catalog. More importantly, the media aspect gives those who aren't big gamers a reason to purchase providing it has Netflix and other services.

Hopefully they will allow DS4 controllers to connect up to it to provide touchpad emulation!

Better naturally adapt than forcefully streamline. It's unclear what we'll end up with eventually, but I think they're looking into rocking two main platforms; in very rough terms:

1. "Core" gaming (PlayStation 4)
2. "Casual" gaming (PlayStation TV and PlayStation Mobile)

Clearly, PlayStation 4 will have casual experiences (perhaps equally as many, or more than hardcore ones) and PS Vita TV, likely to eventually become PlayStation TV, will bring some incredibly hardcore games. But as far as the platforms themselves are concerned, I think this will be their distinction; a bleeding edge gaming system aiming to gamers and a more undefined (system-wise) entertainment platform spanning to smartphones, tablets and smart TV boxes.

Now, where would the actual Vita (and a potential successor) stand in this is yet to be seen. I want to argue that their "Casual" platform will eventually evolve into something much greater than today's PS Mobile -- more of a successor to PSP and PS Vita than a euphemism for (just) mobile games. A PSP3 could in every likelihood aim to the core audience without being a risk -- by becoming a TV/Mobile-supporting system that can offer optimal controls, specifications and remote play with PlayStation 4.

I think it's more of an "early adopters" bundle, since it's coming before the ps4 in japan, it'll be playable with a DS4 as well, I'm sure!

That's actually a really good point. I could see them putting out a DS4 bundle version after the PS4 launches in Japan, and then only bring that version over to the West. I can see the touchpad being for the front screen by default, then use L1/R1 to activate back-touch, and L2/R2 act as the normal L/R buttons.

Move will be used together with Camera and VR headset to play VR games.

Will i be able to bring this somewhere and remote play? No need to physically bring my PS4 places?

The new day in the life commercial makes it clear it shouldn't have to be local to stream.

They have a list of Vita TV compatible games.

http://www.jp.playstation.com/psvitatv/game/psvitalist/

Apparently there are a bunch of games missing, such as Uncharted and Gravity Rush which would suggest maybe the more touch centric games wont work with it.

Not until the PS4 controller comes out anyway.

Move will be used together with Camera and VR headset to play VR games.

Were that image from that south park episode when you need it. Do we have confirmation on that? it seems gratuitous. Though I actually have no idea what 'controller' the Rift uses so maybe I'm off base. I thought it was simply a keyboard?

Did everyone forget about the memory stick price drop from the conference? Is that another one? Whats the new prices in USD?

That already happened.

32GB - $80
16GB - $40
8GB - $20
4GB - $15

64GB will probably be $160 :lol

These prices are ridiculous.

I think you are trying too hard to make that list this long.

I like this PSV TV idea but I am not sure what is the actual impact to the general public.

I see people are interested in this thing as an additional accessories to their PS franchise product, but what Vita really needs is new audience not an extension of the existing PS userbase? (although that not a bad thing that's for sure)

Uncharted is not supported either? Sheesh. Yeah. Not for me. Guess my hunt for a vita continues on Craigslist. Need it for Tearaway.

It might sound stupid but I'd really like if Vita TV could stream (well, remote play) from an actual Vita.
- to play unsupported games.
- because it would be easier than moving your saves around.

Edit: just realized it runs a 1:1 Vita OS, which means this won't support multiple users. OR they'll finally let multiple users activate content on the same Vita.

For Japan it might work great. You get your handheld and can play your games on the tv for cheap.

How did the super gameboy do over there?

64GB will probably be $160 :lol

The 64GB card is 9,980 yen, so around $100 or so.

Edit (copied from IGN):
IGN said:
Sony simultaneously announced new pricing for all models in Japan, dropping the 4GB model to 1,480 yen (roughly $15), the 8GB model to 1,980 yen (roughly $20), the 16GB model to 3,780 yen (roughly $38) and the 32GB model to 6,480 yen (roughly $65).
