PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

I will probably end up buying one of these just to try it out. Sony has a Home Run idea here, I just hope the execution is there. I am really worried about how well it will look on a big screen, but for me this will most likely be hooked up to my 32" TV in the main living room so it shouldn't be too bad.

Some exciting potential for sure, not the least of which is bringing the Vita to a much wider audience.

This is the best thing ever. That means you don't need two PS4's. Remote Play into your bedroom TV.

Genius.
This may be even better than two separate PS4's. When you have to quit playing the PS4 for some reason you can freeze the game, go upstairs to the Vita TV and continue where you left off because you're playing on the same PS4.

I guess it is not possible to have remote play while someone is playing on the PS4? And how many remote play sessions are possible at once?

You guys know what this means...

In 60 inches, baby!

You could already do that with a PS2 or PCSX2 with HDMI out on your PC.

ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

(Still not seeing who this is marketing towards since again: People that want a Roku box are probably going to go that route instead of getting this)

Releasing this in Japan first is such an odd choice. It's the territory with the least interest in general in non-handhelds, and one of the flashiest features ("Play your PS4 games on another TV!") won't even be an option for three months after release.

I know Vita is at least barely clinging to life in Japan, as opposed to its death-coma in the rest of the world, and that's probably why, it just feels weird.
Sony probably just wanted to be able to release something there before the end of the year because the PS4 isn't releasing until February 22nd.

Anyone else see this?

Yoshida is so good.

Well I'm excited. I can finally get my kid to stop playing minecraft on the computer and have them play on the TV (since I no longer have a PS3 and little desire to pick up a PS4). The computer is mine again! Tears of happiness!

I wonder how local co-op will work. Can you use your vita to play co-op if you're using the same psn account?

Minecraft and Terraria local co-op where I get my own screen ::drool::

Hopefully the Vita games look good on it. Like P4 Golden should look at least better than the PS2 version on the big screen.

But this is cool, and good for people that don't have a Vita, but prefer playing on a console anyways.

I'll pick this up probably if Vita gets some more games I want.

Just got up saw this I'm in day one for the US. Loved my Vita but couldn't play for long periods of time got hand cramps. This is so awesome.

It will be interesting to see how this is implemented. Will Netflix output at 1080p even though the Vita doesn't?

Will there be a way to stream what I'm playing on my Vita to the Vita TV?

You know now that I think of it this is what Nintendo should have done, basic set top box to play old games and low res new games. Drop that gamepad and go this route. They would have been much more profitable. Sony is killing it really have to give them credit for trying new things even when they fail (yes you PSPGO).

This is so bought. $100 is a fine price to pay to not have to lug my PS4 around the house (even if it is tiny, I don't want to bother reconnecting stuff).

Hell, now I'll have the option of playing FFXIV in bed on my TV or my Vita.

Erm noticing alot of posts saying Touchscreen games are not supported:

http://www.jp.playstation.com/psvitatv/faq/

It's specifically stated in the faq that there is a manner of touchscreen control. By holding either L3 or R3 a pointer will appear on the screen which you can manipulate using the DS3.
Good luck trying to use that in gameplay situations. It does give hope to Wipeout eventually working though because it only needs touch in the menus.

They just eliminated the need for a ton of people to own the Vita...

That depends. I personally buy portable gaming devices to be portable, and home consoles to play at home. I do 99% of my Vita playing on the go. Either on the bus to work, or in the office during breaks. Not everybody looks at their portable like just another home console. Some people actually get them for their intended purpose: gaming onthe go.

With that said, I'll definitely pick up one of these, because it's pretty cool, and who knows, maybe I'll play my Vita at home more often, but that's probably unlikely. I barely play my PS3 and PC at home as it is, which was the main reason why I got a portable to begin with (and I'll be adding a 3DS to my portable repertoire next year).

Just waking up to all this news. This is a PERFECT bedroom device and a very smart strategic move on Sony's part, as it gives them an inroad to te type of market everyone expects Apple and Amazon to get into.

Been reading about this all morning and now that I am home all I can say is awesome, I love these little compact units for cheap, I love my ouya even though it could be a ton better, my iphone and apple tv get a fair bit of use for streaming so a vita box would be great to me to play some of the vita games I have interest in and for future use with a ps4.

Want.

It's a great size too, looks slick.

Completely digging this, a great great idea. You can see this thing selling really well, hey a $100 new playstation!, if marketed correctly to the casual crowd. In for day one.

I was more surprised by the fact that Andrew House speaks Japanese fluently than the actual announcement lol.

But seriously this is amazing.

If I understand this correctly: PS4 is in the living room. PS Vita TV is in the bedroom. I can play on my PS4 from the bedroom? Like, everything is there?

Games that require touch input won't be playable on the Vita TV.

Yeah, just realized that. That means some of the games that have me considering a vita purchase and which I already have on PS+ like Gravity Rush wont work. I guess I'll have to stick to the normal vita when I finally decide to get one.
I hope people don't end up buying games for this thing that don't work on it.

I don't see how the factors you listed above suddenly make it harder to justify making games specifically for the Vita ecosystem. The only thing this does is make touchscreen support questionable, and for that I'd still wait to see if the packed-in DS3 isn't replaced with a DS4 in the future to remedy that before discounting touchscreen support completely. Other than that, you have no less reason to make Vita-specific games now than you did before - if this takes off in a notable way, I'd say it gives more reason to, in fact.

Why would you make a game just for Vita only though now? There will never be more of them than PS3 and the games are going to have to work on a 50" TV with a DS3.

The reasons to make exclusive Vita games are as far as I can see, gone. Like I said, to release a device like this it is worth it too me, i'll probably buy one.

it's still going to be psvita resolution...

The only downside but hey, lately I have been playing my DC via VGA on my 26" tv in 640x480 and it still looks great, the vita will match that and more in quality on a tv.

The ouya can do 1080p but this is where the ouya also suffers, so much performance is lost because the ouya will scale everything to 1080 THEN DOWNSCALE IT to your tv settings, it's backwards and it makes the ouya weaker then it should be.

This is very cool, and I'll likely get this rather than a Vita.

I like the idea of a Vita but know I'll hardly use it. This I can see myself using quite a bit.

It's odd that this essentially eliminates my need for a second PS4 though.

Games that require touch input aren't compatible? Isn't that, like, almost every game? How fucking stupid is Sony for not coming up with a workaround for such a glaringly obvious issue?

I love this personally...

...but you know what this just did? It killed all future touch control in game development.

I think I'm OK with that. I like 'pure' touchscreen gaming, but I don't really get on with switching between buttons and a touchscreen. Always feels weird on the Vita and I end up cursing the smudges it leaves behind.

But what happens if my PS Vita TV TV is occupied and i want to play my PS Vita TV via remote play on my PS4 TV? Will i be able to gaikai a PS1 classic to my PS Vita TV and remote it to my PS4? Will it be 1080/60?

upcoming dualshock 4 support for VitaTV, what a coincidence that DS4 have touch pad huh, also few games use the rear touch pad.
