PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

With Vita and PSP games now officially playable through a home console, I wonder if Sony will finally wise up and bring that compatibility to PS3/PS4.

I will be buying at least 2 of these.... 4 if the remote play works worth a damn.

Hell if it really works over the internet, I will buy a couple for family members houses I visit often.

This kind of invalidates the need for that since HDMI out would still lock you into using your Vita as the controller so you would need to sit a little closer as opposed to this which uses a dedicated and small box with wireless DS3/DS4 support.

I already answered in the other post but this invalidates even needing the Vita with HDMI out. This is the Vita with HDMI out right here and it supports pads. You can use the TV as player 1 and the Vita as player 2 now. So this essentially gives you local multiplayer with Vita/VitaTV working as separate units.

This does a lot for me and I will be getting a PS4 day 1 and got a First Edition Vita last year.

For those who've never wanted to buy a PSP/PSV or any portable device, this will serve as a bridge that will let you enjoy those games and PS4 remote play alongside all the media functions. It;s a very attractive proposition and I already have a Vita and will own a PS4 soon.

I'm not taking anything away from VitaTV, in my scenario this doesn't give me option to play on the go when holidaying, plug the vita straight into hotel tv at the end of and play with the DualShock

Sec guys I want 2 Vita's for the same price as the new revised one

the revised vita is a less expensive system to manufacture than the original vita. it comes with a memory stick, but the vita tv doesn't. they could have just had the two machines in one package and sold them at a loss.

and the vita tv isn't much of a second vita seeing as a lot of the games won't work for it.

Not a bad idea Sony! If they price and market it right it should do well but I wonder if it will just cannibalize the Vita userbase?

Playing big screen Soul Sacrifice could be very cool!

Both the Vita TV and new Vita have 1GB internal storage.

This pretty much says it all..

The second reason I'm excited about Vita TV is that it invalidates all the excuses given by people who, for whatever reason, dislike playing games on handhelds. Finally, I'll be able to share the joy of some of my favorite games like Corpse Party and Trails in the Sky with my friend who enjoys story-heavy Japanese games but suffers eye strain when looking at a small screen; finally, my JRPG-loving friend who has a curious and unexplained aversion to all things handheld will have a wealth of "new" (to him, anyway) games to play. I'm looking forward to Vita TV as much for the fact that it will open up the PSP and Vita's incredible library of games to people who otherwise wouldn't have touched them as anything else. I can't wait to start talking about these games with my friends who are yet to encounter these joyful experiences.

If this isn't announced for North America I will be crushed. I want to buy 4 or 5 of these to give away for the Holidays, plus one for myself.

I want it more than a PS4 right now...

Unlike the PS4, this is something small enough to fit into your coat pocket. The inconvenience of shuffling it around isn't the same.
If I have to move cables it might as well be a PS4 so I would need to buy another power adapter and HDMI to keep plugged in behind the extra TV. The whole point of the one device streaming around the house is that is just works. It stays there and never moves. $100 is a fantastic price for a micro console and a Vita (plus a decent media player). It just isn't in that $40 buy three impulse range.

Thats not requiring two to do remote play though is it. Thats two if you want two.

Of course not but in this real life scenario (the one they demonstrated in that video). One would probably need 2 if they don't want to move devices around (which is the whole point to begin with)

I'm more of a sony ecosystem outsider (I do own a PS3, however) so in my unbiased opinion, they nailed it with this thing. Perfect product at the perfect time and price.

Sony seems to really be bringing it in a big way with the PS4 and now this. See, this is why competition is GRAND.

Can you do cloud based games saves - so you play on a Vita and that cloud save is synced to the VitaTV and vice versa - like Apple's Photostream?

I think it's a branding thing, the vita name was stuck as a portable device. Personally I think it's a good idea to expand it to a family of devices that basically means you're playing on PlayStation low end or PS4 companion.

Yes.

With PS+ you can saves your games to the cloud. So you'd play on Vita, upload to the cloud, boot up VTV and download your save and carry on.

Uh, import it?

Region free, english menus, runs on 5v so you can power it via USB, and it's only bloody £60.

You'd get it by Christmas.

Oh man....

So I Pre ordered a ps4 as soon as they were available, about 3 weeks ago I canceled my cable and got a fast Internet subcrisption... My sister has twc, I use her login details to watch espn, hbogo on the 360.. I subscribe to amazon prime and have Netflix.. Last week I was spthinking maybe I made a mistake and should of preordered a xbone because those streaming services are important to me now that I have no cable tv..

This could solve all my problems (if hbogo and espn do becom available), play awesome vita games ANDDDD stream ps4 games to my computer room?!

Oh man....

Yeah, because they removed the screen. I'm going to assume that everything else is the exact damn same.

It is a silly thing to ask for.

I was interested in this for Gravity Rush, but then I looked at that compatibility list and even with a DS4 patch, still no GR since the DS4 can only emulate the touch screen and not the backtouchpad. =(

Thats fine.

But the original question was, "do I need 2 VTVs to do remote play from PS4?". The answer is unequivocally no.

That you might want 2 or 3 is neither here nor there. You only NEED 1 to do remote play.

I think the main market for this device, if it ever takes off, won't be vita owners or ps4 owners. It will be casual gamers or kid gamers.

Remember, this isn't an accessory. This is a dedicated playstation home console for $100.
That doesn't come with a controller and features expensive, proprietary memory. I don't see it. It's an add-on.

Verge said they will allow this, connecting the Vita to the Vita TV.

Excellent.

Is anyone else thinking about just taking progress from the Vita and just taking the memory card and plugging it into the VitaTV? It should work seamlessly in theory correct?

Or maybe I will just put the 32GB card on this and the 64GB one on my Vita. Lots of potential here.

So does this mean that Giantbomb can Quicklook Vita games now?

Megaton if so.

Cool device, good price, I might get one down the road.

Isn't Vita only able to have 1 account at a time? Will Japanese Vita games play on a US Account? Online?

If so, Ill buy the hell out of J-Stars Victory and Gundam Seed.

Everyone had already answered the question to the letter of the law. My point was only to clarify the spirit with a specific scenario. A scenario that I think will not be insignificant.

The only games that won't be playable once DS4 support is added will be games where you need to touch specific things on the screen directly with your finger. Simple things like swipes to parry an attack could be done on the touchpad, while other things like defending against an ambush in Dynasty Warriors by touching all the incoming arrows cannot.

The back touchpad was just a bandaid for the lack of L2/R2/L3/R3 which won't be an issue with an actual controller in hand, and I don't see many problems coming from lack of back touchpad support since most can be mapped to those 4 buttons I mentioned.

The only major obstacle is games that had touchscreen elements shoehorned in to make the Vita version of games play differently which is now biting them in the ass now that they want to move away from that touchscreen.

Let me guess what it uses for additional storage....overpriced Vita memory cards.

That being said I might still buy one because I have extra DS 3's lying around and a room that could use a media extender. It probably won't be DLNA compliant though but maybe the service they described in the OP will work well enough.

Import all the physical Japanese titles you want. They work perfectly regardless of region or account.

It's online accounts (digital titles) that are limited to one per memory card. Just have a US account.

This is a defensive move. Basically Sony want to get a box out there before Apple and Google announce their inevitable setup top+ game play box.

If Sony really want to get this right, they need to get media playback working. Netflix, Hulu, iTunes and Play Music store streaming etc etc, plus most importantly local network movie payback thru NAS. If Sony can do that, and I mean good local network playback with proper mkv and subtitle support, then Apple and Google will have very little space to offer a better user experience.

Verge said they will allow this, connecting the Vita to the Vita TV.
where?

So SONY basically killed off any reason to bother buying a VITA

Hell ill prolly sell mine now and just use this.
no....

being $100 is a masterstroke

what controller comes with it?

Ouya am cry?

$150 ds3 w/ 8gb mem card bundle. Could just use your own ds3 though

I just realised, people who buy a PS4 will likely have a PSN+ account. All the free Vita/PSP/PS1 games they keep getting from Plus could tempt them to jump in on Vita for $100. The addition of streaming PS4 and Media features on a second TV is another bonus. This device is perfect for PS4 only owners or even PS4/Vita owners who just want to stream PS4 on another TV and make use of their Vita library on a TV.

On the flip side this device is also perfect for cheap people who can't afford PS4 and want a games system or media box. However it will compete with PS3 and 360 which are also on the same price range if you include a memory card and controller that you will need.

Finally for people who already own a Vita or plan to get a Vita handheld system. They can make use of this system if they want to simply play their current Vita games on the TV, or share Vita games with the family but not give away your Vita handheld. The addition of local play (1 person on Vita and 1 on VitaTV) can also be appealing to current Vita owners.

So there you have it the 3 types of customers Sony are aiming this device on.
