PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

I don't know if this has been asked already, but how will this affect sales charts? Will Vita TV be listed as it's own device, as a separate console, or will it's sales numbers be lumped together with regular Vita sales numbers?

A lot of Vita games are built around the touch screen, and slapping the Vita label on this thing is going to lead to confusion when the games don't work with a DS3. It really should have been called the PlayStation TV, without the cartridge slot, while still retaining the Vita internals. Sony could then rework Vita titles with the DS3 in mind, and release them in time. I suppose they could patch current software for this device as well, but it's going to be a mess initially.

A HDD-based model would have been nice as well. Even something as small as 250GB would be more than enough for most people.

Good idea overall though. I'll probably pick one up for the remote play stuff alone.

Eliminating the cartridge slot would kill retail Vita sales, and relegate Vita TV to just being sold at big-box tech superstores like Best Buy and Target, where the audience would be buying it primarily to stream TV. Video game shops would have little to gain from a TV set-top box with no physical games so sell.

Vita is the only portable games console which could have its games upscaled to an HDTV and still look passable in the IQ department.

Despite being a mobile architecture, the precision and algorithms it uses for properties and processes like 3D depth, color blending, texture filtering, anti-aliasing, etc. are all high quality, not cut at the corners.

I wonder if there are going to be improved upscaling or some thing being done to make the game look better, the trailer with them playing devil dice and tekken 2 looks nice. although maybe that's just low res footage of offscreen gameplay that make it look better in my mind.

And this is basically Sony's retrofit/last ditch effort for the Vita platform, right? Has to be. If this takes off, watch them throw this hardware into all their TVs. It'll be a damn massacre.

And this is basically Sony's retrofit/last ditch effort for the Vita platform, right? Has to be. If this takes off, watch them throw this hardware into all their TVs. It'll be a damn massacre.

This.

This is exactly what Sony needs to lift their sagging Television division.

So I haven't been able to follow this thread well at work (moving WAY too quickly), but I'm kind of excited about this device. If it sells well, which it should at $99, then developers will be enticed to make more Vita games for the overall platform (Vita + Vita TV)...games without touch controls!

I'll probably pick this up for the PS4 remote play capabilities when it launches in North America, but it's best "feature" to me is that it'll entice developers to make Vita games that don't shoehorn in touch/camera nonsense.

But this basically bridges the gap between those who want to play these portable games but on their TV. These are still natively designed Vita games. There's not magic happening. It's a Vita with a small and sleek chassis that supports TV out but has no screen. And it's 100 dollars.

Why make any PC indie then since it will come to Vita or vice versa. You see what I'm trying to say? Legend of Heroes TiTS can now be enjoyed on your PSP/PSV and have the PSV TV since this is all interconnected through your PSN account. I imagine there will be ways to transfer saves (hopefully wireless) so you can play on your Vita away and on the PSVTV at your house.

Not sure if i really understand this comment. Why would having more devices in the market to play the games you make be a 'discouraging' factor for developers? It's the exact opposite.

What? Tell me you realize what you just said...

I think there is some misunderstanding here I didn't know I was going to have to clarify my position; I'm" speaking in terms of if I were a developer. What is the point of developing Vita content when I can develop for the PS4 instead and distribute on the Playstation Network, it essentially accomplishes the same goal considering remote play.

My post was never about distribution and having content access to more devices, that's good.

•There will be a system software update to patch in DualShock 4 support.
•PS Vita can be used as a controller for some Wii U like functionality.

Nice! That takes care of any issues I was concerned about.

Wait...does that mean that all Vita games will work on the Vita TV with the Vita used as a controller? Definite purchase for me if so.

massacre for who?

Low budget gaming devices like the Ouya and GameStick.

Sony could effectively own an entire market. Hell, they could shove this shit into kids' 22" TV sets with a free month of PS+, and they would sell like fucking hotcakes.

Basically what Rich said. For the silly tinkerers like yours truly, I'll buy the Chromecasts and the UG802's/Android HTPCs cause I'm a doofus.

But for the most part, until the Chromecast, I just used the apps on my TV because it was simpler, even though they were total junk.

But you hurl this in and make it your SmartTV platform, that has (pipe dreams, naturally):

PS1/Vita/PSP Support
PS4 Remote Play Support
Whatever Streaming Apps (Netflix/Youtube/Hulu/Amazon/Crackle, Et Al)
Gaikai

Kaboom. You could make a remote if you really wanted to, or make a dumbed down version of the DS4. Hell, the Vizio remote has a trackpad on it now, if memory serves.

And they can fucking print money if they tie it into Plus. 'Here, have all this stuff! Just pay 5$ a month or so!'

#dead

This.

This is exactly what Sony needs to lift their sagging Television division.

It's the perfect way to lift their TV division as well as Vita. It just depends on whether it'll work. Who knows?

Something important too: It's a locked ecosystem/internals and such. As such, once you get a Sony TV, the experience will always be the same. That's a big deal for a SmartTV platform.

Because VitaTV will cost $100 and the PS4 will cost $400.

At its price it opens up a whole new segment of the market.

That would have doubled its size and cost.
Doubled the size, yes. The cost of a 250GB HDD would have added like $30 to the price though, and given people a ton of space to fill with PSN content. Sony could also release a basic model at $100 with an empty HDD bay for those looking to install their own HDD or Vita memory card, or those just looking for a Netflix/PS4 streaming box. We're just talking about a little plastic and SATA interface here.

It's a good choice in the long run, I just see a lot of parents this Christmas (or whenever this is coming out) buying incompatible Vita software for the thing. There are a ton of games that use the touch screen quite extensively and they'll need to be patched in order to work with a controller.

So I'm planning on preordering this as soon as I can...I was thinking play-asia? Is that the best place to preorder something like this, or is there anyplace else you guys would recommend?

If I did go to play-asia, does anyone know when they charge your card? like do they charge it at the time of ordering at all, or do they wait until processing?

I would go through Nippon-Yasan. Play-Asia charges a lot more for the same product. Their preorder system is boss too. All you need to do is preorder it as soon as it is listed. They will place your preorder down and then you are given time to pay for it up to the point of release. If you do not pay by the specific date (which is usually a few days prior to the release date), your preorder is cancelled.

The price difference between the two is like night and day. For example, I am buying the Monster Hunter 4 3DSLL Limited Edition system through Nippon-Yasan for $323. Play-Asia has the same product for $439. Nuff said...

Next step sony, put this hw inside all of your tvs, turn every sony tv into a playstation device

Like I said before, if I was a buying a budget TV for my kids bedroom, and I find out I could buy a 22" set for £200 or so with a Vita TV built in along with a 90 day free trial for ps+ then....

That's Christmas fucking sorted right out. Hell, when I get a PS4, it can even be streamed to their TV upstairs using the built in hardware!

it's too good an idea to not happen.

Because VitaTV will cost $100 and the PS4 will cost $400.

At its price it opens up a whole new segment of the market.

Now that remains to be seen, just because its cheap doesn't inherently mean that it will translate to success, that depends on public perception, advertising and product positioning. Regardless, I may be wrong but I've been wrong before and I don't mind being wrong again.

What people are also forgetting is this will also let you party chat and Skype so even if you don't get the ps4 at released this will allow the cross game chat you've always wanted. With your friends

PS Vita doesn't become irrelevant because there are still some who want gaming on the go. This just expands the Vita market to the cheap home-console market. More Vita devices = More Vita games.

Win-win for everyone who have a Vita device whether it be handheld or Vita TV. Genius really from Sony to save the Vita brand. Cheap-console market is huge, and Sony seems to be on the right track to take advantage. Ouya tried, but failed.

So Sony would still sell Vitas even if it was still selling as bad as it is doing now if Vita TV sells 10-20x more during the same time frame worldwide?

As a former owner of the OG vita I'm wondering if I should buy the OG again because of the OLED. I think it's a major improvement over LCD.

Doubled the size, yes. The cost of a 250GB HDD would have added like $30 to the price though, and given people a ton of space to fill with PSN content. I agree that it might be confusing, but I don't think it will be parents who'll be buying this for their children. For $30 more, they will get their tots a 2DS and get them out of the living room.

If anything, it will be parents buying it for themselves, which can still lead to confusion.

Maybe certain popular games that use the touchscreen will be patched, who knows.

As cool as this is, it kind of defeats the object of a Vita, freeing up the handheld market for 3DS, then if people want the decent vita games they can buy this, and use it in conjunction with a ps4, like its a PS4 vita addon akin to the gameboy player of the gamecube

still i already own a Vita and there are some psp games i'd like to see on TV, like Crisis Core man i'd love to see that on.......oh yeah UMD release only...nevermind

Now that remains to be seen, just because its cheap doesn't inherently mean that it will translate to success, that depends on public perception, advertising and product positioning. Regardless, I may be wrong but I've been wrong before and I don't mind being wrong again.

That's what I'm hesistant with. I will take a wait and see approach with this even tho I do like the idea.

I've asked this before but I'll give it another go. Does anybody have a list of compatible games in English?

Do we know the estimate for the BOM for this? Can't be that expensive. We have:

CPU - ARM® Cortex™-A9 core (4core)
GPU - IMG SGX543MP4+
2 USB Connectors, HDMI connector, LAN, MC, Vita Card connectors
Wifi, Bluetooth, 1GB internal
Casing

The PSV BOM was $159.10 in January 2012.

This vitatv BOM gotta be around $50 bucks and with shipping, distribution, etc costs, Sony gotta be netting ~30% on each unit sold, right?

Although the announcement of this makes me wonder if a VITAPhone (Xperia Play 2) is still on the cards.

A vita phone - or a tablet - would need a significantly smoother OS and ebook/app/MP3 store all integrated with the game/video store. Sony does not have those in place. They can get away half assing it on a dedicated game machine and a "tv" machine, but not on a phone/tablet.

I just see a lot of parents this Christmas (or whenever this is coming out) buying incompatible Vita software for the thing. There are a ton of games that use the touch screen quite extensively and they'll need to be patched in order to work with a controller.
Absolutely. When Sony advertise this they need to make it very clear that only certain Vita games will work. I'd also suggest it would be a good idea for Sony to slap compatible with Vita TV or not compatible with Vita TV on every single Vita game box they ship once this comes out. And if possible get retailers to stick a little sticker on every existing Vita game box they have in stock saying which ones are compatible. The confusion around this will be immense as will the negative feedback if Sony don't make it very clear to the masses which Vita games will work and which won't.

extremely positive. People called it the 3DS killer, and for a moment I was convinced they had a chance

I see... wonder if this is going to be the same thing happening again then. I hope not. Im still getting it but the better it doe sthe more games it gets.

There's a $50 difference between the 10GB PS3 and the 250GB PS3.

Oh and it's white to match my Vita. How thoughtful. I'm not sure why I need one but I want one.

As a former owner of the OG vita I'm wondering if I should buy the OG again because of the OLED. I think it's a major improvement over LCD.

Sony did say their Vita LCD uses the latest tech and should retain a good and vibrant color palate.

Given the reduction in components, I would be surprised if Vita 2000 doesn't launch in the West for $150-170.

So, wait, let me try to get this straight:

You buy a portable handheld to use it at home as a controller for a handheld settop box, which you also buy, with which you can play your handheld games blown up to 3-4x the resolution, looking like shit.

Did I get it right? Sounds like an awesome product
