PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

So this is pratically the WiiU idea reversed?

Sony are Genius.

Wow never thought about it like that

Except with Remote Play it includes the off tv play function the gamepad has

Man Vita + PS4 seems like the way to go

Think I might get Vita + Vita TV + PS4 though as that sounds crazy

unified account and you still can't play all your downloaded games on the PS4 :(

Not having 100% BC is a problem, but I am sure compatible games can be played on all compatible devices, as it should be.

For example, It would be fine if you could not emulate N64 games on 3DS, but we should be able to play SNES games on both the WiiU and 3DS with the same purchase. If the next handheld can emulate n64 games, then we can play our n64 purchases there.

I like the idea of it, but the lack of storage, or an SD card is a problem for me. I don't want to have a hard drive under my television. Additionally it's coming out now that some games will not work, like Tearaway. That's a big no deal for me, because it becomes a minefield which games are supported.

I suppose Sony could hide all Vita-touch games from the store, which for digital only consumers is great but it just complicates the retail shopping experience for consumers. Or worse undermines the very nature of a Vita game, suddenly developers stop supporting touch in meaningful ways or offer alternative controls for Vita TV.

Shrug, cool idea but I think it needs another revision before it's ready for prime time. Additionally SCEE will probably price it at £100 or 200 EUR

Ah, I see. For me I'm the only one that would be interested in gaming so the wife and fam can utilize the streaming services and I can game. Perfect.

It is perfect for you. If I lived alone, I would certainly go that route.

This really gives the Vita an entirely new lease on life. I know we are all estimating it is $100, but what if is less? You know how pricing differs in each region.

Can one PSN account use remote play on the Vita or Vita TV while another uses the PS4? For instance, say I want to play something on my Vita through remote play while someone else in my house wants to use the console for another game.

We know from previous Cerny interviews that in remote play for Vita rendering is done on the PS4 so I'm not sure I understand the 720p limitation on streaming PS4 games either.

Bandwidth. 1080p streaming at a high bit-rate takes an enormous amount of bandwidth that degenerates the further away from the console you get.

So, wait, let me try to get this straight:

You buy a portable handheld to use it at home as a controller for a handheld settop box, which you also buy, with which you can play your handheld games blown up to 3-4x the resolution, looking like shit.

Did I get it right? Sounds like an awesome product

Hmm... my PSP games looked "acceptable" on the TV. I can only imagine these games would look substantially better than that. However I still play some PSX games so I'm probably not exactly a graphics whore.

if Sony can minimize PSVita into that tiny device, I would so love if they somehow add PS2 hardware and make it have PS2 bc. oh well, maybe for PSVitaTV 2

You don't need to buy a normal Vita to use Vita TV, just a Dualshock 3 or 4 controller.

Don't think so. The remote play uses the PS4 hardware to stream it. If the hardware is in use it likely won't work.... IE. How the PS3 works. Once Gaikai comes out you will be able to stream PS3/ (PS4?) games to the vita and it won't even need the console.

Well, my first thought seeing this was like wtf are they trying to achieve with this device?

I mean ok, they are trying to resurrect the Vita, but with a stationary device? Really? What audience are they even aiming at?

The stationary console market is almost dead in Japan. Most people there spent hours of travelling in a train every day. So they try to kill time on the way and play mobile games. After a 9- hour work day and spending hours on the way, most people want to chill with their family or just watch TV, but certainly not playing the video games they already played on the way to work, again.

So yeah, it's for the western market then you will say, but who besides a real small minority would want to play mobile games on the big TV?

The western market is split into casuals who just want short fun on the way while swanking arround with their newest mobile device and the core crowd which is way too heavy into blockbuster shooter and sport games with fancy graphics.

I think this device is a waste of resources.

This is brilliant. I'm on this as soon as it's released in North America. Been wanting to get a Vita but never could justify the price, and I'd play it at home 99% of the time anyway. This targets me perfectly.

Well, my first thought seeing this was like wtf are they trying to achieve with this device?

You're thinking about it narrowly. The fact that this costs $100 and has such a large featureset is huge. If Sony markets this effectively it will sell.

Bought a PS4? With this device you can play that PS4 on any TV in your house without having to move the actual device. Plus, you'll be able to play all those nice Vita games you've gotten for free as a result of the PS+ membership you already have.

Thinking of getting an Apple TV/Roku/etc.? Like games? This is your best choice.

Gaming on a budget, in the market for a $100 console? Want to play Vita games but don't want to pay so much? This is what you'll get. There are multiple markets for this device, and the extra functionality and inter connectivity with other Sony products gives it an extra edge over the competition in each of these different markets. It could work really well for Sony.

I went from not being interested in buying a Vita to instantly wanting this device.

Not a waste of resources for me.

I'm gonna play Ao no Kiseki Evolution on this when it comes out. Oh god, gonna be so good.

The more I think about it, the more brilliant the device is. It leverages several key Sony platform technologies and combines them into a tiny, affordable device for streaming games, TV, and other media. It directly and indirectly matches Wii U, Amazon, Ouya, Shield, Roku, Apple TV and more. The only thing is, I don't know if Sony can market this correctly.

Being able to play Vita games directly on my TV is an interesting concept as is the remote play for PS4.

The more I think about it, the more I want it...I just wonder how big this could really be, but Sony has done this kind of thing before and their cleverness doesn't always pay off for them.

So now Sony is releasing two consoles I want this year, while I still don't care about the Xbone. Nice.

$100 to be able to use my PS4 on another TV, plus play PSP, PSOne, and Vita games on my television? Sold. My only concern with this is how much of a pain it will be to swap my memory card from my Vita to the Vita TV, hopefully the PSN accounts don't freak out.

This is mine on day 1.

so glad I hit "buy" on all those ps+ vita games...

is there gonna be a compatibility list somewhere for the games?

Can you use the PS Vita as a controller/second screen for the Vita TV?

If so, the Wii U got trumped.

The interesting part is no one really knew they wanted this until Sony revealed it to us.

Not true. I always want Super Gameboy/Gameboy Player type solutions for portables since I only play them at home anyway. It's nice to actually get one again.

Because that functionality would cost $100 more, and no one wants to be REQUIRED to pay $100 more. Some people would rather buy the second box. It's not just vita functionality here. This also plays Playstation 1 and PSP games, as well as Netflix and the like. You can also install it in another room and stream your PS4 so someone else can use the TV that the PS4 is in.

I think he means a software emulator. There's really no reason why Sony's more expensive consoles shouldn't be capable of playing psp/vita games.

This kills the Vita.

No, it would just increase Vita's user base. Just like this device does.

Currently, the Remote Play function on the PS3 displays its screen on the Vita while the TV screen indicates that Remote Play is in use.

I'd imagine it would be very similar on the PS4. If I understood your question correctly, what you're asking for requires the PS4 to be loading two different games at the same time (i.e., one person playing Knack on the PS4, while another tries to play Killzone on their Vita/TV via Remote Play from the same PS4). I don't think the system will be capable of pulling something like that off.

Have they stated what teh output resolution on this thing is?

Vita games at 960x544 are going to look crappy on an HDTV - that's a given. It better support at least 720p for video output though.

What some on here need to consider is that this is a brilliant strategy no matter how you look at it as it couldn't possibly have taken much resources comparatively to other endeavors

I mean the Vita TV is literally the vita motherboard with the connections slightly tweaked, and probably some other small tweaks

I can't imagine it required much R&D besides some video scaling engine which is nothing at the end of the day

If the vita tv bombs completely and it might, this won't cost Sony that much at all

Much less than if the vita as a whole was to bomb

And Sony gets to push everything at once, vita, PS4, Gaikai, maybe it's IPTV offering, streaming services, pushes into apple/google territory

This is brilliant even if it fall flat on its face

People who were only going to get a PS4 and not a Vita before this announcement can maybe find just a little more value to a PS Plus subscription now. Because now it's not just free games and discounts for PS4 titles, but also PSP. Vita, and classic titles. Hopefully it might make the sting of paying for online play a little less...um...sting-y.

YES stream PS4 from another room? I can now leave my PS4 on my tv and connect this to my pc monitor. This is hot damn glorious.

Kaz's vision of synergy is coming into fruition. Sony is making a bold move with this. It really will change the console structure going forward if this is successful. Gaikai and dummy boxes...I wonder

VitaTV trailer starts with the guy playing Soul Sacrifice on his HDTV. :)

They need to be supported, so far we have only "dualshock 3" powered list of japanese focused games.

I think this could be just stuff we tried for ourselves, Sony made similar list of PSP games that can be played on Vita at launch and there's a lot more games that are actually supported than what Sony listed.
